It is with sadness that the family of Herold Knodel announce his passing at the Medicine Hat Regional Hospital on Thursday, November 17, 2022, at the age of 98 years. Herold was predeceased by his wife of 57 years, Violet; parents, August and Karoline Knodel; mother-in-law and father-in-law, Alice and Barnabus Blackburn; two brothers, Herbert and Milbert; four sisters, Martha, Meta, Ida and Hertha; five sisters-in-law; eight brothers-in-law as well as two nieces and five nephews. He is survived by a number of nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, great-great-nieces and great-great-nephews. Herold was born at Schuler, Alberta and attended a rural school called Livona. He was forced to leave school in his early teens because of severe bouts of rheumatic fever. In 1947, Herold married his long-time sweetheart, Violet Blackburn and together they settled in Brooks. It was there that Herold became involved in the construction trade and completed a five year apprenticeship program with Jacobson Construction. Shortly thereafter, Herold and Violet moved to Medicine Hat and built their home. Herold then went back to work with Johnson Construction; a temporary position which ended up lasting 20 years. After Johnson Construction was sold, Herold struck out on his own and started a construction and renovation business which was very successful, keeping him busy for the next 15 years until his retirement. Herold and Violet loved to travel, camp, fish, golf and square and round dance, which they did for 40 years. A Private family interment will take place at Hillside Cemetery in the coming days. Relatives and friends will be invited to gather for a celebration of Herold’s life in the spring of 2023, with further information to be announced during the days leading up to the service.
