Ringette Report: Ringette teams take their bumps

Medicine Hat News

It was a tough weekend as a pair of Medicine Hat ringette teams opened their league seasons on the short side of the scoreboard.

The under-12 Surge saw eight different players score in their Sunday doubleheader against the Strathmore Ice Outlaws, but that wasn’t enough. Strathmore won the first game 12-5 and the second 12-4.

Jaida Waldagger, Grace Ammann, Kasey Martin, Ryleigh Jackiw and Mackenzie Tindall scored in the opener. Jackiw, Jordy Provost, Hailey Grad and Bella Heinrichs found the back of the net in the second.

Kyree Stern-Rebmann was in goal for both losses, making plenty of saves as the Outlaws simply had too many chances.

It’s early in the season and the Surge will stay at home for another weekend. On Saturday they’ll face Airdrie at 11:30 a.m. and 4 p.m. at the Kinplex.

Under-14

Up against a pair of Calgary teams, Medicine Hat’s Fusion under-14 B squad saw improvements from one game to the next but not any wins to show for it.

Facing a team with the same name as them, Medicine Hat dropped a 16-0 decision Sunday in Calgary. The host side improved to 2-0-1, already in their second week of play while the Gas City side got its first taste of the league.

Things went a bit better later in the day against the Calgary Eclipse, but the 12-4 score went in the Eclipse’s favour.

Eva Chartrand had two goals for Medicine Hat, while Jordan Weisgerber had a goal and three assists. Avery Weisgerber had the team’s first goal.

In net, rookie Abrielle Guest made some outstanding saves.

Fusion return to Calgary in two weeks’ time for their next games.

Under-16

One local team to report their scores did go unbeaten. The under-16 Mud Hens had a couple exhibition tilts in Calgary against under-14 squads, and emerged victorious.

On Sunday, they beat the AA White side 6-0 and the AA Red team 5-4.

Against Calgary White, Sydney Carlson earned a shutout while Jaida Wallis, Marley Rose, Amanda Robinson, Dimitria Karamanos, Allison Mason, and Andie Suhai scored.

Serena Grona scored the game-winning goal with five seconds to go against Calgary Red. Mason, Ashlyn Seale, Kylie Kallenberger and Sydney Anderson had the others.

The Mud Hens host Cochrane Sunday, 11:45 a.m. at the Kinplex and 4 p.m. at the Moose Rec Centre to begin their league schedule.
