1931 ~ ALFRED KOHLS ~ 2022

It is with heavy hearts and great sorrow that we announce the passing of Alfred Morris Kohls on Thursday, January 20, 2022 at the age of 90 years. He will be lovingly remembered by his wife of almost 65 years, Doreen Kohls of Medicine Hat; three children, Pam (Bing) Sulz, Cindy Kohls (Glenn Adam), and Carey (Mike) McNeill; six grandchildren, Kaley Sulz (Joel Graham), Keaton Sulz, Lorin Kohls, Jaylyn Kohls (Rob Foley), Boston (Sarah) McNeill, and Clayton (Sarah) McNeill; two great grandchildren, Liam Burns and Jovie Graham; one brother, Ray (Jeanette) Kohls, one sister, Marlene (John) McKnight; two sisters-in-law, Winni Kohls and Elaine (Fred) Blondeau; one brother-in-law, Les Muhlbeier; two aunts; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, Lydia and David Kohls; Doreen’s parents, Henry and Leonora Muhlbeier; two brothers, Leonard (Carol) Kohls and Harvey (Joanne) Kohls; and one sister-in-law, Janice Muhlbeier. Farming life began for Alfred in 1957 at Golden Prairie where he would enjoy the next 57 years doing what he loved. There were so many fond memories made of the farm life because of Alfred’s love for farming and his family. Alfred was a good welder and carpenter and could fix almost anything but his talents were not limited, he also restored tractors, a model A car, a wooden buggy, several pedal tractors and built tractor cabs. He took up wood carving and has generously given carvings to family members. He enjoyed the simple things in life; his family was everything to him. There was great joy for him just watching his children and grandchildren have fun. Hours of entertainment were had on the swing set, slide, teeter totter and playhouse – all built from scratch by Alfred. In the winter he would push snow so we could enjoy the huge snow piles! The last two years he enjoyed his time at Masterpiece exercising daily as well as setting up puzzles. Alfred’s family meant everything to him; he was a very quiet, gentle man enjoying the simple life. He will be greatly missed by all of us and will remain in our hearts forever! A private funeral service will be held in the PATTISON CHAPEL on Saturday, January 29, 2022 at 2:00 p.m. with Pastor Daryl Martin officiating. The chapel service will be live streamed, and family and friends who are unable to attend are invited to watch the service by searching for the Pattison Funeral Home Youtube page. The video will go live 10 minutes prior to service time and will remain on the youtube page for future viewing. Those who wish to remember Alfred with a donation, may do so to the Margery E. 1960 ~ PHILLIP BYGRAVE ~ 2022

Phillip Mark Bygrave of Medicine Hat passed away on Tuesday, January 18, 2022 at the age of 61 years. He leaves to cherish his memory three children, Daniel (Charmine) Thompson of Prince George, British Columbia, Dustin (Elizabeth Thomas) Bygrave and their children, Dominik Pilgrim and Romi Bygrave, all of Medicine Hat, and Angela (Jordan) Painter and their God children, Derrick and Amythyst of Medicine Hat; the mother of his children, Ruth Myers; his parents, Joan Bygrave of Cambridge, Ontario and Phillip Robin (Diane) Hood; two brothers, Stephen Bygrave (Peggy Fetch) of Medicine Hat and Michael Bygrave (Betty Curtis) of Cambridge, Ontario; his sister, Robin-Lynn Lane (Larry Patey) of Cambridge, Ontario; as well as numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, and nephews. He was predeceased by three brothers, George Bygrave, Richard Hood, and Harold Bygrave; one sister, Margaret Dawn Hood; and his step father, Ivan Bygrave. Phill was a man with many hats. He was a loving father who gave his children, and their friends, many words of wisdom, helping shape who they are today. He spent many years volunteering his time for The Medicine Hat Speedway, lining up the cars before each race, The Elks, working the Crown & Anchor during Stampede Week or the casino throughout the rest of the year, and selling BINGO tickets to fundraise for SALTA Gymnastics, AMAC, and Medicine Hat Minor Hockey. Throughout the years, you could even see him in the stampede parade throwing candy to the kids for the Firehall Theatre company. If you liked amature theatre, chances were that you saw Phill on the stage for either Medicine Hat Musical Theatre or Firehall Theatre. His theatre credits go as far back as 1997 in the One Acts, or being a dwarf in Snow White: A Pantomime; the last show you would have seen him in was Into The Woods as part of the chorus. Friends and family remember fondly of the "escape scene" in Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, where Phill, as The Baker, pulled the bars apart while his cellmate was able to slip through. He helped out where he could during hockey games, from running the clock, to selling 50/50 tickets, or just hollering encouragement from the stands. He will be remembered for his booming laugh, and loud voice; for the jokes he told, and how he always made others feel welcome. He loved to fish, and had many spots around town that he knew he could visit without getting interrupted. He also knew all the best spots to find the best worms. In more recent years, you could often catch him downtown at the library mucking about with his friends, roaming the halls of the mall, or sitting in one of his various favourite spots so he could draw his face off. Whenever he saw you, he was always ready with a smile, a wave, a boisterous hello, and maybe even a big bear hug. He often sung karaoke at the Cecil or the Mainliner, or joined the jam nights out at the Jar Bar or at The Royal. He was fortunate that he was able to see his son Daniel get married, to visit with his mother and siblings in Ontario, to walk his daughter Angela down the aisle, and to meet his granddaughter Romi before he passed away. A memorial service will take place at a later date. Those who wish to remember Phillip with a donation, may do so to a charity of your choice. To e-mail an expression of sympathy, please direct it to: office@pattisonfuneralhome.com subject tlineheading: Phillip Bygrave, or you may visit http://www.pattisonfuneralhome.com and leave a message of condolence.

