1931 ~ J. ARCHIE SZABO ~ 2022
The family of Archie Szabo sadly announces his passing on December 10, 2022 with his family by his side. He leaves to cherish his memory his wife of 59 years, Eva Szabo; daughter, Shirley Szabo (Bob); son, Darrel Szabo (Linda); sister, Margaret Berringer; and extended family. He was predeceased by his parents, Steve and Helen; sister, Helen (Steve) Balog; and brother, Steve (Audrey) Szabo. Archie was born in Fareham, Alberta on September 21, 1931. He moved to Saskatchewan, settling in Hoosier in 1956 and working in the oil and gas field accompanied by his various faithful dogs. He married Eva Ward on April 27, 1963. He continued in the oilfield until his retirement in 1990 and moved to Medicine Hat. His active lifestyle included golfing, bowling, woodwork, gardening, volunteer work for numerous community events and projects, as well as camping, welcoming any friends and family (new and old) at various lakes. He also came up with various designs for traps, racks for bikes, wiener sticks, and many more. In later years, touring the community on his peddle bike and playing pool at a community centre. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to your local SPCA. Celebration of life arrangements will be announced when completed by

THERESA ANNE SCHMUNK
THERESA ANNE SCHMUNK It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Theresa Schmunk. Theresa passed away peacefully on Monday, December 12, 2022, at the age of 97 years. She was predeceased by her beloved husband Otto; her parents, Thomas and Mary Fitzgerald; her brothers, Frank, James and Bernard Fitzgerald; her sisters, Ella Bidwell, Kathleen Marchand and Eileen Fitzgerald; her daughter-in-law, Susan Schmunk and her grandson Danny Schmunk. Left to cherish her memory are their five children: Pat (Donna), Terry (Alicia), Brian, Robert (Sheila-Rae) and Mary Lou (Rod) along with their seven grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren as well as Theresa’s brother, Len.
Theresa born in Rosetown, Saskatchewan on November 26, 1925, and was the seventh of eight children. There were four boys and four girls: Ella Bidwell, Frank Fitzgerald, James Fitzgerald, Kathleen Marchand, Bernard Fitzgerald, Len Fitzgerald, Theresa, and Eileen Fitzgerald. Her best friend was Ella growing up, who was also like a mother to Theresa.
Theresa graduated high school in 1945 from St. Joe’s Convent. She then entered St. Paul’s school of nursing 1946 in Saskatoon, for three years of full scope nursing. Theresa nursed at various country hospitals including Prelate, Eston, and St. Michael’s in Lethbridge working in pediatrics.
While Theresa worked at the Prelate hospital, she attended a mascaraed dance with her best friend Sophie, where she met Otto Schmunk. Theresa then moved to Lethbridge to work at St. Michael’s in pediatrics. Otto followed and proposed in 1949. She married the love of her life on November 19, 1951, in Rosetown, Saskatchewan. They then moved to Leader, Saskatchewan. One year later Patrick was born, followed by Terry, Brian, Robert and finally a girl, Mary Lou.
Life was busy but Theresa still found time to volunteer with the CWL, RCIA, Legion of Mary, visiting shut in’s as well as participating as a Eucharistic Minister and serving on Parish Communal.
In 1986, Theresa and Otto traveled to Southern Texas and purchased a small piece of paradise. They enjoyed family and friends that they met there, often playing cards, with Theresa winning 99% of all the card games played.

