MARY ELEANOR DeWOLFE

MARY ELEANOR DeWOLFE
It is with great sadness, the family of Mary DeWolfe wish to inform that she slipped away in her sleep July 20, 2024, at the Medicine Hat Regional Hospital after a lengthy battle with cancer.
Mary Eleanor DeWolfe was born in St. Stephen, New Brunswick on November 23, 1949, as the fourth child of Mary Pauline (Welock) and Charles Howard DeWolfe. The family moved to Fredericton, NB in 1962. Mary’s musical talents were recognized early on and she excelled in both piano and singing, winning numerous awards. In high school, Mary got involved in the vibrant folk music scene in Fredericton. Tiny in stature but with huge talent and a big voice, Mary went on to perform professionally for many years across Canada.
Mary had a penchant for adventures and this led her and her family to Montreal, Edmonton, the Annapolis Valley, Victoria, and Medicine Hat. Wherever Mary lived, she developed many close friendships and left her mark on the community. Mary cared deeply for her fellow humans and was a champion of women’s and civil rights, pivoting from her music career to take on the role as Executive Director of Chrysalis House in Kentville, Nova Scotia from 1990 until her retirement in 2007 when she and her husband, Keith, moved back to Medicine Hat to be near family.
A staunch member of the NDP, Mary ran for the party provincially in Nova Scotia and was active in the party wherever she lived. Tommy Douglas, Ed Broadbent, Alexa McDonough, and Jack Layton were her role models.
Mary was predeceased by her parents, and siblings Polly (Pauline), Ian, and Frank. She is survived by her husband, Keith Rae, daughter Carmen, son Jesse (Nicole), her beloved grandchildren Olivia, Sophia, and Joe, brothers Malcolm (Julia), John (Margaret), sister Madeleine, numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. She is deeply missed by her family and friends.
A Celebration of Mary’s Life will be held on September 22, 2024 at 3:30pm:
