JEROME`JERRY’HAGERJUNE2,1931

JEROME ‘JERRY’ HAGER June 2, 1931 ~ November 20, 2022
It is with great sadness that the family of Jerry Hager announce his passing on Sunday, November 20, 2022, at the age of 91 years. Left to cherish Jerry’s memory are his wife, Katherine (Kay) Lesmeister; ten children: Barry (Joyce) Hager, Julie Stemmann, Trish (Jim) Hirsekorn, Dan (Michele) Hager, Eve (Dave) Lantz, Rose (Dan) Cowan, Rita Hager (Jerry Edwards), Bonnie (Bernie) Cook, Laurie (Darby) Gagnon and Trina (Mike) Kobley; numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren; sister, Caroline Knapik as well as numerous nieces and nephews. He is also survived by Kay’s children: Linda (Bob) Crockford, Marlene Conibear, Janet Wiebe and Laurie Lesmeister as well as their children and grandchildren. Jerry was predeceased by his first wife, Mary Herlein; son, Kelly; son-in-law, Dieter Stemmann; great-granddaughter, Lauren Stemmann; siblings, Edward, Albert, Pete, Nick, Kay Read; parents, Michael and Marianna, and Kay’s son, Clint and son-in-law, Jim Coniber. Jerry was born at the family home above the store in Compeer, Alberta on June 2, 1931 and was the youngest of seven children. He started school in Compeer and completed his education in Edmonton. Jerry worked at the family store, garage, on the farm, and was an owner/ operator of various businesses. One of his most gratifying accomplishments was the starting of the engine for the power plant in Compeer. He also indentured in the electrical trade at the age of 45. Jerry married Maria Herlein on July 10, 1951, in Compeer, and together, they raised eleven children, ran the general store, and farmed until they retired to Medicine Hat in 1981. He was an avid carpenter and electrician, was actively involved with the church and community, and was instrumental in building the Compeer Arena and the addition to the Community Hall. Jerry generously volunteered his time and talents to family, friends and the community. He was a sports enthusiast who enjoyed hockey, baseball, curling, golfing, playing cards, music and dancing, as well as being “king” of the remote. Jerry was a jack of all trades and was known as “Papa Saw” by his children, who each have been blessed with a treasured legacy of craftmanship and love. Retirement days in Medicine Hat were never dull as Jerry continued with helping on the farm, renovations, carpentry work, and also enjoyed travelling with his siblings. He married Kay in 2001 and together they shared their love and companionship with their extended families, friends and all who were dear to them. Despite his deteriorating health, Jerry maintained his sense of humour, and often had the staff at The Wellington smiling; when they would ask “How are you feeling today Jerry”, Jerry would simply reply, “With my fingers”, a joke he shared with his sisters. Jerry will be sadly missed, lovingly remembered, and etched in his family’s hearts forever and always. The family would like to extend their sincere appreciation to the staff at The Wellington and St. Joseph’s Hospice for their kindness, care and compassion Jerry re
ceived during his stay.
Those we love remain with us, for love itself lives on. And cherished memories never fade, because a loved one’s gone. Those we love can never be, more than a thought apart. For as long as there is memory, they’ll live on in the heart.

