Medicine Hat News

Someone with the South East Athletic Club needs to hand out red lightbulbs for Christmas.

The SEAC Tigers’ two teams combined to light the lamp a ridiculous 26 times in three games this past weekend, each side pouring in their biggest offensive output of the season right before a two-week break from league action.

The bantam AAA Tigers only had one game, Saturday against Grande Prairie on home ice, and did not hold back. They beat the Storm 11-1.

Dawson Seitz had a hat trick plus an assist, so did Tyler Broesky, while Josh Drefs had two goals and two helpers. Matthew MacPherson, Shane Smith and Ethan Kinch had the other goals and Dayden Collier totaled three assists.

Grande Prairie was outshot 60-28 but spoiled Kaiden Morin’s shutout bid with 58 seconds to go.

At 11-5-4, SEAC is second in its division behind Red Deer.

Midget 15’s

As for the midget 15-year-old Tigers, they had a win and a tie in their last games before the holidays, but the win was a big one.

In Calgary, South East beat the Bruins 10-5 Sunday. On the power play for most of the afternoon, the Tigers went 6-for-14 with the man advantage, scoring four of those in the third period alone.

It was only 4-3 through 40 minutes but the constant stream of players to the sin bin made for a bizarre finish. Tyler Broesky — yes, the same Tyler Broesky who had a hat trick for the bantam AAA’s Saturday in Medicine Hat — also scored three in this game. Callen Prosofsky also netted three. Braden Houle, Ethan Machan, Vaughn Strutt and Tanner Gold notched singles.

Brendan Olson made 27 saves for the win, though his side only needed 36 shots to deposit 10 in the Bruins net.

The victory followed a 5-5 tie against Calgary Royals Blue. Up 2-0 after one period, the Royals battled back with two of their own in the second and scored three quick goals to open the third. But SEAC roared back, with Strutt’s second of the day with 2:11 remaining tying it. Machan, Jarred Schrock and Evan Gebhart also tallied and Aidan Low made 38 saves for the visitors, who are 10-4-5, fourth in their division.

Bantam AA

Medicine Hat’s bantam AA Hounds lost twice on the road to the Wheatland Warriors.

In Hussar Saturday the Warriors earned a 3-0 shutout. In Strathmore Sunday the score was 2-1.

Zach Ferguson made 28 saves Saturday in the loss, while Parker Forrest blanked the Hounds with 20 saves.

Hayden King scored the first goal Sunday but Wheatland took control from there, outshooting Medicine Hat 33-12. Rylan Hodgson made 30 saves for the visitors.

The Hounds host Lethbridge Saturday (1 p.m.) and Taber Sunday (1:15 p.m.) at the Moose Rec Centre.

Peewee AA

In Cranbrook for their lone game of the weekend Saturday, the peewee AA Hounds finished strong in an 8-0 shutout win.

Josiah Jackson, Deegan Kinniburgh and Josh Evaschesen each had two goals while Noah Derouin and Samuel Hynes marked the others.

Beck Boiteau earned an 18-save shutout.

Peewee girls

It took a great defensive performance to hand Medicine Hat’s peewee girls Tier 1 team their first loss of the regular season.

In a matchup of unbeatens Sunday in Red Deer, the hosts emerged with a 2-1 win despite being outshot 40-25.

Rayna Lennie starred in the Red Deer goal while her teammates built a 2-0 lead. Brianna Finke got one for Medicine Hat with 8:11 to go but the Hounds couldn’t find the equalizer and dropped to 8-1. Red Deer, 6-0-2, trails by two points in the standings but has a game in hand.

The Hat girls played twice on Saturday leading in to the big showdown, whereas Red Deer had the day off. Medicine Hat beat Okotoks 8-1 in the morning, then drove to Airdrie and beat that team 6-2 in the evening. Barely 14 hours later they were on the ice in Red Deer.

Riley Gramlich had two goals in each of Saturday’s games. Katie Kuipers and Leila Schultz added two each against Okotoks, then Treah Hall and Hannah Orr got one apiece. Against Airdrie, Finke and Keira Grant also had two-goal outings. Taya Christie was in net for both games, stopping 52 pucks.
