Mavs on road to start ’19 season

Medicine Hat News

The Medicine Hat Mavericks will get their longest road trip out of the way early as they start the 2019 season.

The defending champions in the newly-renamed Western Canadian Baseball League got their schedule finalized Monday and will open at home Thursday, May 30 against the Brooks Bombers. But after that they play eight of their next nine games on the road, including an annual trip to Fort McMurray for a four-game set.

The 56-game schedule is up eight from previous years, and comes at the expense of a playoff format that gives teams with small, ace-heavy pitching staffs a huge advantage. Instead of best-of-five series, the three-round post-season will be best-of-three affairs. It’ll all be over in 10 days barring any rainouts.

The Mavs get to host Fort McMurray for three games in the final week of the regular season, in which they play five of their last six at Athletic Park.

Also on the schedule is the new all-star game, the first the league has had in a decade, set for Sunday, July 7 in Edmonton.

Edmonton also gets to play before any other team in 2019, hosting Lethbridge Saturday, May 25 and Sunday, May 26.

Medicine Hat hasn’t released any dates for special events yet but one is pretty much for sure, as they host Yorkton on Canada Day, which is a Monday in 2019.

The schedule was sent in a press release by the WCBL, but has not been posted on the league website or by the Mavericks yet.
