1957 – DON SCHMIDT – 2022 Donald “Don” William Schmidt of Medicine Hat passed away Tuesday, Sept. 6, 2022, at the age of 64. He is survived by one brother, Larry Schmidt (Olga, sons Paul [Betsy, daughter Millie] and Mark [Shauna]); two sisters-in-law, Carol Schmidt and son Terry, Joyce Schmidt and son Stephen Fox (Laura); as well as niece Kellie Smith (Brent, children Brooke Beierbach [Avi], Noah and Matthew) and nephew Scott Schmidt (Lori, son Truman). Don was predeceased by two brothers, Ron and Gerry, and by his parents Olga and Frank Schmidt. Born and raised in Regina, Don was the youngest of four brothers. The boys all shared a passion for cars — apparent throughout their lives — but Don’s true love was in the theatre. Blessed with an undeniable charisma perfect for acting, and a booming singing voice, he spent decades dedicated to the stage. He achieved his biggest dream when asked to perform his one-man play “The Book of Ruth” Off-Broadway at the 2004 New York International Fringe Festival. In his later years, Don spent an abundance of time in Medicine Hat visiting Kellie and Scott and their families, growing immensely close with his great-nephews Noah and Matthew and loving nothing more than a day gone fishing followed by a Roughrider game with his loved ones. ARDIS ANN HAUPT October 12, 1935 ~ September 6, 2022 Ardis Ann Haupt, beloved wife of the late Johnny Haupt, passed away at the Good Samaritan South Ridge Village in Medicine Hat on Tuesday, September 6, 2022, at the age of 86 years. Ardis was born on October 12, 1935, in Maple Creek, Saskatchewan to Edith and Henry Borman. She was the youngest of four children and grew up on the family farm in the Skull Creek district. Ardis attended school in Skull Creek, Maple Creek and did some of her schooling through correspondence. Later on, she furthered her education in Calgary becoming a lab technician. She worked for a short time in Prince Albert and then in Medicine Hat until 1973. Ardis met her sweetheart, Johnny Haupt, at Beef Club Achievement Day and they were married in December 1957 at St. Mary’s Anglican Church in Maple Creek, having their dance at Star Butte School. They lived at the Haupt farm in the Star Butte district for a short time and then moved to Medicine Hat where they bought a house on Ross Street. In 1961, they bought their farm near Seven Persons, on the open prairie with the creek running threw it. They worked very hard to establish this farm and Ardis took great pride in her home, yard and the many trees she planted. She always loved working in her yard. In 1967, they welcomed a son, Steven and in 1968, a daughter, Stephanie. Ardis was a wonderful and devoted wife, mother, mother-in-law and grandmother and was a talented seamstress, making quilts and clothing for her grandchildren; these things will be cherished forever. Ardis was kind, patient and gentle and her grandchildren loved to spend time with her. In 2013, with health issues looming, Ardis and Johnny moved to Medicine Hat and returned to the farm for two summers until they could no longer live there independently. Ardis was a resident of the Good Samaritan Village for the past five years and the staff there became like family. Ardis’ family will forever be grateful for the love and compassion they showed them. Ardis is survived by her children: son, Steve (Tracy) and their children Paige (Jayson) and Cody; daughter, Stephanie (Jim) and their children Tiffany, Samantha (Brandon) and their boys, Cole and Tyson as well as numerous nieces, nephews and special friends. She was predeceased by John in 2020, and the family takes comfort in knowing they are together again holding hands. ‘Rest peacefully mom, you will forever be in our hearts!’ A private family gathering will be held at a later date. HENRY MONROE (BUD) SYVERSON 1934-2022 It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Henry (Bud) Syverson on Sept.11 2022 in Medicine Hat, AB. Bud was born in Medicine Hat and lived most of his life in the city he loved. Bud was predeceased by his mother Dorothy (Becker) Syverson and his father Henry (Doc) Syverson, as well as his brother Gary Syverson. He will always be remembered by his loving wife Micheline (Prescott) Syverson, sister-in-law Donna Syverson, two sons Dean and Joey, and one daughter Tobie Syverson (Geno). He also leaves to mourn his beloved grandchildren Cleo and Jack Syverson, Alysa Pederson (Donovan), Shea and Kale Syverson, and Krystal Dyson (Jo). Bud started work at a young age and continued to work into his 70’s. He worked at Northwest Nitro Chemicals in the Hat, the Medicine Hat News in its original location, and the Finnie Tire Shop. He was also involved in business ownership and management of the Ranchmen Motel and Park Lane Hotel. In semi-retirement he spent many years as manager of the Crestwood Mobile Home Park and completed his work career as a school bus driver. An accomplished athlete in many sports, Bud will forever be remembered for his great love of hockey. He began the sport at a young age and excelled at every level. He played his junior career with the Medicine Hat