The Friends of McCoy Society is a fundraising platform for Monsignour McCoy High School presently working in collaboration with the Medicine Hat Catholic Board of Education to build a theatre.

“We feel it’s time for our Catholic district to have a theatre,” said Helen Snortland, co-chair of The Friends of McCoy Society. “We have a strong fine arts program at present at all levels within the district with exceptional students and teachers and it’s time to have a facility to show off the talent and fine art growth.”

The production arts course at McCoy offers drama, acting, dance, technical theatre and performing arts, but the school doesn’t house an adequate space. Schools are spending considerable money renting theatres and it’s time for the money to stay in house.

In small ways, they had an online concert in the spring last year, box sales, and the beginnings of a concert series. Recently, a generous, anonymous donor stepped forward and offered $10,000 to the project. In addition, they offered a 24-hour match day where they would match any amount raised.

Match Day 2022 will be on Oct. 21 when there will be online opportunities for people to donate at http://tinyurl.com/MatchDay22 or by going to canadahelps.org and typing in Friends of McCoy Society.

The society will be at McCoy school from 7 a.m. until 7 p.m. There will be food trucks from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m. People can come by and donate in person during that time.

All other Catholic schools and the Medicine Hat Catholic Board of Education will be taking donations from 8 a.m. until 4 p.m. Alternatively, post-dated cheques can be mailed to the Friends of McCoy Society at 202 – 8 Street N.E. Medicine Hat, AB, T1A 6W2.

The donor has put out the challenge of their $10,000 to other companies or businesses that want to match the amount.

“We would love for the McCoy alumni to get involved with this project as it’s been a long time coming. We are very excited about the opportunity for these funds being matched on Oct. 21,” stated Snortland.

Tax receipts will be given for all donations over $20.
