It’s not the record she’s had her sights on, but Sage Watson will probably get to that one sooner than later if she keeps this up.

The Seven Persons product ran the 300 metre indoor race at the Millrose Games in New York Saturday in 37.08 seconds, better than the previous Canadian record time of 37.17 set by Jillian Richardson in 1988.

“Great way to start the season off!” she said on Twitter after the race.

Watson was second in the race to Olympic 400 metre champion Shaunae Miller-Uibo of the Bahamas, whose time of 35.45 seconds was a meet record.

Watson has said she’s targeting the Canadian 400 metre hurdles record set by Rosey Edeh at 54.39 seconds in the 1996 Atlanta Olympics. She ran 54.52 seconds in winning the NCAA championship last year.

After finishing sixth in the event at the world championships in August, the now-professional sprinter continues to improve and also recently signed a sponsorship deal with Nike. She’s scheduled to go to Australia in April to represent Canada at the Commonwealth Games.