BEN STEGEN
February 1, 1923 ~ January 24, 2022

It is with heavy hearts that we share the passing of our wonderful Dad, Benard Norvi Stegen. He humbly came into this world February 1, 1923, born in the homestead house on the ranch and left us January 24, 2022, just a few days shy of his 99th birthday. Ben was a dashing young man and quickly won the heart of Mavis, the new Jenner school teacher from England. They travelled back across the big pond to England in 1959 for their wedding. Together they raised their family in Iddesleigh and then on the Stegen homestead ranch east of Jenner. Over the years, Ben ran a hardware store and propane sales in Iddesleigh, was the serviceman for the I & J Gas Co-op, as well as his farm and ranch operation. He especially enjoyed “branding season” and was active in the community organizations, always willing to lend a hand wherever needed. After their retirement to Medicine Hat, Ben continued to enjoy good health, played ball, curled and fished into his early nineties. One of the highlights of his senior slow-pitch career was pitching a shutout game at a tournament in Castor, AB at the age of 73. Dad liked to volunteer his time at the the Kiwanis Club, especially for the annual Christmas Dinner Program. He and Mom loved their grandchildren and great-grandchildren as they came along and stayed active in the Medicine Hat community.
Ben taught his family so many practical skills growing up on the farm/ranch, but it was his subtle teaching by example that resonates the strongest; his kindness, humility, generosity and genuine concern for other people. In his simple words recently, “I just think its important to be nice to people.” He was a gem of a person with such a playful and easy-going temperament. The family he created of children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren loved him and will dearly miss him, but we are comforted knowing that he is now comfortable and reunited with our mom.
Dad moved into the Wellington Retirement Residence, where he quickly grew to be a favorite with the staff and resided until his passing.
Ben was predeceased by his beloved wife of 60 years, Mavis; his parents, Helmer and Bertha; his three brothers, Harry, Leonard and Norman; his sister-in-law, Alice, and his niece, Marilyn. He leaves to cherish his memory his son, Grant (Leanne) and his daughter, Carol (Dale); his grandchildren, Jenna (Rory), Tiffany (Kyle), Todd, Carly, Kayla and Janelle, and his two great-grandchildren, Ben and Luke and his niece, Marj (Gerald).
A Celebration of Ben’s life will be held at Cook Southland Funeral Chapel, 901 – 13 Street SW, Medicine Hat on Saturday, January 29, 2022, at 2:00 P.M. with Pastor Carl Bogda officiating. Norman had an amazing support group, always surrounded by family, friends and peers from Redi and Core. His life was wonderful! He travelled extensively to many places including Hawaii, Disney World, Disneyland, Alaska, Branson, Missouri and eight cruises. He worked at Core, then Redi Bottle Depot and eventually retiring from Redi Recycling.
