After eking out a low-scoring win to open their North District tournament in Havre, Medicine Hat’s K of C Knights hoped their bats would rise to the challenge Friday.

They did, but it still wasn’t enough in a 21-11 loss to the Lewistown Redbirds.

A six-run first inning in the Montana-Alberta American Legion A playoffs’ second day was exactly what the Knights hoped for. But Lewistown replied with seven of their own and ended up scoring in every inning, invoking the mercy rule thanks to a seven-run sixth and sending the Knights to the loser’s side of the double knockout bracket.

Leadoff hitter Eric Knox went 3-for-6 with 5 RBI for Lewistown, which next plays Lethbridge in an winner’s-side semifinal. Five Hat errors also were a factor, as only eight of the 21 runs were counted as earned.

Joel Herron went 2-for-3 with 3 RBI for Medicine Hat. Wyatt Bergen took the loss, throwing 96 pitches in three innings but leaving with his team only trailing 12-10.

The Knights next face Havre, which eliminated Tri-County with a 12-10 win Friday, in a must-win game Saturday. They need to win three straight to book a spot at the State A championship next weekend.
