MYRNA ELIZABETH IRONSIDE

1951 ~ 2022
It is with great sadness that we announce the sudden passing of Myrna Ironside on May 22nd, 2022. She is survived by her soul mate, husband, Derrick; sister, Mabel (Murray) Pike of Red Deer; cousins, nieces and nephews; godchildren; Derrick's family; as well as countless friends. There is comfort in knowing that she is reunited with her beloved, talented daughter, Megan; her parents, John and Louise Pickering; and her brother, David Pickering. Myrna was born May 29, 1951, she grew up in the Red Deer area, graduating high school in 1969 and the University of Alberta in 1972. In her first year of university, (although they knew each other before) Myrna and Derrick started dating. They were married June 3rd, 1972 and that same year they relocated to Likoma Island, Malawi, East Africa to teach for two years. This adventure was their catalyst to travel, somewhere near 50 countries around the world. Upon returning to Canada, and following a stint in Red Deer, they settled in Medicine Hat. Myrna returned to university (University of Lethbridge) to attain her education degree and was employed by the Medicine Hat Separate School Division until her retirement. Their daughter, Megan, was born shortly after graduation and Myrna's world revolved around her and teaching. Besides teaching and being a phenomenal mom, Myrna loved singing in St. Mary's Choir, Musical Theatre and Firehall Theatre. She performed in numerous plays, and also directed many, often with Megan in them. Myrna may have been small in stature but she was a giant in energy—building self-esteem and creativity. In 2008, the sudden passing of her dear Megan took its toll. Myrna continued to participate in theatre and to travel; but her natural vim and vigour was gone. A Celebration of Myrna’s life will be held at SAAMIS MEMORIAL FUNERAL CHAPEL, #1 Dunmore Road SE, Medicine Hat, Alberta on June 10, 2022 at 1:00 pm with Pastor Shane Hein officiating. Those wishing to remember Myrna may donate to The Canadian Diabetes Association, 1400-522 University Avenue, Ontario, M5G 2R5. Condolences may be sent through http://www.saamis.com or to condolences@saamis.com subject heading Myrna Ironside.
