The Medicine Hat Rattlers women’s volleyball team has played three, five-set matches this season — all of which they’ve lost.

The Rattlers women went the distance with the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology Trojans Friday, but eventually fell in the fifth set.

“I think that, at this point, we’re just really inconsistent,” said head coach Kim Stonehouse. “One team will show up for one set, then another will show up for the next set. I don’t think it’s whether or not we’re talented enough to come out and play with these teams, I just think it’s the consistency isn’t there yet. There’s a lot of errors coming from our side that we don’t need to make.”

The Rattlers won the first set 25-21, before dropping the second set 25-21. They then won the third set 25-16, and dropped the fourth set 25-17. SAIT was then able to secure the win in a back-and-forth fifth set 15-13.

“I don’t think it’s that we’re not prepared — not at all,” said Stonehouse. “I think a big part of it is the mental side of the game. Volleyball is a very mental game and right now we’re letting it get the upper hand. I think we need to get a hold of that, and stop letting it get to us. I think we’ll start to see better results and less errors once we can figure out the mental side of it.”

Though he team may be 0-3 to start the year, Stonehouse says she is proud of the way the team has played.

“These girls can battle,” she said. “Even when we drop a set, we find a way to take some momentum into the next set. We’ve proven in the last three matches that we won’t go down easy, and we won’t go down without a fight. We just need to learn to finish.”

Amber Stigter had 24 kills for the Rattlers, while Shaya Suchy had 21 digs for MHC.
