It has been just over one week since Father Vincent celebrated Mass for Ken Bachmeier, a faithful servant of the church. A heart warming number of friends joined family in paying tribute to this man who meant so much to so many. He will be missed!

EPHRAIM HAAS August 19, 1931 December 19, 2023
Ephraim Haas, beloved husband of the late Alice Haas, passed away at Age Care Valleyview, December 19, 2023, at the age of 92 years. Ephraim’s memories are cherished by, his daughter, Joyce (David) McNaughton; grandchildren – Devin (Sheila) McNaughton with Hunter, Tiana & Ashton; Elden (Karen) McNaughton with Kelsey, Bridget (Elvis) Isacs & Erin; daughter-in-law, Bonnie Haas – Wesley (Norma Mitchell) Haas with Zyiaya; Trevor Haas; his son, Dale (Karen) Haas – Daniel (Mareen) Haas with Quinn; Matthew (Jennifer) Haas with Lillianna & London; and Rebecca (Robert) Cale with Emma & Owen; his sister, Lorene (Reuben) Ehret; brother, Floyd (Marion) Haas; sister-in-law, Audrey Haas; and his numerous nieces and nephews all appreciated this man with a big heart and many talents. He was predeceased by his wife, Alice (Bischke) Haas; son, Wade Haas; parents, Adam & Matilda Haas; brother, Richard Haas; parents-in-law, William & Mary Bischke; and all three of Alice’s siblings and their spouses, Leah (Herb) Ginther, Reuben (Agnes) Bischke, and Edna (Don) Kanewischer.

Ephraim was born in Medicine Hat on August 19, 1931, and raised on the farm near Hilda, Alberta. He attended a one room school near the farm and finished his schooling in Hilda. He started driving horses and the tractor before age 12 and worked alongside his father fixing vehicles and farm equipment. So, it was no surprise when his first jobs away from home were working in a garage in Sundre, Alberta and at Benny Motors in Medicine Hat. He attended SAIT to complete his Automotive Apprenticeship. The rest of his working days include: – partner at Hilda Motors, – Highway 41 construction equipment mechanic, (in Medicine Hat, starting in 1961) – at Reidy Ford, – Partner & founder of Big M Motors, – owner of Crescent Heights Shell Station, – portable air conditioning services for farmers, – EPH Auto Appraisals, and – Sales person for Chinook Village Suites. During these years he was on the Advisory Board of the Canadian Ford Motor Company, a member of the Alberta Provincial Apprenticeship Board, and the president of Southern Alberta’s Automobile Retailers Association (ARA).

Dad’s family attended the Evangelical Church in Hilda where he learned to sing. Later in Medicine Hat, he started singing in a quartet at Memorial Church where he met Alice Bischke singing in the choir. He married the love of his life on December 30,1950. They lived in Hilda until 1961. Their three children were added to their home by November 1954.

Ephraim volunteered with his many interests and talents including singing bass for many years with the Medicine Hat Barber Shop chorus and quartets and with Hillcrest Church’s choirs, men’s chorus and quartets. He was also: a First Aider with St. Johns Ambulance, Ham Radio Operator, a leader with the Optimist Club, mowed grass and maintained the equipment at Whispering Pines Camp. He was an avid gardener starting his prize tomatoes, peppers and flowers from seeds (and always had enough extras to give to family and friends). He enjoyed his riding mower – keeping the green space behind his house and many of the neighbour’s yards well maintained to the edge of the coulee.

Ephraim and Alice hosted many events for neighbours, family and friends. They made everyone feel welcome and accepted. He often said what a great travelling companion Alice was as they went on many vacations with family and friends to various destinations around the world.

Dad & Mom’s faith was important to them and one of Dad’s favorite songs was “Step into the Water” and the last verse says: “There is victory for the Christian, who walks the narrow way. There has been a prize appointed, for the soul who does not stray. Oh, I want to live for Jesus, be all that I should be; so that I can rest with him forever, and live eternally.”

The Memorial Service will be held at Hillcrest Evangelical Missionary Church (3785 13th Avenue SE) on Saturday, February 17, 2024, at 1:30PM with Pastor Michael Deibert officiating.
