Medicine Hat’s peewee B girls hockey team had a magnificent run to the provincial final on home ice, then gave the Olds Grizzlys everything they could handle.

In the end, though, the Grizzlys wound up with the title banner Sunday at the Kinplex, thanks to a 2-1 overtime win in front of a boisterous crowd.

Her team on the power play in the extra frame, Olds’ No. 3 —Sydney Grover — went coast-to-coast and beat Hat goalie Maddy Ferguson 58 seconds in to the overtime. Her teammates threw off their gloves and helmets, ecstatic while the hometown Hounds were reminded how well they played to earn silver.

Kennedy Sisson had Medicine Hat’s lone goal in the final, which featured the Grizzlys dominating puck possession and in the shots department, 40-18.

Kourtney Asaris had Olds’ other goal, while Sydney Pound got the win in net.

Both teams finished the weekend with four wins. Medicine Hat went unbeaten until the final, including a 5-2 win over the 3 C’s Coyotes in a Sunday morning semifinal. Brianna Finke had a hat trick in that game.

Olds had dominated with a 9-0 semifinal win over Lloydminster, and outscored its opponents 33-3 during the tournament. Their only blemish —if you can call it that —was a 2-2 tie against the Coyotes to start the event.
