KELLY BYAM May 30, 1959 January 8, 2023
It is with heavy hearts and extreme sorrow that the family of Kelly Lee Byam ‘Bimmer’ announce his peaceful passing in Bow Island on Sunday, January 8, 2023, at the age of 63. Kelly will be deeply missed by his loving wife, Karen and his two children, Kaitlyn and Christopher (Sarah). Kelly also leaves behind a brother, Dareld (Starlene) and their children Kayl and Leandra; father-in-law, Walter Krysiak; sister-in-law, Cathy (Jason) Bachmier and their children, Jaylin (Brayden) and Tyler. Kelly also leaves with fond memories of his four-legged companions Max, Koda, Bimmer and Casey, and two grand fur babies, Charlie and Tucker. Kelly was predeceased by his parents, Mervin and Mary Byam; brother, John and mother-in-law, Carol Krysiak. Kelly was born in Bow Island on May 30, 1959. He received his formal education in Bow Island, graduating from Senator Gershaw High School in 1977. He was actively involved in a number of sports including hockey, football, slo-pitch and was a member of the 1981 Canadian silver medal slo-pitch team. Along with his love for sports, he was very musically inclined and taught himself to play the guitar. Kelly played in a local rock and roll band named Rumours. He co-owned a local hardware store for three years, before joining the Bow Island Volunteer Fire Department in 1990. Kelly received his emergency medical response and emergency medical technician training through SAIT in Calgary. In 1995, he became Fire Chief for the Bow Island Fire Department and later became the Emergency Service Coordinator and employed with Alberta Health Services. He retired as fire chief in 2020 due to his illness. On October 7, 2000, Kelly married the love of his life, Karen. Becoming a loving and devoted family, they raised two wonderful children. One of Kelly’s greatest pleasures in life was spending time with his children. He was proud of many things, but nothing can compare to how proud he was of Kaitlyn and Chris and watching them succeed in their sports and academics. No matter how big or small, he was proud of their accomplishments and adored how they have grown up to be respectful adults. Kelly enjoyed being a part of his kids’ lives by coaching them throughout their sports careers. Kelly was very active in the community and devoted many hours with the Volunteer Fire Department/EMS; he was a silent hero to many members of the community. The family would like to extend a heartful thank you to the doctors, nurses and the EMS staff that took care of him during his illness. A Celebration of Kelly’s life will be held at the Bow Island Multiplex, 1040 – 2 Street East, Bow Island, on Sunday, January 29, 2023, at 2:00 p.m. Following the service, food and beverages will be served. SYLVIA AGNES STROM August 30, 1944 ~ January 11, 2023
Sylvia Agnes Strom passed away at the Bow Island Health Centre after a courageous battle with cancer on Wednesday, January 11, 2023, at the age of 78 years. She leaves to cherish her memory: siblings, Elaine Acosta, Phil (Janet) Strom, Ray (Lois) Strom, Joan (James) Babe and Lori (Rick) Dykstra as well as sisters-in-law, Lynn Strom and Laura Kroeker. Sylvia was blessed to have a multitude of nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews whom she loved dearly as well as a large extended family. She was predeceased by her parents, Walter and Gladys Strom; brother, Allen Strom and nieces, Ellen and Amy Strom.
Sylvia was born on August 30, 1944, in the Galt Hospital in Lethbridge, Alberta which is now the Museum. She grew up on a farm south of Burdett and attended Burdett School through her junior high school years. At age fifteen, she left home to attend Prairie High School in Three Hills, Alberta, followed by four years at Prairie Bible Institute.
Sylvia obtained her education degree at the University of Lethbridge with a Math major. She taught at Christiansen Academy in Venezuela, Manyberries School, the Alberta Correspondence School in Edmonton, NorthStar Academy and Cherry Coulee Christian Academy. She was a substitute teacher for Prairie Rose School Division and she also tutored. Sylvia taught adult classes in computer, photography and ESL in Bow Island.
While obtaining her education, she worked at the Alberta School Hospital in Red Deer; on a construction crew, building roads and bridges in Medicine Hat and Lethbridge where she was called on to use her math skills. She also worked for a trailer construction company in Lethbridge. Later, she worked as a receptionist for an Edmonton orthodontist and as the parts person and part-time receptionist for a manufacturing company in Edmonton.
Sylvia loved to travel to interesting places. While living in Venezuela, she toured Columbia, Peru and Ecuador. She made special trips to visit family in Bolivia and Zimbabwe. Sylvia visited friends in New York and France, making a side trip to Rome. Road trips included a trip across Canada and two trips to Texas.
She moved to Bow Island nineteen years ago to be the main care-giver for her aging parents.
Sylvia had many interests: Education, politics, painting, astronomy, photography, sewing, card and jewelry making, theology, piano and shopping. She loved interacting with people and was knowledgeable about many subjects, weighing out both sides of an argument. One of Sylvia’s accomplishments was keeping up her friendship with her penpal for seventy years. She maintained contact with many cousins, friends and students.
