Rattlers aim for 5-0 start to ACAC women’s basketball season

By Medicine Hat News on November 3, 2017.

The Medicine Hat Rattlers women’s basketball team is on the hunt for history.

The Rattlers are 4-0 to start the Alberta Colleges Athletics Conference season, and with a pair of home games against the Olds Broncos (0-1) and Red Deer Queens (0-2) slated for this weekend, they can tie the school’s best start in the past decade — a 6-0 start from the 2013-14 squad — with two more wins.

Rattlers forward Kennedy Werre picked up where she left off last season, averaging a double-double with 16.3 points and 12.3 rebounds per game to start the year.

Werre also leads the team in steals with an average of two per game.

Kendell Kuntz sits third in the league for points-per-game with an average of 17.8, while fellow guard Courtney Henry leads the ACAC with a 66.7 three-point percentage.

Olds guard Kristina Bajovic and forward Brittney Thibeaux led the Broncos with 17 points apiece in their 71-65 season-opening loss to the SAIT Trojans, while Thibeaux added 13 rebounds.

The Rattlers are coming off a pair of wins in a home-and-home set with the Ambrose Lions (1-2) last weekend.

The Rattlers hit the hardwood Friday at 6 p.m. against the Broncos and Saturday at 1:30 p.m. against the Queens.

The Rattlers men’s squad (3-1) will look to string together a third consecutive victory in Friday’s 8 p.m. finale against the Broncos (0-1).

Guard Aaron Cameron leads the Rattlers with an average of 24.8 points per game to start the season.

Forward Osato Obaseki leads the Rattlers on the boards with an average of 11.3 rebounds per game, while guard Jon Sappleton has been shooting 57.4 per cent from the field and Josh Magpantay has been hitting 54.5 per cent of his three point attempts.

Abraham Murray led the Broncos in their 102-85 loss against SAIT to kick off the season. The forward recorded 18 points and added 10 rebounds. Guard Samuel Willis III added 17 points.
