Rugby team tops in Vulcan

Medicine Hat News

Their ultimate goal is a banner, but Medicine Hat’s high school boys rugby team now has a trophy to show for their efforts thus far this season.

The Mohawks — made up of players from all three Hat high schools —came out victorious at the Star Trek Tournament in Vulcan this past weekend.

They beat Calgary’s Notre Dame 36-5, Montana’s Sim 39-17 and the host Vulcan boys 36-0. The only game they didn’t win was against Calgary’s West Island College — a 5-5 draw in which each team had a try.

Both sides wound up undefeated so to decide who went home with the cup, it came down to whose head-to-head try happened first. That was Medicine Hat.

The Mohawks don’t play this week in their southern Alberta league. They’re in Lethbridge next week before their last home date, May 23 against Chinook.
