VERONICA SWAN

VERONICA SWAN September 14, 1929 ~ July 25, 2023
Veronica Swan, beloved wife of the late James Gretton Swan and daughter of Mary Josephine Gleeson and Albert Edward Manning, was born on September 14th, 1929, in Nenagh, Tipperary, Ireland, the 7th of 11 children. Known then as ‘Ronnie”, she was a feisty and adventurous child who loved to learn and was eager for new experiences. At 16, she moved to London, England to live with her Auntie Kit, and found employment with a job in the Civil Service. She later met James ‘Gretton’ Swan, freshly demobilized from the RAF, who became the love of her life. They married in 1951, then immigrated to Canada in 1953 with their first daughter, Rosaleen. Gretton worked as a Chemist in Edmonton, later moving to Bowden, Alberta to work as a Physics and Chemistry teacher. Their children Michael and Deirdre were born. More moves and more children followed Patricia, Mary and Philip. Their last move in 1964 was to Medicine Hat where the family enjoyed growing up in their big old house with many wonderful neighbours. Gretton retired from teaching in 1985, and he and Veronica subsequently enjoyed many exciting travels to China, Turkey, Spain, Trinidad, Colombia, cruises through the Panama Canal and the West Coast to Juno, Alaska, plus visits to see family in Ontario, British Columbia, England and Ireland.

Veronica and Gretton were dedicated environmentalists, activists, and gardeners and very involved in the community. In 2008, Veronica received the City of Medicine Hat Civic Environmental Award for ‘Extraordinary Contribution to the Community’. She served as Leader of the Grasslands Naturalists, President of the St. Patrick’s Church C.W.L. and on the Medicine Hat Catholic School Board as a Trustee. Veronica also taught Irish Dancing, which she had learned as a child. Veronica was a great mom, always expecting her children to do their best.

Veronica was predeceased by her parents and siblings, including an infant twin brother as well as her loving son Michael in 1986, and her loving husband Gretton in 2010. She is survived by her remaining children, their spouses, 13 grandchildren, 9 great-grandchildren, brother-in-law Kerry, sister-in-law Ina, and many special nieces and nephews in Ireland, Canada, US and the UK. She is also survived by special dear friends.

JERRY ZAHN

JERRY ZAHN August 11, 1944 ~ August 16, 2023 Jerome ‘Jerry’ John Zahn, loving husband of the late Faye Zahn, passed away at South Country Village in Medicine Hat on Wednesday, August 16, 2023, at the age of 79 years. Left to remember nothing but beautiful memories are his family: daughter, Corinna (Ken) Wuitchik and their children, Jesse (Erin) and Miller (Megan); daughter, Denise (Rob) Rehm and their children, Brianne (Blythe), Abby (Connor) and Jayke as well as his siblings, Leroy (Sandra), Stan (Jeanette) and Brenda. Jerry loved the simple things in life including working with tools, socializing, attending car shows with the boys and especially gardening. He had a green thumb like no other and knew exactly what plants would grow best where. Jerry spent many of his days landscaping not only his and Faye’s yard but his family’s as well. Anyone that knew Jerry, could not say anything bad about him. He was never mad at anyone and had an especially soft spot for his girls. Family meant everything to Jerry as he loved spending time with them; especially his grandchildren when he could teach them about his hobbies. He could often be found wearing his hat, with a coffee in hand, whistling away. Faye meant everything to Jerry and her passing in May left him with a broken heart that could never be fixed. His legacy of love, laughter and friendship will be deeply missed! Jerry’s life will be silently remembered by family and friends without the proceedings of a formal funeral service. 1933 – MARY BROWN -2023

1933 – MARY BROWN -2023
Mary Brown passed away with her family at her side on August 17, 2023 at the age of 90 years. Mary leaves to cherish her memory her children, sons, Lyle Stenger (Yvonne), Thomas Stenger (Kim), Clifford Stenger (Jennifer Cote), Brad Stenger (Cheryl), siblings, Betty Martin, George Kiebel (Geraldine), Sophie Skappak; 13 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her parents, Joseph and Margaret Kibel; husband, Art Brown; sons, Leonard Stenger and Neil Stenger; brother, James; and brothers-in-law, Hugh Martin and Art Skappak. Mary Brown was born to Joseph and Margaret Kibel January 6, 1933 in her parents’ homestead farmhouse located northwest of Empress, Alberta. Mary was the oldest of five children. She worked at the Empress Hospital before meeting and marrying her first husband, Joseph Stenger, and they lived and farmed in Empress, AB until Mary moved to Medicine Hat in 1970. Mary married Herbert “Art” Brown and they lived together in Medicine Hat until Art’s passing. Mary later met Ken Holmes and he has been by her side for the last 22 years. Together they moved to Manitoba where they built three hemp manufacturing plants. After retiring from the hemp business, they purchased a home on Athapapuscow Lake on Sally’s Beach near Flin Flon, MB. They found the winters too long and cold, so they moved back to Medicine Hat. Mary loved to go fishing with Ken on Athapapuscow Lake and surrounding lakes. One season she caught the largest rainbow trout on Scotty Lake. Always wanting some excitement and something different to do, after moving back to Medicine Hat, she went gold mining with Ken at Quartz Creek near Golden, BC. They didn’t find much gold but they met many new friends and had fun. Mary travelled all over western Canada with Ken where they made many more new friends. A highlight in her life was when they travelled to Hawaii on a vacation with Ken’s family. However, they missed the Flin Flon area, so they purchased a cabin at Cranberry Portage on Athupapuscow Lake to spend their summers but unfortunately had to sell the cabin after one season because of Mary’s deteriorating health. She continued to live with Ken in Dunmore, AB until her health forced her to move into a home. Mary lived at Masterpiece briefly until she moved to The Wellington where she resided until her passing. Ken supported her and visited her at the Wellington every day. Mary was a very strong-willed, hard-working person who was always helping someone, whether it was loaning them some money, driving them to an appointment, cleaning their house, etc. When asked what she wanted to be written in her obituary she said, “Tell them I loved to work”. When asked how she would describe her life in one sentence she said, “I had some lumps, I had some bumps and I had some dreadful falls, but I had a good life” A come and go in Mary’s honour will be held in the Wellington Chapel, 1595 Southview Drive SE, Medicine Hat, AB on Friday, August 25th, 2023 from 1:00 4:00 pm. A family interment will be held at St. Peter and Paul Cemetery south of Acadia Valley, Alberta at a later date. Mom’s family want to thank the staff at the Wellington, Dr. Shrives, Dr. Deri-Gillespie, Dr. Keshvara, Nurse Shauna, Emergency Dept. Dr. Faul and Nurse Krista and a huge thank you to Mom’s companion, Ken Holmes, who has always been there for Mom .
