Pickleballers converge for Showdown in the Hat

Medicine Hat News

Hordes of pickleballers kept the courts in Strathcona busy this past weekend, with the annual Showdown in the Hat involving dozens of teams from across the province.

While doubles events were split into age groups, the singles competitions held Friday and Sunday were all-ages. Kim Layton won the women’s over Becks Dudley, while in the men’s singles it was Neil Maser outduelling Scott Richter for gold.

Dudley was one of the few to win more than one gold over the busy weekend, teaming with Valerie Delisle to take the women’s under-50 doubles title over Lauren Vien and Theresa McMullan.

Another double-gold winner was Gordon Masson, who paired with Guy Riddell to win the men’s 70-plus division, then Linda Bowles for the mixed victory over Vicki Smyth and Ken Hurshowy.

Michael Wagner pulled off the double-gold, too, winning one with Mel Saranchuk in the men’s 60-plus division (over Keith Edwards and Brian Hoffner in the final), and the other with Ira Fazio in the mixed final over Yolanda Jordheim and Bill Loran.
