It was a cold, rainy night, but that couldn’t stop the red hot Crescent Heights Vikings.

Within four plays, and under one minute into Friday night’s Rangeland FootballConference game against the Monsignor McCoy Colts at the Methanex Bowl, the Vikings had a lead.

They didn’t look back.

The opening score came off of a safety, and the Vikings continued to find ways put points on the board all throughout the game, winning 54-0 and starting the season with five straight victories.

“It’s always good to get a win,” said Vikings head coach Dustin Ressler. “To be honest, I’m not completely satisfied. We didn’t execute like we planned to today and we need to be better than we were.”

The Vikings went into the half with a 37-0 lead, when referees called for a mercy rule —meaning the clock would run for the majority of the second half with no stoppages.

“I think it was a good team effort,” said Vikings centre Tylen Hieb. “We got it all done and we played a good game. I’m happy to get a win.”

Though the Vikings have started undefeated, the Colts are still looking for a victory.

“It’s frustrating,” said Colts coach Adrian Szola. “That’s all I can really say about it. We obviously need to be a lot better than we were tonight to start winning games. I think we really need to work on our tackling and cleaning up a lot of areas of our game.”

While the Colts did show flashes of offense, the team was plagued by penalties all night, says Szola.

“Mental mistakes have been killing us,” he said. “We have a lot to work on in practice.”

While the Vikings held a 46-0 lead into the final quarter and Ressler says he is happy with the win, he says he wants to see more from his team.

“I want to see perfection out there,” he said. “I think that’s why we’re able to do well, because the team is held at a high standard. Every team makes the playoffs, so we need to treat every game like our record is 0-0. We have a game against Hat High coming up and we need to be our best.”