Vigil Prayers will be recited at Cook Southland Funeral Chapel, 901 – 13 Street S.W., Medicine Hat on Wednesday, December 14, 2022, at 7:00 p.m. The Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Patrick’s Roman Catholic Church, 238 – 2 Avenue N.E. Medicine Hat on Thursday, December 15, 2022, at 10:00 a.m. with Father Roque Pereira celebrant. A time of fellowship will follow immediately thereafter in the St. Patrick’s Parish Hall. Margaret Cyr of Medicine Hat passed away on Monday, December 5, 2022 at the age of 89 years, beloved wife of the late George Cyr. She leaves to cherish her memory three children, Betty Anne (Rick) Eisler, Wayne Cyr (Cindi) and Shauna Cyr (Lonnie); four grandchildren, Shannon Ericksen, Tanya (Tim) Erickson, Lisa (Chad) Hartley and Ashley Fritzler (her father Calvin Fritzler); eight great grandchildren; three sisters, Avelina Rose, Gert Albright and Alice (Melvin) Webster. She was predeceased by her parents Henry and Sarah Dyck; two sons, David and John; three siblings in infancy, Hattie, George and Peter; one grandson Travis Fritzler; her siblings, Henry, Dave, Annie, Rose, Nettie and Suzie. Margaret was born on November 10, 1933 in Gouldtown, Saskatchewan, the fourth oldest of twelve children. She married George Cyr on August 4, 1951 in Brooks. Margaret was a hardworking lady and was very fussy about everything. She loved her family, music and dancing. Her sisters and brothers were all musical and when they were younger they got together most weekends to enjoy their music. Margaret loved to shop and looked forward to getting out for her shopping and dinner dates. Leonard “Len” Schwabe of Medicine Hat passed away on Friday, December 9, 2022 at the age of 91 years, beloved husband of the late Lorraine Schwabe. He leaves to cherish his memory three children, Lorraine Mary Louise “Lou” Haag, Leonard Benjamin Sidney “Sid” Schwabe (Tracy Laubenstein), and Rhonoda Lee “Ronnie” Melnyczuk; six grandchildren, Lindsey (Lonnie) Gebhart, Nikki (Denny) O’Connor, A.J. Schwabe, Melory (Matty) Byers, Megan Melnyczuk (Greg Heukshorst), and Wasyl Melnyczuk; nine great-grandchildren as well as numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, Fred and Mary Schwabe; and two sons-in-law, Dennis Haag and Taras Melnyczuk. Funeral arrangements will be announced in the spring of 2023. JAMES STEELE 1947 – 2022
James Steele of Red Deer, passed away on Sunday, December 4, 2022 at the age of 75 years. He will be greatly missed by his coordinator Karen, roommates Diane and Jeffrey and his neighbor and friend Rena. James was born on September 18, 1947 in Medicine Hat, Alberta to Fred and Doreen Steele and a brother of Judy and Jack. He relocated to Red Deer and lived there with a zest for life, a great sense of humour and a passion for salty snacks and Lindor chocolates. James had a keen memory for birthdays and dates of his workers and friends. He also collected coins of many different varieties and once he knew the birth year of any of those same workers and friends, he would give them a coin with that year on it, once he acquired it. James loved collecting playing cards and would always want to purchase a new deck with different images on them such as flowers, giving him the nickname of “king of hearts”. He would study his new deck in depth. Telling jokes, his great sense of humour and his ability to come up with nicknames for those around him made James just fun to be with. He will be missed. The graveside service will be held at Hillside Cemetery on Friday, December 16, 2022 at 2:30 p.m. with Life Celebrant Pat Grisonich officiating. ALICE KROHN 1928 – 2022 Alice Winnie Krohn of Medicine Hat, passed away on Wednesday, December 7, 2022 at the age of 94 years. She leaves to cherish her memory her sons, Everett Krohn ( Eliza) of Vancouver; grandson Cord Krohn of Hong Kong; Todd Krohn (Sue) of League City, Texas; granddaughter Kristin Butterfras (Neil), great grand daughters Grace, Hope and Logyn, great grandson Nelson of Cypress, Texas; granddaughter Cherish Krohn (Kevin Long) of New Orleans, Louisiana; sisters-in-law, Tina Moffit Newberg, Oregon, Donna Mott, Ontario, Joyce Quast, Medicine Hat, Gladys Quast, Medicine Hat as well as numerous nieces and nephews in B.C. Alberta, Saskatchewan, Ontario and Oregon. She was predeceased by her husband Larry in December of 1992; her parents Dan and Rose Quast; her siblings: sister, Hazel Ellik, brothers, Harry Quast, Raymond Quast and Tom Quast.
Alice Winnie (Quast) Krohn was born October 22, 1928, in Schuler Alberta, attending school in Schuler and Medicine Hat. On October 22, 1948, she married Lawrence “Larry” Krohn. Alice began her employment with Dominion Glass and later became a realtor in Medicine Hat for many years.

