The Medicine Hat Moose Monarchs are off to a hot start at the Mary Oikawa Memorial baseball tournament following an 11-8 victory over the host Lethbridge Elks to kick off the weekend Friday.

Jack Suhai kept Lethbridge’s pitchers and hitters on their heels after combining a relief pitching victory with 4 RBI in a 3-for-4 outing at the dish. Suhai entered for starter Tyran George in the third and held the Elks to three runs on three hits and three walks with four strikeouts over the next 4 and 1/3 innings before Ethan Boutkan stepped in for the save.

Monarchs outfielder Ethan Loran closed out his afternoon with 3 RBI in a 3-for-4 performance, while Theryn Berndt went 1-for-3 with 2 RBI and Tory Nelson was 2-for-4.

The Monarhcs return to the diamond at Spitz Stadium Saturday to take on the Calgary Junior Dinos at 9:30 a.m. and the East Central Bulls at 5 p.m. before closing out the group stage against the Calgary Redbirds Sunday at noon.

The teams with the top two records will advance into Sunday’s 2:30 p.m. championship game.
