While most of us were filling up on stuffing, two Medicine Hat ringette teams were in St. Albert for the 20th annual Turkey Ring tournament.
And wouldn’t you know it, one of them gobbled up all comers en route to claiming their division’s title.
The under-16 A Mud Hens went 4-0 in St. Albert, closing with a 4-2 win over the Calgary Bow View Blazers Sunday afternoon.
“It’s a great start to the season,” said head coach Marty Robinson in a press release. “The girls worked hard through all four games. This tournament kick starts our team and helps us get ready for the season.”
Delaney Mastel, Sheridyn Herman, Amanda Robinson and Allison Mason scored in the gold medal game, while Sydney Carlson was impressive between the pipes.
They advanced to the title match with a perfect round robin record. A 9-3 win over Calgary NW Rumble, then a 7-0 shutout of Edmonton Rush and a 4-2 win over Calgary NW Nova cemented the right to play for gold.
Under-14
Meanwhile, the under-14 A Charge played hard Saturday and Sunday but didn’t stick around for a rare Monday final.
Charge fell 9-5 to Calgary Bow View GnR Saturday, then beat the Spruce Grove Ignite 8-2 Sunday morning. But a narrow 3-2 loss to St. Albert Edge left them fourth in the six-team round robin. GnR won the final 7-2 over Airdrie.
Kayla Robinson, Ryan Sweet, Sophie Kerr, Jena Harty, Grace Carrier, Hannah Thompson and Kylee Waldegger all scored for Charge, which split goaltending duties between Leah Mason and Charlie Christie.
Home games
League play begins this weekend for Medicine Hat teams with home games for under-12 and under-19 teams. The under-12’s host Cochrane at 11:30 a.m. (Moose) and 4 p.m. (Kinplex 2) Saturday. The under-19’s also host Cochrane, at 11:45 a.m. (Kinplex 2) and 4 p.m. (Moose) on Sunday.
