Medicine Hat College held its annual athletic awards banquet Thursday and the top awards went to a pair of graduating stars.

Kennedy Werre, who set multiple records with the women’s basketball team, was named female athlete of the year. Fellow fifth-year player Brodie Dolter, an all-conference player in men’s volleyball, got the male athlete of the year honour.

Werre, who will finish up her education degree next year, finishes her college eligiblity as the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference’s all-time rebounding leader, and Medicine Hat College’s all-time leading scorer to boot. The women’s basketball team got to nationals, one of two Rattlers crews to advance past the conference level this past season.

Dolter’s team hosted conference championships and won their last two matches at the Snake Pit to finish on a high. Time after time during the season, Rattlers coach Mark Porter referred to Dolter —an accounting major —as the best middle in the province.

There were plenty of other highlights for the school as well, and not all of them happened on the field of play. Tyler Olson of men’s volleyball and Brett Griscowsky of the golf team were named recipients of the Lisa Tschritter Memorial Award for their work in the community on behalf of the Rattlers, working everything from the Jingle and Mingle fundraiser to a charity mini-golf tournament last summer.

Rookies of the year also went to a women’s basketball player and a men’s volleyball player. Kate Rozdeba took the female honour while Chad Sieben the men’s.

Other major awards were the fan of the year —Joe Martineau (who could be seen in his regular spot courtside even when the women’s basketball team was in Nova Scotia earlier this month); Rattlers Appreciation —Peggy Kelly; and ACAC Minor Official of the Year —Lynn Konrad.
