BURLEY, JOHN
BURLEY, JOHN August 15, 1949 – June 1, 2023 John Burley passed away on Thursday, June 1, 2023 at the age of 73 years.
John will be dearly missed by his wife of 35 years Colleen Burley; and two step-sons Rob Morgan (Rhonda) of Burbank, CA, and Liam Morgan of Calgary; Grandchildren Braden & Brooke Morgan. John is also survived by a brother Michael Burley (Wai Tung Kang) of England; two sisters Frances Nunn and Christina Holloway, both in England, and other family and many friends.
John was predeceased by his parents Richard and Susan Burley; and a sister Rita Burley.
John was born and raised in the UK, educated at Oxford and then joined the British Army where he worked in the area of procurement. He was transferred to the UK military base in Suffield, Alberta where met and married Colleen. Medicine Hat became their home until moving to Calgary a few years ago as a result of needed medical care. John had a terrific sense of humour and always enjoyed a good time. He was a fine patron of “Up the Creek” where he spent time with many good friends. As a lover of “Football” and the Premier League, he followed and cheered for his favourite team Manchester United. Colleen & John loved to travel and made many wonderful memories on their trips to Jamaica. John was intelligent, hard working, generous and very kind. He will be dearly missed by family and friends. VERN RUFF 1942 ~ 2023 Vernon Edward Ruff, beloved husband of 62 years to Marlene, passed away peacefully while in the comfort of his home on Saturday, June 10, 2023, at the age of 81 years. Along with Marlene, Vern’s memory will forever remain in the hearts of his family: daughter, Joni (Murray) and their family, Justin (Amy), Ben (Megan) and Will †; son, Jim (Angie) and their family, Nico, Noah and Talia; daughter, Kathy (Carmen) and their family, Courtney (Jared), Cameron (Hannah), Paige (Joel), Chad (Brittany) and their son Cooper as well as Austin (Mikaela). Vern is survived by two brothers, Ray (Bernie) and family, Bob (Lyndell) and family as well as numerous nieces, nephews and other extended family. Along with his parents, William and Louise Ruff, Vern was predeceased by a grandson, Will Bouchard as well as a nephew, Rob Ruff. Vern was born in Medicine Hat on March 8, 1942. While still in High School, he started working with his brother, Ray for their Dad at the family garage, Bill’s Automotive Ltd. They eventually purchased the garage, continuing the family business until their retirement. Relatives and friends are invited to a come and go celebration of Vern’s life to be held in the Cook Southland Reception Facility, 901 – 13 Street S.W., Medicine Hat on Tuesday, June 20, 2023, between 10:00 a.m. and Noon. MARY RICHARDS
RICHARDS, Mary 1950 2023
Mary Richards of St. Albert, Alberta, passed away peacefully from heart disease on June 8, 2023, at the age of 73 with her family by her side.
Mary was born in February of 1950, in Medicine Hat, Alberta, the oldest of three children born to Balzer and Cora Reider. She graduated from McCoy High School in Medicine Hat and went on to hairdressing school.
Her hairdressing was short lived as her first of four children came along shortly after she married Al on May 23, 1970. Tyler was born in 1970, Tammy in 1972, Lisa in 1973, and then Ryan in 1978. She took great pride in raising and being there for her family which was and has always been the most important thing to her. Once the kids were older she went on to work at Lilydale and worked there until 2005, when she retired at the age of 55.
With her children grown and starting families of their own, Mary was blessed with seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren who were her pride and joy.
Mary is predeceased by her father, Balzer Reider; sister, Shirley Reiger; brothers-in-law, Lorne Reiger and Bryn Richards; as well as her sister-in-law, Marie Richards.
Mary is lovingly survived by her husband of 53 years, Alan Richards; her children, Tyler, Tammy (Korey), Lisa (Edwin), Ryan (Rochelle); her grandchildren, Shania (Justin), Samantha, Sean (Jesalyn), Dawson (Shea), Gage, Cole, and Brooklyn; as well as her great-grandchildren, Liam and Ella. She is also lovingly survived by her mother, Cora Reider; and brother, Dennis (Nary) Reider.