KATIE WIEBE

KATIE WIEBE April 15, 1926 ~ November 23, 2022
Mrs. Katie Wiebe of Medicine Hat, gently and peacefully passed into the arms of Jesus at the South Country Village in Medicine Hat on Wednesday, November 22, 2022, at the age of 96 years. Katie longed to see Jesus for a very long time and now she is with Him in glory. She was born to Henry and Agnes Wieler on April 15, 1926, in Orenburg, Russia and shortly thereafter, her family immigrated to Canada. In 1947, Katie married John Wiebe and as they began their family, they were committed to provide a Christian home where Christ was always the center. John and Katie successfully owned K and W Bakery in Taber, Alberta, where their famous pastries quickly became a hit. After many years of baking, they decided to settle down in Medicine Hat. Katie was a delight to everyone with her beautiful smile and her helping hand to anyone in need. Grandma Katie is adored by her many grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. She will lovingly be remembered always by her three girls: Shirley Dixon, Myrna Blodgett, and Frances Friesen. She was predeceased by her husband, John Wiebe; first great-granddaughter, Mary Spurlock and first grandson, Wayne Dixon. We look forward to a grand reunion in heaven! Although Katie’s memory faded near the end, the memory of her Savior was always present. God’s Word was hidden in her heart and a smile was always on her face when she heard her favorite hymns being sung. One of her favorites was, “I Am Going to a City Where the Roses Never Fade.” Many thanks to all of the staff at Sunnyside Home, who so kindly cared for Katie in her last years. A Graveside Service will take place at Hillside Cemetery on Monday, November 28, 2022, at 3:00 p.m. with Pastor Murray Jaster officiating. He was predeceased by his parents, Matthias and Barbara Hellman; two daughters in infancy; his great-grandson, Kasen Obritsch; his brothers and sisters: Cecilia (Emanuel) Loran, Nick (Theresa) Hellman, Matt (Selma) Hellman, Betty (Pat) Mooney, Clare (Joe) Redmond, Barbara (George) Peters, Anna Hellman, Jack (Lillian) (Rachel) Hellman, Josephine (George) Klein, Fr. Jerome “Harry” Hellman, Vanny Hellman and other family members and relatives on the Folk side.
Dad was born on November 9, 1925, on the Hellman family homestead north of Richmound. He grew up there, the third youngest of 12 children. In 1952 he married Julia Folk. Except for a short period of time working at a greenhouse and Dominion Glass in Redcliff, farming was his life until his retirement in 2004. In 1984, when Steve took over the farm, Dad moved into Richmound but continued to be involved in the farming operations. Even after his retirement, that love of farming was still in his blood, and he made regular trips out to see how the crops were doing.
Faith, Family, Farming, Flowers, Fishing, Friends, curling, and birds, (including the Toronto Blue Jays), were important to Dad. He was a devout member of St. Mary’s Church. In addition to being a member of the congregation all his life, he was also a sacristan, and for many years he would walk, and in later years drive, to the church to ring the bell before Sunday mass. Except for this past summer, Dad was always an enthusiastic participant in our Hellman Family Camping weekend and any special event celebrations. He enjoyed attending the birthdays, First Communions, and Graduations, of his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Anyone who has been to Dad’s house in the summer will have seen his love of flowers in his lush flowerbeds, and of course, the marigolds he planted every year in his garden. Dad was an avid fisherman for years and spent many happy hours with a fishing rod in his hands and the sun shining down on him. His crowning achievement was landing The Big One: a 15.5-pound walleye, measuring around 34 inches long. This was mounted and proudly displayed in his house in Richmound and later in his suite in Medicine Hat. I guess that was Dad’s proof that this wasn’t just a fish story. When it became difficult for Dad to go fishing on his own, you could often find him relaxing in the beauty and peacefulness of his backyard. He liked to say he was soaking the sun into his bones to help him make it through the winter. Part of his pleasure in the backyard came from observing the many birds that visited, knowing there would always be food for them in the feeders. Any time we wanted to know what kind of bird we were seeing or hearing, we had to just ask Dad. Of course, he was also pretty fond of another type of bird–his Toronto Blue Jays. If there was a game on, Dad was watching! For many years, Dad was the caretaker at the curling rink, making daily treks during curling season to check that the compressor was running and the ice temperature perfect. His neighbours and friends were so kind and helpful to him especially in later years. From raking his leaves, to cutting his grass, shoveling his sidewalks, picking up groceries, and doing wellness checks, they looked out for him like he was family. There were regulars who dropped in for visits, or to watch the Blue Jays or curling. They all meant the world to Dad and were so appreciated by him and by all of us.
Those who wish to pay their respects may do so at St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church in Richmound, Saskatchewan on Wednesday evening November 30, 2022 from 6:00 – 7:00 p.m. (CST). Family and friends will then gather for prayers at 7:00 p.m (CST). The funeral mass will be celebrated in Richmound at St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church on Thursday, December 1, 2022 at 11:00 a.m. (CST) with Fr. Francis Appiah-Kubi celebrant. A private family interment will follow in St. Mary’s Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church, Richmound, Saskatchewan, or to the Richmound Lions Club. The family has requested that attendees wear masks to protect our immuno-compromised and vulnerable family members who will be in attendance. A video of the Funeral Mass will be available online in the coming days following the funeral. Please visit http://www.pattisonfuneralhome.com/obituary/William-Hellman to view the video or leave a message of condolence.
