Ayomanor leads the way at junior high zone track meet

It’s been a productive week for Medicine Hat’s Elic Ayomanor.

The junior high track athlete won the juvenile boys aggregate title at the South Zone meet in Lethbridge Tuesday, following up a similarly dominant showing at the local Sunny South Trials on the weekend at Rotary Track.

On Tuesday, Ayomanor —who goes to school at Notre Dame Academy and works with the Bulldogs track club —set a zone record in winning the 200 metre dash in 23.71 seconds. He wound up sweeping the sprints, crossing the 100 in 11.74 seconds and the 400 in 55.14.

The only event he entered but didn’t win was the triple jump, in which he was beat out for gold by Raymond’s Payson Hill. Still, the points added up for him to be the top point-getter in his 14- and 15-year-old age group.

At Sunny South Trials, he ran the 100 in 11.69 seconds, also taking the 200 and rarely-run 300, the long jump and triple jump to all but assure himself a spot at the Alberta Summer Games in Grande Prairie.

While Ayomanor was the most decorated Hat-area athlete at zones, he was far from the only one to make some noise and break some records.

— Irvine’s Makayla Cole won bantam girls javelin with a 26.22 metre throw.

— Claire Holt of St. Mary’s won juvenile girls high jump by clearing 1.49 metres. She was also second in triple jump and second in discus.

— Seven Persons’ Tesema Veurink won the bantam boys’ 400 metre dash in 1:00.01, the 800 in 2:20.70 and the javelin with a zone record 38.10 metres, plus took third in the 100.

— Shae Halladay, also from Seven Persons, won midget boys high jump with a new zone record of 1.75 metres.

— Brendan Olson of Seven Persons won juvenile boys 800 in 2:14.44 and the 1,500 in 4:40.66.

— Alexandra’s team of Dylan Callan, Michael Mamona, Jordan Mulder and Amos Rus-Haicu won the 4×400 open relay in 4:19.41.

The Sunny South meet’s results will be used to pick a Zone 1 team to compete in Grande Prairie July 19-22. There were plenty of highlights from the host Bulldogs club.

— Jayel Dovichak was second in midget girls 100 metre, then won the 300 and 800 and the high jump and long jump.

— Justine Renke won the 200 metre midget girls race.

—Ayla Wikjordwon midget girls 1,200.

— Kianna Farrell won youth girls 100, 200, 400 and 300 metre hurdles.

— Novalee Pender won youth girls triple jump.

— Faith Scrivener won youth girls shot put.

— Jacob Krueger won youth boys 3,000.

— Gage Reinhart won youth boys 300 hurdles.

— Renae Ryan won junior girls 100 metres.

—Jane Canadine won junior girls 200 and 400.

— Trevor Mickey won junior boys 1,500.

As for the Hat’s Panthers, Sarah Pimblett won the midget girls triple jump, Orin May won both youth boys 100 and 200 and Zachary Campbell the 400. In tyke girls Sydney Burgevitz won seven golds unopposed.

Notre Dame’s Sydney Anderson won midget girls shot put.