There will be a viewing on Friday, June 16, 2023, at 4:00 p.m. in St. Albert Funeral Home, 9 Muir Drive with cremation to follow. Her Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Saturday, June 24, 2023, at 3:00 p.m. in St. Albert Catholic Church, 7 St. Vital Ave. A dinner and celebration of her life will be held the same day at 5:00 p.m. at St. Albert Community Hall, 17 Perron Street.

SHIRLEY MAE WINNIFRED HEINE (BIGGS) November 5th, 1934 June 11th, 2023
Shirley Mae Heine (nee Biggs) of Medicine Hat, Alberta, beloved wife of Doug Heine, passed away peacefully at Riverview Care Centre on Sunday, June 11th, 2023 at the age of 88 years. Shirley was born, raised and educated in Medicine Hat.
She had a deep love of music and was gifted with a beautiful singing voice. As a result, she focused her education in the arts by obtaining her Associate Degree (ARCT) Diploma in music. She used her gifts to enrich generations of students by instilling a love of music, its history and theory. In addition to private lessons, she taught Early Introduction to Music to all kindergarten classes in Medicine Hat. Shirley enjoyed directing Adult, Youth, and Childrens Choirs. She volunteered for many years with the Rotary Music Festival.
Shirley belonged to the Choristers Guild of America, was a member of PEO, and attended St Barnabas Church. She was a member of Cottonwood Coulee Golf Course and enjoyed golfing around the world. She was a proud member of the “hole in one” club.
Family trips included camping in Sorrento and attending music camps around North America. Travelling internationally began with volunteering as a family for the Commonwealth Games in Brisbane, Australia in 1982. Since then, they have travelled to all 7 continents, which included a 68-day Cruise to South America and Antarctica. Other memorable destinations were a Safari in Africa, River Cruises, trips to Europe, Israel, and numerous other countries. “Ever the Adventurer”, Shirley rode camels in Egypt, Dolphins in Mexico, Ostriches in Africa and Elephants in Thailand.
Shirley is survived by her husband of 68 years, Doug Heine. Doug and Shirley were sweethearts in high school and were married on July 30th, 1954. She is also survived by one son, Kent (Ruth) Heine and their children, Jordan (Sondra) Heine, Andrea (Chad) Coene, and Sarah Heine (Cory Hauge); daughter, Sharon (Mickey) Todd and their children, Jennifer (Vay) Tu, Jordan (Tarla) Todd, and Nathan Todd (Billy Teng); great-grandchildren, Kien Tu, Harper Tu, Paisley Coene, and Hudson Heine.
She was predeceased by her parents, George and Dorothy Biggs; her brother, Gordon Biggs, and sister, Queenie Miller; Doug’s father, John Heine, and stepfather, Rudolph Heine; mother, Rose Heine (Maves), and an infant son, Gerald Heine, who died at birth.
Sadly, Shirley was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s in 2011 and spent many years in the loving hands of the caregivers at Riverview Care Centre. Those wishing to remember Shirley may do so through a donation to the Alzheimer Society at #101, 1201 Kingsway Ave SE, Medicine Hat, Alberta T1A 2Y2.
