Fans hoping to ease their sorrows with a free cheeseburger following the Medicine Hat Tigers’ 4-3 overtime loss to the Brandon Wheat Kings on Saturday night were handed a raw deal instead — thankfully no one went hungry in the end.

The Tigers’ cheeseburger night promotion offers fans in attendance at the Canalta Centre a free cheeseburger at Wendy’s if the team scores in the final minute of regulation. Mark Rassell went on to notch his 100th career goal to force overtime with 38 seconds left on the clock, and many fans took the chance to redeem their ticket following the eventual loss. But those arriving at the Medicine Hat location were quickly informed of the fine print — the Tigers need to win the game too.

As if the loss wasn’t painful enough.

The beef led to an immediate uproar on social media with fans voicing their displeasure following an already disappointing overtime setback.

Thankfully the Tigers stepped in to simmer the situation later Saturday evening.

“Alright Tiger fans, the confusion with @WendysCanada has been sorted out,” the Tigers announced via Twitter. “You can head to the Medicine Hat location and show your ticket stub from tonight’s game to claim your cheeseburger anytime in the next 7 days.”
