RUDY STEINKEY
RUDY STEINKEY 1951 ~ 2024
Rudolph “Rudy” Steinkey passed away on Thursday, October 3, 2024, at the age of 73 years, beloved husband of Elaine Steinkey of Medicine Hat. He also leaves to cherish his memory five children, Sheldon (Jody), Kimberly (Sean), Pamela (Clayton), Shane (Jaime), and Shaun (Mel); thirteen grandchildren, Stephanie, Brianne, Miranda, Connor, Hailey, Nickolas, Ty, Brooklyn, Shayla, Carter, Collins, Kaycee, and Kylee; his great grandchild, Kylan; his brother, Tony (Bonny) Steinkey; two sisters, Victoria (George) Jabour and Rose (Don) Ebelher; his mother-in-law, Lena Eresman as well as numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, Elizabeth and John Steinkey; his father-in-law, Nick Eresman and his brother-in-law, Harry Kurtz.
Rudy was born in Leader, Saskatchewan and grew up on a farm southwest of Liebenthal, Saskatchewan. He married Elaine on October 6, 1973. Dad was bigger than life to his family. As the grandkids would say, “If Grandpa can’t fix it, nobody can.” Dad loved farming and outdoor life. He lived to putter, fix, and organize, and at the end of the day, to sit around a fire enjoying the peace and quiet. Come spring or fall, his favourite sound was the geese honking as they flew overhead or settled on dugouts and sloughs.
He loved our mom three days short of 51 years. They made a great team! He was so proud of his family and there was nothing he wouldn’t do to help us. He loved us unconditionally.
Dad sat on many community boards, coached ball, and was Grand Knight of the Liebenthal Knights of Columbus Council from 1985 to 1987. He was a busy man. In addition to farming full time, he also worked in the gas patch. His faith and love of music and dancing helped him get through his last few months. His feet were always tapping, and on his better days, he would ask Mom to dance. As his disease progressed, we were amazed how he kept his sense of humour, his patience, and accepted his suffering without complaint. He said he had a good life and can die a happy man. Rest in peace Dad.
