Mary Brown passed away with her family at her side on August 17, 2023 at the age of 90 years. Mary leaves to cherish her memory her devoted companion, Ken Holmes; children, sons, Lyle Stenger (Yvonne), Thomas Stenger (Kim), Clifford Stenger (Jennifer Cote), Brad Stenger (Cheryl), siblings, Betty Martin, George Kiebel (Geraldine), Sophie Skappak; 13 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her parents, Joseph and Margaret Kibel; husband, Art Brown; sons, Leonard Stenger and Neil Stenger; brother, James; and brothers-in-law, Hugh Martin and Art Skappak. Mary Brown was born to Joseph and Margaret Kibel January 6, 1933 in her parents’ homestead farmhouse located northwest of Empress, Alberta. Mary was the oldest of five children. She worked at the Empress Hospital before meeting and marrying her first husband, Joseph Stenger, and they lived and farmed in Empress, AB until Mary moved to Medicine Hat in 1970. Mary married Herbert “Art” Brown and they lived together in Medicine Hat until Art’s passing. Mary later met Ken Holmes and he has been by her side for the last 22 years. Together they moved to Manitoba where they built three hemp manufacturing plants. After retiring from the hemp business, they purchased a home on Athapapuscow Lake on Sally’s Beach near Flin Flon, MB. They found the winters too long and cold, so they moved back to Medicine Hat. Mary loved to go fishing with Ken on Athapapuscow Lake and surrounding lakes. One season she caught the largest rainbow trout on Scotty Lake. Always wanting some excitement and something different to do, after moving back to Medicine Hat, she went gold mining with Ken at Quartz Creek near Golden, BC. They didn’t find much gold but they met many new friends and had fun. Mary travelled all over western Canada with Ken where they made many more new friends. A highlight in her life was when they travelled to Hawaii on a vacation with Ken’s family. However, they missed the Flin Flon area, so they purchased a cabin at Cranberry Portage on Athupapuscow Lake to spend their summers but unfortunately had to sell the cabin after one season because of Mary’s deteriorating health. She continued to live with Ken in Dunmore, AB until her health forced her to move into a home. Mary lived at Masterpiece briefly until she moved to The Wellington where she resided until her passing. Ken supported her and visited her at the Wellington every day. Mary was a very strong-willed, hard-working person who was always helping someone, whether it was loaning them some money, driving them to an appointment, cleaning their house, etc. When asked what she wanted to be written in her obituary she said, “Tell them I loved to work”. When asked how she would describe her life in one sentence she said, “I had some lumps, I had some bumps and I had some dreadful falls, but I had a good life” A come and go in Mary’s honour will be held in the Wellington Chapel, 1595 Southview Drive SE, Medicine Hat, AB on Friday, August 25th, 2023 from 1:00 4:00 pm. A family interment will be held at St. Peter and Paul Cemetery south of Acadia Valley, Alberta at a later date. REBECCA MANDEL 1943 ~ 2023 It is with heavy hearts that the family of Rebecca Mandel, wife of the late Rev. Paul Mandel, announce her passing on August 18 at the age of 80 years. Mom closed her eyes and passed away peacefully in her sleep with her family by her side. She was a devout Christian and loved her Lord Jesus Christ dearly with all her heart. She could be seen spending most of her spare time reading the Gospel or singing hymns to praise God. Mom always put everyone’s needs ahead of her own and never complained that the load she carried was too much. She was the best Mother, Grandmother and Great-Grandmother we could ever ask for and we will miss her presence dearly. She leaves to cherish her memory to her children: sons, Tim (Mary), Jerry, Steve (Adina), Paul and Dan; daughters, Theresa (Amos), Adina (Larry) of Leader, SK. and Laura (Rev. Peter) as well as 24 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren. DEBORAH LEE GRUNWALD

DEBORAH LEE GRUNWALD April 23rd, 1963 August 13th, 2023 Deborah Grunwald passed away on August 13th, 2023, at the age of 60 years. She leaves to cherish her partner for 33 years, Douglas Harder; sons, Joshua Grunwald and Nickolas Grunwald (Courtney Carry) and their son, J.J.; daughter, Nickole Grunwald; brother, Greg Marsh; sister, Kathy Babineau; mother-in-law, Mavis Harder; sister-in-law, Debbie (Kelly) Henderson; as well as many nieces and nephews.
Deborah was predeceased by her parents, William and Valerie Marsh; father-in-law, Terry Harder
Deborah was born and raised in Medicine Hat. She completed her education at Olds College as a Horticulturist. Deborah enjoyed camping, baseball and loved the outdoors and her work. She also loved pets, especially her dog, Rigel. Deborah worked for the City of Medicine Hat in the Parks & Recreation Department for 38 years.
Her contagious laugh and incredible zest for life was only bested by her amazing beauty and smile. She stole every room she entered and immediately won over every heart she touched.

LEONA CANTALINI

LEONA CANTALINI August 7, 2023 Leona Cantalini peacefully passed away at the Good Samaritan Society in Medicine Hat on Monday, August 7, 2023. Leona was born one of 12 children to John and Katherine Hannas. As a young lady age 14, she left home and moved to the Edmonton area to help care for her sister’s children. She was always so dependable and helping family came naturally to her. Leona later gained employment as a front desk receptionist in the hotel business at Sexsmith. She proved to be a very responsible employee with a keen eye to detail. Leona met and married George Cantalini and their marriage was blessed with the birth of their son, Tony. They made Medicine Hat their home where she continued to work in the hotel business alongside her husband. She had a zest for life and enjoyed to go for long walks, golf and curl. Leona was a sweet lady who had a smile that would light up the room! She was a caring, wonderful lady who will be deeply missed by her friends and family. Leona will be remembered by her nephew, Jerry (Helena) Green of Creston, B.C. She was heartbroken with the loss of her dear son, Tony in 2006; husband, George in 1962, and her parents. VI HOUFF 1931 – 2023 It is with much gratefulness for the love she gave each of us that we announce the passing of our Mom, Vi Houff of Medicine Hat on Friday, August 18, 2023, at the age of 92 years, beloved wife of the late John Houff. She leaves to cherish her memory four children, Cheryl (Delvin) Heller, Sylvia (Steve) Clark, Debbie Houff and Don (Brenda) Houff, twelve grandchildren, twenty great grandchildren and five great, great grandchildren; one sister, Leona Leismeister, one sister-in-law Emily Howkins, as well as numerous nephews and nieces. She was predeceased by her husband John, her parents Olga and Otto Sieppert, and three sisters Jean Vaughn, Arylene Schimpf and Minnie Houff.
Mom and Dad were true partners on the dairy farm and it was often commented that she was as strong as, and worked as hard as, a man. While she worked hard at her outside chores, she also made the time and somehow found the energy to be an accomplished homemaker. She was particularly known as the best bread baker and pickle maker around.
