HENRY HAUGAN

HENRY HAUGAN May 24, 1928 ~ October 8, 2023
Henry Haugan passed away on October 8th, 2023 at the age of 95 years after a brief hospitalization. Henry was born on the Haugan farm on May 28, 1928 to Lars and Anna Haugan. His education included grades 1 – 9 at Orion School. He was a student at Olds College from 1944 – 1945 and he attended Calgary Tech from 1951 – 1953. In the next chapter of his life, he would meet his “life-long soul-mate to be” Mary Lou Peter. Henry and Mary Lou were married on October 22, 1955 at Fifth Avenue Memorial United Church in Medicine Hat. They shared a life of accomplishments with devotion to each other. Henry possessed a deep and steady affection for his family. He devoted a life of hard work to the Haugan Family Farm near Orion. Henry and Mary Lou were blessed with the gift of their four children; Pamela,Byron, Lyndon and Arden ; fourteen grandchildren: Kendra, Nevin, Colin, Courtney, Brodie, Everett, Karli, Nickola, Erika, Alexa, Tate (lived for 7 days), Charlotte, Delaney and Martie; six adorable great-grandchildren; Neve, Ailish, Brooks-Henry, Sasha, Raya and Remy. Henry had three sisters. Ila and Amy have both passed with Helen left to mourn his passing. Henry remembered that when they were all very young, his sisters put on a birthday party for him and they invited all of their girlfriends! Henry and Mary Lou have experienced a variety of travel destinations, some of which included Nashville, Norway, New Zealand and many more. They loved to social dance and a fun chapter for them was the eight years they spent square-dancing. There were so many games of bridge played and Henry also enjoyed a good game of crib. Henry served on the original Board of Directors of Forty-Mile Gas Co-op from 1973 – 1997. He also served as a Director of Cypress Rural Electrification Association from 1953 – 1993. In June calf brandings brought the excitement of camaraderie and the accomplishment of the task at hand. He was very proud of the following award that their family received in 2009: Farm and Ranch Award Recognizing The Haugan Family For 100 Years Of Family Ranching On The Original Homestead (1909 – 2009). Retirement has been at their condo at Cottonwood Coulee Villas where Henry and Mary Lou are so thankful for their comfort, security and special view from their condo.
