Mavericks suffer walk-off defeat

Medicine Hat News

The Medicine Hat Mavericks had a three-game winning streak snapped at the hands of the Edmonton Prospects on Wednesday at ReMax Field.

Tony Olson scored on an error in the 10th to break open a tie game and snuff out Medicine Hat’s lengthy comeback attempt with a 7-6 walk-off.

Nick Spillman put Edmonton on the board with a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the first, then the Prospects made Medicine Hat pay for an error with two more runs in the third before the Mavs responded.

Hatter Nolan Rattai’s fourth-inning RBI double was immediately answered with a solo shot from Anthony Cusati in the home half of the frame, but Rattai repeated the feat in the fifth after another RBI double from Colton Wright to cut Edmonton’s lead down to one.

The back and forth trend continued, with Edmonton’s Beaux Guilbeau re-establishing a two-run cushion in the fifth, Jordan Dray erasing it in the top of the sixth and Olson answering right back in by crossing on an error in the bottom half.

Things finally shifted in Medicine Hat’s favour in the eighth, when Jaxson Hooge slapped an RBIdouble into the gap then Wright cashed him to draw even, but Olson stole the game away in the 10th.

Mavericks reliever Tyler Shumpert took the loss after allowing the winning run on one hit. Josh Sieglitz took the win for Edmonton after two clean frames.

Hat starter Jaymon Cervantes settled for no decision after allowing five runs — one earned — on five hits through 4 and 2/3 innings.

The Mavs (30-7) and Prospects (19-18) go at it again tonight at 7:05 p.m.
