Provincial and national titles might be the in-ring highlights of his season but Janick Lacroix can add another huge accomplishment to his boxing resume for 2018.

Lacroix, fighting out of the Medicine Hat Boxing Club, was named the best boxer in Alberta this past weekend at an awards ceremony in Edmonton. According to coach Kerry Fahlman, the last time someone from the club won the huge honour was Trevor Stewardson “in the early ’90s.”

Stewardson, who came to Medicine Hat by way of Thunder Bay, Ont., went on to compete in the 2004 Athens Olympics.

It wasn’t all about awards on the weekend, as Lacroix and Team Alberta were up against a team from Poland in the Challenge Cup. Lacroix won via split decision against Damian Laniecki in the 70 kilogram class.

Next up for Lacroix is the Alberta Golden Gloves in Red Deer later this month.
