Medicine Hat News

The second-highest scoring women’s basketball team in the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference was shut down Friday by the Red Deer Queens.

Medicine Hat’s Rattlers fell 61-37 on the road, shooting just 28 per cent from the field despite leading 18-12 through the first quarter.

Incredibly, they only managed two points in the final frame as the hosts put a stamp on the upset.

Kennedy Werre had 11 points and six rebounds for the visitors, while Red Deer’s Emily White had 15 points and 13 boards.

At 11-4 the Rattlers remain second in their division, while Red Deer is now 7-7 and four points back of the fourth and final playoff spot. They remain in Red Deer to play the Queens again Saturday.

Men’s basketball

It was a character win for Medicine Hat’s men Friday, coming out 88-83 winners over the Kings in a game that saw six lead changes in the final 7:01.

DeAngelo Ashley’s putback and three-point play with a minute to go was the last turn of the tide.

Jon Sappleton had 22 points and 10 rebounds for the Rattlers, who also got 21 from Aaron Cameron (including five three-pointers) and 16 points and 13 rebounds from Osato Obaseki. Omon Edobar’s 24 points led Red Deer.

Medicine Hat improved to 13-3, while Red Deer fell to 8-7.

Women’s volleyball

Once they got rolling the Rattlers women’s volleyball team were tough to stop against an Olds side that remains winless on the season.

Medicine Hat won 3-0 (25-23, 25-19, 25-10) on the road, getting a balanced attack. Paige Burton and Brooke Christie each had nine kills, while setter Janessa Oelke led with three aces and 10 digs. Burton and MacKenzie Griffith each added three blocks as no Olds player had more than five kills on the night.

Now 6-15, the Rattlers rematch with the 0-21 Broncos Saturday. They’ve already been eliminated from post-season contention.

Men’s volleyball

Medicine Hat’s men’s volleyball team recovered from an ugly start to beat winless Olds 3-1 (16-25, 28-26, 25-18, 25-20).

The ACAC championship hosts improved to 12-9 while Olds fell to 0-21.

Vitor Pereira had 12 kills and nine digs to pace the Rattlers. Tyson Deschene piled on 20 kills in a losing cause.