Sylvia had a strong faith and hope in her Lord Jesus Christ. At the age of four, she asked Jesus to be her Saviour, which started a relationship that lasted her whole life. As He promised, she now has eternal life with Him.
Sylvia was compassionate, kind and loving. She will be sadly missed by all who knew her.

MONA JESSE June 24, 1943 ~ January 3, 2023 Mrs. Mona Jesse, beloved wife of Jim, passed away peacefully in Victoria, B.C., on Tuesday, January 3, 2023, at the age of 79 years. Along with Jim, Mona leaves to cherish her memory: children, Rani Jesse Wiedemann (Rob), Christopher Jesse (Nuch), Charlene Jesse (Cynthia) and Cheryl Coward (David). She is also survived by five grandchildren, Emely, Aaron, Justin, Nate and Finn; two brothers and three sisters in Trinidad and Tobago as well as numerous extended family in the United States and Trinidad and Tobago. Mona was born in Princes Town, Trinidad and Tobago on June 24, 1943. She immigrated to Canada in 1969, settling in Calgary, Alberta. This is also where Mona and Jim were married in 1975, the beginning of 47 wonderful years together. Her career as an art teacher was truly a labour of love that allowed her to share her gifts for painting and pottery. Over the years, Mona gave of her time to many clubs and organizations, some of which included various book clubs, the Professional Women’s Club and Toastmasters. She had a passion for travel and her many trips worldwide left her with many interesting stories and wonderful memories. Her love of life was evident as people gravitated towards her vibrant and welcoming personality. Mona was a strong woman and a natural leader, using those qualities to build bridges and bring people together. She was very loving and generous to her friends and family. Mona always made time for them, often including them in her hobbies. She enjoyed cooking, Yoga, Qigong and anything to do with the ocean. Mona’s thirst for knowledge and love of learning led her to achieve a BA in Fine Arts and her BEd. The wonderful memories from the day she received her Canadian Citizenship compared only to those of time spent with her family. Mona’s strong faith in God will see her through on her next life’s journey. A Private funeral and burial will take place in the coming week. MARJORY KING-HUNTER
MARJORY KING-HUNTER 1929 ~ 2023 The family of Marjory King-Hunter announce her peaceful passing on Jan. 8, 2023. She shared her final days with her loved ones by her side. Marjory Ethel Van Brunt was born in Hanna, AB, Oct 20, 1929 and grew up in the Sunnynook, AB area. It was at the little Sunnynook school that she met Larry King-Hunter, who many years later would become her best friend and husband of 59 years. They married in 1954 and began a nomadic life following the oil rigs. Their first daughter, Cheryl was born in 1957 and when their second daughter, Shelly was born in 1961, Larry hit the books and trained as a health inspector. With two small children in tow they moved to Hanna. Son, Wesley joined the family in 1964 just as Larry finished building the house they would call “home” for the next 40 years. Marj was kept busy raising their family for the next few years but when everyone was in school, she returned to work, and joined the staff at the Hanna Nursing Home where she enjoyed her time both with the elderly residents and with her coworkers. In 2004, they retired to Medicine Hat to live closer to family. Larry passed in 2014 and Marj eventually moved to Good Samaritans to make a home for herself where she had more help. She made new friendships there with staff members and fellow residents. Marjory was pre-deceased by her mother, Ethel Van Brunt; and by her beloved husband, Larry King-Hunter. Her memory will be cherished by her brother, Jim (Joan) Van Brunt; her children, Cheryl (Ray) Munro, Shelly Longmore, Wes (Eve) King-Hunter; her grandchildren, Joel (Carly) Longmore, Sean (Meghan) Longmore, Marco Longmore, Heather (Mike) Anderson, Taryn (Leighton) Ramsay, Cari (Parker) Munro; her great grandchildren, Cash and Munro Anderson, Bianca, Parks, and Wynter Ramsay; her dearly loved extended family and friends; her lifelong friend, Evie (Evelynn Stifle); as well as half-siblings, Ed and Bev. 1934 ~ DANIEL VERWOERD ~ 2023 Daniel Easter Verwoerd passed away peacefully on Saturday, January 7, 2023 at the age of 88 years. Dan is survived by his daughter, Susan (Ron) Fode; grandson, Brandon Moser; step granddaughter, Kendra (Connor) Robinson; sisters, Carol Rose and Karen (Ralph) Hunter; brothers, Jim (Judy) Verwoerd, Tom (Joanne) Verwoerd and their families; sister-in-law, Karin Verwoerd and family; and cousin, Jan (Wimmy) Verwoerd of Amsterdam. He was predeceased by his wife, Louise; son, Dale; father, Dick; step-mother, Della; mother Nellie Berry; step- father, Milton ‘Slim” Berry; brother, Jack Verwoerd; and brother-in-law, Bob Rose. Dan was born June 26, 1934 in Lethbridge, AB. He attended Central Grade School and Lethbridge Collegiate Institude High School (LCI) until 1951. He then went to work for his dad on a Bridge Crew as a Pile Drive Operator in Piapot, SK for over two years. His next job was at Archibald Motors in Lethbridge where a customer recognized his work ethic and wanted him to join their