It doesn’t get much better than winning the last game of the season, regardless of whether it’s for a medal or consolation.

Luckily for the Medicine Hat Rogue, there was hardware involved Sunday at under-14 B ringette provincials in Sherwood Park.

Rogue beat the Calgary Northwest Outlaws 2-1 for bronze, capping a stellar season where they grew as a team.

“I am so proud of this team,” said head coach Loralee Eastland in a press release. “Their work ethic and dedication all season was second to none. We overcame long odds, had three brand new players, a second year goaltender, and many girls play positions they hadn’t before.

“We always seemed to be able to claw our way back from deficits and that shows true grit and teamwork. This team came together as friends and truly finished the season with a bang!”

The weekend started well, with a 9-1 win over the host Sabotage. Wins of 4-2 over Indus Lightning and 9-2 over Spruce Grove Storm put them in prime position despite a 6-5 overtime loss to the Strathmore Ice to close out the round robin.

Overtime was not Medicine Hat’s friend in the semifinal either. Though they battled back twice to erase three-goal deficits against the Lacombe Edge, Lacombe scored with 1:41 left in a second overtime to win 8-7. Edge later won gold, 3-1 over Indus.

Known as a defensively-focused team, the Outlaws kept the score low and close in the third-place game but Medicine Hat found a way to win the medals.