Tigers, went on to play minor league professional hockey with several Canadian and American teams, senior hockey in both Medicine Hat and Drumheller, AB and retired after many fun-filled years of old-timer hockey in Medicine Hat. He also worked as a linesman in the WHL throughout the 70’s and received his fair share of bumps and bruises. Always a devoted husband, father and friend, Bud will always be remembered for his kindness, generosity, acceptance of others, strong work ethic, meticulous bookkeeping, and numerous other positive character traits. Bud always cherished time with family and friends and was always happy to visit with and accommodate family and friends from near and afar. Bud will be greatly missed by those who knew and loved him dearly! We would love to invite family and friends to a warm gathering to celebrate Bud’s life and share stories. 1937 – MAXINE JOY STOCKBURGER (Nobbs) – 2022 Maxine Joy Stockburger of Medicine Hat, beloved wife of the late Harvey Stockburger, passed away on Sunday, September 11th, 2022 at the age of 85 years. She was a loving, kind and sweet dear lady. Maxine was born August 5th, 1937, at Eston, Saskatchewan to Thomas and Florence Nobbs. She was raised in Portreeve, Saskatchewan, along with her beloved brother, Laverne and sister, Valerie. Maxine had strength and determination. Despite losing her sister to polio and her mother to cancer while still a teenager, she and her cousin, Joan Mattice, moved to Medicine Hat to further their education and become Registered Nurses together. Maxine loved being a RN and she worked at Riverview nursing home for 30 years before retiring; she then spent her final two months there, with loving staff, some of whom remembered working with her. She was a fantastic and caring nurse, wife and mother. Maxine valued family above all else and her children and grandchildren were her greatest treasures. In 1959, she married the love of her life, Harvey Stockburger, and together they raised four children. They all traveled in a motorhome throughout BC, down to California, across the USA and Canada, coast to coast. These were great adventures. Harvey and Maxine also went to Barbados, St. Louis, Nashville, Arizona, Florida, as well as Australia to visit their son, Darren and his family. When Harvey passed in 2000, she continued traveling with her children and their families. Maxine loved animals and cared for many pets throughout her life including a goat, cats, dogs, guinea pigs, rabbits, fish, and a budgie. She was hardworking and crafty. She sewed matching outfits for her little girls, was involved with Pioneer Girls, did macrame, crochet, knitting and cross stitch. For over 40 years she and a few ladies from the old neighborhood met for coffee almost every week. After retiring, she joined the fun group of ladies known as the Crown Jewels and had many good times and laughs with them. In Maxine’s last years she suffered with dementia, but even through that she remained loving, grateful and able to see the beauty in the world. She loved to go for drives and always remarked on the beautiful clouds, trees, water, deer, and the children playing. All the beauty that Medicine Hat offers was appreciated by Maxine. She saw the best in people. She had a strong faith in God from an early age and that carried her throughout her life. Left to cherish memories of Maxine are her children, Rhonda Stockburger (Randy Aitken) and children, Savannah, Matthew, and Mitchell of Winnipeg, MB; Laurie Straube (Ralph) Kalina and children, Travis and Shaylee of Medicine Hat; Dena Stockburger (John Acorn) and children, Jesse and Benny of Edmonton, AB; and Darren Stockburger (Louise) and children, Madison and Jasmine of Adelaide, Australia. The family sends heartfelt thanks to Extended Family Services who provided patient and loving one-on-one companionship for mom during her most difficult times. Also, thank you to the staff at Riverview Age Care and to the many compassionate people who cared for Maxine. As mom wished, there will be no formal funeral service. A private family interment will take place on Friday, September 16, 2022, at Hillside Cemetery. TROY KOENIG March 5, 1964 ~ September 11, 2022 It is with great sadness that the family of Troy Darren Koenig, announce his sudden passing in Medicine Hat on Sunday, September 11, 2022, at the age of 58 years. Troy will be deeply missed by his parents, Vern and Evelyn Koenig; brothers, Rick of Cochrane and Trent of Medicine Hat as well as his two loving children, Aaron of Brandon, MB., and Ashley of Edmonton. He was predeceased by his grandparents, John and Nathalia ‘Dolly’ Koenig and Michael and Pauline Rath. Troy was born and raised in Medicine Hat. In his early years, he enjoyed family trips to Yellowstone and Jasper as well as numerous trips to Vancouver Island and Disneyland. Troy also enjoyed camping, fishing, golfing and playing pool with friends and family. He had a sense of humour, loved to joke and was known in town as a reputable painter “The Best Painter Around’ (Those are his own words). “May your pain finally be gone; we will miss you.
