It’s going to be a big year for the Medicine Hat High School’s basketball teams.

The team will be hosting basketball provincials in 2018, and the senior boys’ team got off to a good start to its year Thursday by posting an 81-54 win over the Chinook Coyotes.

“I’m pretty happy,” said senior boys’ head coach Chad Watson. “The boys played pretty well. They got the ball inside and played some good defence. The team made sure that for the first 35 minutes or so, that they executed the game plan pretty well. We made some good shots in the second half that just weren’t falling in the first half, but in the last few minutes we did get a little lazy. Overall I’m happy with the team effort.”

Watson says part of the Mohawks’ game plan was to get the ball to six-foot-nine forward Bailey Gosse, who posted 19 points Thursday.

“Bailey is a really good player for us,” said Watson. “We’re trying to give him the ball as much as we can to see what he can do. He’s a manchild on the court. Not only is he gifted at scoring, but he also had three or four assists in the first half. He got us going early and it was a big part of why we won.”

Parker Davidson chipped in with 13 points of his own and Ben Menesho added 11. Watson says a strong overall game helped the Mohawks take their first win of the regular season.

The junior Mohawks played the early game of the night, and fell in a close game to Chinook by a score of 59-48.

Ethan Egert had 16 points for the junior Mohawks, and Austin Walton added 12 of his own in the loss.
