Hat swimmers do well at Southern Alberta championships in home pool

For the second straight weekend, the Alberta Marlin Aquatic Club hauled in 40 medals at a swim meet.

But this was no ordinary meet.

With Medicine Hat’s Family Leisure Centre the host facility for the Southern Alberta championships, both Marlin and Medicine Hat Waves athletes showed what they can do against a field of 450.

AMAC’s Delrae Vetter had the biggest medal haul of anyone, a whopping seven medals including wins in 200 metre individual medley, plus 200 and 400 metre freestyle. The 13-year-old added three silver and a bronze, getting hardware for every swim she entered. She now has five qualifying times for nationals.

The Waves’ Jaiden Riddell, 14, had a half-dozen medals, including wins in 50 metre freestyle and 50 breaststroke plus four second-place finishes. Another 14-year-old, Parker Maxwell of the Marlins, also had six medals with his gold coming in 100 and 200 butterfly (plus two silver and two bronze).

Ashton Scholly racked up five medals (gold in 50 and 100 free, 50 and 200 back), while fellow Marlin Kristin Hollingworth had four silver and Aspen Fetch won her 50, 100 and 200 breast. Scholly had six gold a weekend earlier at an outdoor meet in Red Deer, while Fetch had three gold and a bronze.

Other Waves to medal were Karsten Senft (three bronze), Jaivyn Barabe (one silver, one bronze), Trintiy Shilka and Grace Jacobs (one bronze each).

Other Marlins to medal included Elizabeth Bowey, Madison Hunt, Samantha Hunt, Nick Jones, Jocelyn MacPhail, Berlin Mastel, Munro Maxwell, Maria Pachan, Kaitlin Skrove and Elliot Valk.

Provincials start June 28 in Calgary, where both clubs will have athletes in the pool.
