Champions were crowned Friday after a week of golf at Desert Blume Golf Club during the 2018 Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association Golf Nationals.

Laurent Desmarchais won the men’s side of the tournament, Emily Romancew won the women’s side and the Red Deer women’s team became the first Albertan school to win a CCAA tournament.

The Medicine Hat Rattlers women finished second behind the Red Deer Queens while the Rattlers men finished 10th on the men’s side — Boomerang d’André-Laurendeau took the gold.

“It’s just been a great day and a great tournament,” said Romancew, who shot a 73 on the final day to secure the gold medal. “I don’t think it was one or two things I did out there to win — it was just staying calm and knowing that I had to play four solid rounds.

“It was a lot of fun and I’m going to remember this for a long time.”

Romancew was the only golfer on the women’s side to shoot a sub-300 score with a 298. Rattler Becky Martin shot a four over 76 on the final day to finish fourth — with a total of 307 on the tournament. She says the tournament was great to be a part of.

“It’s unbelievable, really,” said Martin. “You don’t realize how many people know and watch how well I’m doing — the amount of people who came out to watch that I would have never expected has been crazy.

“The community support has been unreal.”

The Rattlers women shot plus-11 as a team Friday and plus-65 on the tournament, while the men shot a plus-16 Friday and a plus-113 for the tournament. Coach Trevor Moore says it was a week to remember.

“I couldn’t be more proud of them — all of them,” he said of both Rattlers teams. “It’s been an unbelievable experience for us and it’s touched our lives for sure.

“Being able to create these memories as a team and share them with the people around us is very special and we’re very thankful for the support this week.”

As for the Rattlers men, Matthaus Taylor finished tied for ninth or the men’s side with a Friday score of plus-1 and a total 289 for the week. Derek Whitson finished 46th shooting 317. Keaton Sulz and Brady Resch tied for 54th — both Rattlers shot 334. Kent Lesko finished 57th shooting 339.

After Martin, Rattler Sierra Zukowski finished 11th with a plus-50 338. Nicole Schultz took 13th with a 341 on the week.