company. He started his career with Jordan’s Carpets Ltd. In 1955. He married Louise Bishop, August 18, 1956 and they welcomed their son Dale on June 24, 1961. He continued to work in the Lethbridge store until 1963 when he was given the opportunity to be an area representative in Medicine Hat and run the business out of his home. They made the move and on March 30, 1964 their daughter Susan was born. Dan was a certified Journeyman Flooring Mechanic for 38 years until his retirement in June of 1993 at the age of 59. Up until the last few years he could remember his customers names, addresses, the carpet and the square footage of the job Amazing! He was an honest, reliable, hard working, learned man, a perfectionist, whether it was carpentry or any household renovation, there wasn’t a job that he couldn’t handle. His pride and passion was his meticulously manicured vegetable garden. Creating a square foot design of his own with every row perfectly measured and spaced within each square, and not a weed to be found. The reward was harvesting the fruits of his labour. There was one year he boasted about having five – 5 gallon pails of carrots. Pretty sure that was the year Susan’s friend turned orange! Dad loved to BBQ, as soon as spring came around. He didn’t use a fancy gas or propane one, he was adamant on using charcoal brickettes in his Hibachi. We used to poke fun about his OCD, from writing his meals on a calendar, to counting out 40 Mini Wheats for his breakfast every day, to writing down the time the mail was delivered and finally wanting his glass of chocolate milk moved over an inch on his table. His stubborn sense of independence will be sadly missed. Due to health reasons he was admitted into Valleyview, assisted living in October of 2020. October of 2021 he was moved into long term care where he resided until his passing. A heartfelt thank you to the wonderful caregivers at Valleyview who were so supportive, respectful and caring. Eileen Cowtan was a caring mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend. She passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by loved ones, on January 11th at the age of 78. Eileen is lovingly remembered by her children, Tara (Alan, Monica, Matthew), David, and Michael (Zea); brother, Jim (Audrey); sister, Betty (Peg); as well as their families and former spouse, Ted. Eileen enjoyed a remarkable group of friends, and her neighbours were a constant source of companionship and joy. Eileen was born to Edwin Cockerline and Viola Cockerline (Hagyard) on April 12, 1944. She taught in Winnipeg before moving to Medicine Hat in 1977, where she later retired as an instructor at the Medicine Hat College. She was active in the community having volunteered with Girl Guides, Police Point Park, Grasslands Naturalists, The Esplanade, and Meals on Wheels. No one appreciated peanut butter as much as Eileen, and on more than a few occasions it became a meal. Eileen travelled extensively, sometimes to the point her family had no idea where in the world she was. One time she returned to Canada with nothing but her swimsuit as the ship had blown up while she was snorkeling! When not in a swimsuit, she could more often than not be found in a striped top. She loved outdoor adventures and would often camp with her friends and family while sleeping in the back of Gus, her trusty minivan. Eileen treasured her Manitoba roots and always looked forward to going back to Pilot Mound. She will return home one last time to be buried at a later date. Marilyn Jeanine Corbett , beloved wife of the late Herb Corbett passed away Friday, January 13th, 2023 at the age of 91 years. She leaves behind to cherish her memory her children, Rusty (Sandra) Corbett, Kandee Corbett, Tracey (Keith) Jangula; ten grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren; sister, Ann Bosley; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. THERESA DOLA 1926 – 2023
Theresa Marie Aurore Dola (nee Charest) of Medicine Hat, died peacefully in her sleep on January 9, 2023, at the age of 96 years, at the Wellington Retirement Residence in Medicine Hat. Our mom was born January 28, 1926, in Edmonton, Alberta, and was predeceased by her parents, William and Maire-Emma (Goudreau) Charest, of Beaumont, Alberta, and her late husband, William (Bill) Dola of 70 years, from Prelate, Saskatchewan. Theresa was the last and the youngest of fourteen children, all raised in Beaumont, Alberta.
Theresa (also known as “Terry” by family and friends) will be remembered for her cooking, gardening, knitting, and witty sense of humor.
She is survived by her children: Wayne (Nadine) Dola of Medicine Hat, Brian (Trish) Dola of Edmonton, Brenda Dola of Sylvan Lake, Darlene Dola of Medicine Hat, Cynthia Kennedy of Calgary and Darren (Deanna) Dola of Medicine Hat. Theresa is also survived by twelve grandchildren; thirteen great grandchildren; and one great-great grandchild.
As per wishes of her family, there will be a private service on January 14, 2023, at the PATTISON FUNERAL HOME with Life Celebrant Pat Grisonich. The service will be streamed and available for viewing by the public on our website on Monday. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Alzheimer’s Society of Canada.
