After finishing their home tournament with plenty of positives, the South East Athletic Club Tigers got right back to work in their bantam AAA league season with a pair of hard-fought victories.
In Calgary Saturday to play the Royals, South East came from behind to win 5-4. Down 3-0 after 20 minutes, goalie Bodee Weiss was called upon in relief and stopped 19 of the 20 shots he faced while his teammates got things going at the other end of the ice.
Dayden Collier started the comeback in the second, assisted on Tyler Broesky’s goal a few minutes later, then potted another in the last minute of the frame after Dawson Seitz’s shorthanded marker to make it 4-4.
Matthew MacPherson banged in a rebound from a Josh Drefs shot in the third period for the game-winner. Broesky finished with a goal and two assists as the Tigers outshot the Royals 37-31.
Weiss was again a big part of the story in Brooks Sunday. Playing a home game not in Medicine Hat for a change, the Tigers beat Okotoks 5-3 despite being outshot 44-29.
This time, SEAC owned the first period. Austin Derzaph, Collier and Shane Smith made it 3-0. Tyler Miller made it 4-0 in the second, then Collier potted another before the last intermission and the Tigers hung on in the third despite two replies from Okotoks.
SEAC is 9-4-2, two points back of Red Deer for top spot in their division but with a game in hand. They head to Lloydminster and Leduc this weekend to play arguably two of the toughest teams in the province.
Midget 15’s
The SEAC midget 15-year-old Tigers were in the Edmonton area on the weekend, getting three out of four possible points to extend their unbeaten string to five games.
They beat the Maple Leaf Athletic Club 7-1 Saturday, getting a goal and three assists from Hayden Prosofsky, two goals and a helper from Ethan Machan and a goal and assist each from Callen Prosofsky and Carsyn Good. Tanner Gold had the other goal and Brendan Olson made 25 saves as the Tigers outshot MLAC 52-26.
At the Fort Saskatchewan Rangers Sunday, a 2-2 tie saw Hayden Prosofsky and Mason Mowat score, then Aidan Low make nine of his 23 saves in a scoreless third period. The Tigers had 37 shots on net.
SEAC hosts the Calgary Canucks Saturday in Brooks.
Midget AA
The second game of the weekend is supposed to be the tough one, but not for Medicine Hat’s midget AA Hounds.
The Hounds tied the Calgary Stamps 2-2 Saturday, then destroyed the Foothills Bisons 13-1 at the Kinplex Sunday.
In both cases Medicine Hat outshot their opponents. It was 35-22 Saturday as Ryley Manz and Connor Miller scored. No surprise the margin was wider Sunday, 65-12.
Foothills ruined goalie Nate Hoffman’s shutout bid with 2:40 to go. All but Hoffman had a point offensively, and only Zackery Dovichak (two goals, one assist) had more than one goal. The top two point-getters were Brandon Hauck and Carson Dingwall with five points each.
Peewee AA
The Hounds peewee AA team ran its unbeaten streak to 12 games with a 7-4 win in Blackier Saturday over Foothills’ Bisons.
Tied 3-3 after 20 minutes, the Hounds kept coming with three more in the second. Shots wound up 32-18 in Medicine Hat’s favour. Ryan Miller had two goals and three assists, while Noah Derouin and Jesse Klimosko each had a goal and two assists.
The Hounds host Foothills Sunday at the Moose Recreation Centre at 1:15 p.m.
Peewee girls
The peewee Wildcats girls team played some close games in Calgary this past weekend at one of the biggest female tournaments around.
At WickFest, the Wildcats got to meet tournament namesake Hayley Wickenheiser as well as many other Olympic athletes and even Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. They went 1-3 on the ice, unable to reach the Sunday final.
A 4-3 loss to Regina’s Rebels saw Riley Gramlich score twice and Keira Grant the other. A 4-3 loss to a Calgary team saw Katie Kuipers, Keyana Bert and Leila Schultz score.
The lone win came Saturday, 4-0 over Swift Current. Bert, Ryan Harvey-Zenk, Taya Christie and Brooke Johnson scored and Maddy Ferguson got the shutout in goal. But a 3-1 loss to Winnipeg East’s Saints ended their playoff hopes, despite Harvey-Zenk’s goal.