She was a very faithful Christian, who set a strong example for all of us to follow. The Funeral Service will be held at St. Barnabas Anglican Church, 635 – 4 Street SE, Medicine Hat AB T1A 0L1, on Friday, June 23rd, 2023 at 2:00 pm with Rev Oz Lorentzen officiating. It is with sadness that the family of Theodore Richard Dennis Herman announce his peaceful passing at the Medicine Hat Regional Hospital on Wednesday, June 14, 2023. Left to cherish his memory is his wife of 54 years, Kathleen Herman (nee Wyatt); eldest son, Dennis “Ross” Herman; son, Ryan (Ariana) Herman and their children, Sheridyn and Zach; son, Todd (Valerie) Herman and their children, Molly, Sophie, and Charlie; daughter, Kerri (Bill) Stait and their children, Brooke and Will. Also left to cherish his memory are his brothers, Tom Herman, Jim (Renee) Herman, Nolan Herman and friend, Betty Morin; sisters, Bonnie Hartung, Dixie Vair, Lois (Randy) Beck; cousin Donna Martin; brother-in-law, Don (Diane) Wyatt as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Dennis was predeceased by his parents, Ted and Irene Herman; brother Bernie; father and mother-in-law, Bill and Vivian Wyatt; Uncle Edwin Herrmann; Aunt Vera Herrmann; sister-in-law, Antonia Herman; brothers-in-law, Don Vair and Ted Wyatt as well as his cousin-in-law, Larry Martin. Dennis was a dedicated family man and a great friend to many. He loved farming and ranching to his core and spent much of his life serving the communities of Schuler, Cypress County and Medicine Hat through service on Schuler community boards, councilor and Reeve of Cypress County, Chair of MH and District Health Unit and long time secretary/treasurer of Drowning Ford Grazing Association. Dennis’ thoughtfulness, kindness and reasoned approach to many challenges made him a valued leader in all of the endeavors he was involved in. A Celebration of Dennis’ life will take place at the Carriage House on the Medicine Hat Stampede Grounds, 2055 – 21 Avenue S.E., Medicine Hat on Monday, June 19, 2023, at 12:00 p.m. Following the celebration, those in attendance are encouraged to stay for a beef on a bun meal and the sharing of memories. MARY SIMPSON March 4, 1933 ~ June 13, 2023
Mrs. Mary Simpson, beloved wife of the late Mr. James Simpson, passed away peacefully with family by her side in Medicine Hat on Tuesday, June 13, 2023, at the age of 90 years. Mary leaves to cherish her memory: two daughters, Maureen Simpson (William Lee) and their family, James and Robert; Joann (Chris) Workman and their family, Joseph (Kyla) and Caroline; brother, Bernard (Kathleen) Koontz; sister, Phyllis (Bill) Nield; sister-in-law, Adeline Harrison as well as cousins, nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents, Joseph and Helen Kuntz. On March 4, 1933, Mary Kuntz entered this world during a spring snow storm in Fox Valley, Saskatchewan. She was the eldest of three children to Helen and Joseph Kuntz. Mary spent her early childhood years on the farm, learning the value of hard work, practicing her faith, and demonstrating perseverance. After the loss of her father at the age of eight, the Kuntz family eventually settled in Medicine Hat. After graduating from St Theresa Academy, Mary boarded the train to Victoria, BC. Mary studied at St Joseph’s School of Nursing. Upon graduation, Mary took her nursing education back to Medicine Hat, specializing in labour and delivery. Furthering her education, Mary traveled to Jersey City, New Jersey where she completed her postgraduate training in labour and delivery at the Margaret Hague Maternity Hospital. Afterwards, Mary accepted a position in Medicine Hat as the clinical instructor on labour and delivery. There she was able to offer guidance and knowledge to fellow nurses and support the expectant mothers. It was during this time Mary met James Simpson, and they married on May 13th, 1961. While raising her children she continued her nursing career part time as a clinical instructor and eventually retired from nursing at Central Park Lodge. Mary and Jim cherished 43 years together, sharing life’s joys and sorrows. During her life, Mary spent thousands of hours at a sewing machine, constructing garments for herself and later her daughters. Her passion for all things fibre carried on for years. She gifted her daughters and grandchildren pajamas, fleece tops, hats, slippers, blankets and tablecloths. In later years Mary’s passion was handweaving and watercolour painting. Mary was a lifelong member of CWL. She contributed to the prayer shawl ministry. For many years she volunteered at the hospital gift shop and the humour room. She also contributed her time to the Fibre Arts Society. As the years passed, Mary watched her two daughters grow, learn, move away, marry, and raise children of their own. Joann and Maureen were her pride and joy. Mary adored her grandchildren. Holding them as babies, sharing her time playing games, cooking, baking, painting, attending soccer games and music recitals. Passing on her faith, strong work ethic, artistic talents, and secret recipes, the impact Mary left on her grandchildren’s life remains monumental.
Mary was beloved by all those who knew her. The family wishes to recognize and thank the many dedicated caregivers who supported Mary in her later years.