TED GRIMM 1936 – 2022
Theodore (Ted) John Grimm, born August 16, 1936 died December 10th, 2022 surrounded by his family. Ted leaves behind Ruth (nee Light) his loving wife and companion of 64 years. Ted is survived by his four children, Lynda (Lane) Lindsay, Doug Grimm, Maureen (Darren) Roberts, and Michelle (Darcy) Haaf. Ted found great joy with his five grandkids, Sarah (Clancy) Sederberg, Larissa Lindsay, Megan Grimm, David Haaf and fiancé Tori Johnson, Logan Lindsay, as well as a great granddaughter, Josie Sederberg. Ted leaves behind his siblings and their families Gladys Payne, Don (Laurene) Grimm, Gary (Joan) Grimm, and Glen (Vanda Weldon) Grimm. Numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, aunts and uncles will mourn Ted’s passing.
Ted was predeceased by his parents Anton and Bregitta Grimm, Ruth’s parents Gustave and Paulina Licht (Light), as well as Ruth’s siblings and spouses, Erma and Ralph Jonasson, Henry (Hank) Light, Elizabeth (Bette) and James Finzel, George and Pearl Light, Mae and Joseph Rakai, Erna and Al Wenzel.
Ted was born to Anton and Bregitta Grimm on a farm in the RM of Happyland, Saskatchewan. His early education began in a rural one-room school, later at Fox Valley High School then at Campion College in Regina. Ted finished his studies at the University of Calgary from 1962 64 and completed B.Ed. studies through summer sessions and off campus classes in 1966. Ted worked as a surveyor on the Trans-Canada Highway in Saskatchewan from 1953 1956. He then worked at Northwest Nitro Chemicals in the technical division and in operations from 1956 1962. During this time Ted completed his degree and went on to teach English and Social Studies at St. Mary’s and McCoy High School. Ted was an educator from 1964 1977. Ted also served as Alderman or Mayor on Medicine Hat City Council (1968 2001) for all but three years, during which he worked as a real estate agent. Ted retired in 2001.
Ted coached the girl’s high school basketball team during his tenure at McCoy High School and enjoyed a round of golf with friends. Ted’s favorite sport was baseball. His philosophical mentor was Tommy Douglas. He had a love of reading and writing and read at a minimum one book a week, mainly non-fiction, biography, history or philosophy. Ted was well versed on the various ethnic immigration settlements in Western Canada, especially the Germans from Russia.
Ted’s first love was family. Despite not being overly demonstrative, he was always well connected with and knowledgeable about his extended family. There were very few school functions or sports events involving his grandchildren that he did not attend, often traveling hundreds of miles to see them in competition. Ruth, his children and grandchildren were his pride and joy.
Ted’s community values were influenced by the Sermon on the Mount, humanism and social democracy. He tried to live by the motto: “Feed the light and starve the beast”. Ted often said that the two most important contributors to a happy life are a loving and supportive spouse and a satisfying job…and he had both.

Alice Diane Holick, beloved wife of the late Stan Holick, passed away peacefully at the Medicine Hat Regional Hospital on Sunday December 11, 2022, at the age of 79 years. Alice leaves to cherish her memory: daughter, Debbie Holick (Marcel); son, Terry (Heather) Holick; son-in-law, Chester Wisnowski; grandchildren, Brooklyn Wilk, Arianna Wilk, Jessica Wisnowski and Ethan Holick. Alice is also survived by her brother, Bill (Marg) Montgomery as well as numerous other extended family and many friends. Along with her husband, Stan, she was predeceased by her parents, Fred and Margaret; daughter, Bonnie as well as her sister, Barb. Alice was born on April 25, 1964 in Peterborough, ON. Her hobbies included Diamond Dots, crossword puzzles, playing games at Meadowlands (where she always seemed to win) as well as camping. She was a member of the Medicine Hat Moose Lodge and had a strong Catholic faith. Throughout her lifetime, getting married to Stan, seeing her three children grow up as well as being a Grandma to her four grandchildren were her most memorable occasions. She will be deeply missed! The Funeral Service celebrating Alice’s life will be held at Cook Southland Funeral Chapel, 901 – 13 Street S.W., Medicine Hat on Friday, December 16, 2022, at 11:00 a.m. with Father Iqbal Khurshid officiating. A Private Interment will follow at Hillside Cemetery with a time of fellowship to follow thereafter in the Cook Southland Reception Facility.
