Medicine Hat News

The South East Athletic Club’s bantam AAA team got a win on the ice and another off of it on their first weekend of home games.

The Tigers split their weekend, losing 4-3 to the Calgary Northstars Saturday before beating the Parkland Athletic Club Saints from Spruce Grove 6-0 Sunday at Hockey Hounds Arena.

They also raised money for the local women’s shelter at the Saturday game, collecting donations for a good cause.

No amount raised was reported, but the fans who came Saturday out saw a close game decided by a goal early in the third period.

Roman Cherniak had two goals to pace the home side, which also got a goal and an assist from Tyler Broesky.

Two shorthanded goals from the Northstars were the difference, including Samuel Lozinski’s 50 seconds into the final period which held up as the winner. Lozinski potted two goals even though his team was outshot 41-28.

On Sunday, six different Tigers found the back of the net as they outshot the Saints 58-29. Kaiden Morin got the shutout for SEAC, which had a three-point effort from Dayden Colier and two-point games from Dawson Seitz and captain Vann Yuhas.

SEAC hosts Lethbridge this Saturday, 2:15 p.m. at Hockey Hounds.

Midget 15’s

The South East midget 15-year-old team got off to a good start Saturday at home with a 4-2 win over the Calgary Blackhawks.

After Calgary tied it up mid-way through the third period, the Tigers responded with goals from Ethan Machan and Jarred Schrock a minute apart. They outshot the visitors 40-27, with netminder Brendan Olsen making 25 saves for the victory.

Carsyn Good and Gerret Harty scored about a minute apart in the second period for the Tigers, also coming just after the Blackhawks put their first past Olsen.

Next up for SEAC is a home game Friday, 7:15 p.m. against Lethbridge.

Midget AA

The midget AA Hounds earned a season-opening 3-1 win at Taber Friday.

Brady Dovichak and Connor Miller had second-period goals and Caleb Irvine added an empty-netter late for Medicine Hat.

Dawsen Savage only saw 17 shots but stopped 16 of them for the win, as his team outshot Taber 32-17.

Bantam AA

Four straight road games to start the season didn’t faze the bantam AA Hounds, who won twice this past weekend.

At Airdrie Saturday, the Hounds won 5-3. Caleb Garrecht and Gavin Smith each scored twice, once each on the power play, while Zach Hauck added a late insurance marker. Zach Ferguson made 27 saves in net.

Sunday in Taber Medicine Hat won 4-1. Brady Mahar, Dawson Stewart and Luke Renschler each had a goal and an assist, Rylan Hodson made 14 stops as his side outshot Taber 34-15.

They finally get a home game this Saturday, 3:45 p.m. against Bow Valley at the Moose Recreation Centre.

Peewee AA

They didn’t lose a game until the playoffs last season, but on Sunday in Sylvan Lake the peewee AA Hounds lost a close 2-1 decision to the West Central Tigers.

After beating Red Deer 11-2 Saturday, the Hounds were outshot 35-23. Both teams had four power plays but West Central capitalized on one of theirs, while Medicine Hat went 0-for-4.

Madden Kelly had the lone goal.

The Saturday game featured a hat trick from Jesse Klimosko and two-goal games from Ryan Miller and Josh Evaschesen. Miller added three assists, Klimosko one and Deegan Kinniburgh had four helpers in the blowout.

Their home opener is this Saturday, 1 p.m. against Airdrie White at the Moose.
