1926 – BEN REINHELLER – 2021

Benny (Ben) Reinheller, beloved husband of Esther Reinheller for 74 years, went home to be with his Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ on Friday September 24th at the age of 94 years. He leaves to cherish his memory four children, Wes (Janice) Reinheller, David (Sheila) Reinheller, Wayne (Denise) Reinheller, and Dale Reinheller (Dave Whiteside) all of Medicine Hat; six grandchildren, Renee (Matt) Rood of Medicine Hat, Ryan (Andrea) Reinheller of Fairbanks Alaska, Aliesha (Kelly) Kurpjuweit, Amanda (Michael) Schneider, Michael (Jessica) Reinheller and Melissa (Tyler) Davidson all of Medicine Hat, and 23 great grandchildren.

Ben was born on November 22nd, 1926, on his family farm near Richmond Saskatchewan to Martin and Sophie Reinheller. He was the eldest of six siblings including four sisters, Julia Haberlack, (late Fred), Katie Lutz (late Nelson), Irene Cote (late Ray) Levina (Bill) and his late brother Albert (Eileen) Reinheller.

Ben left home in 1944 at the age of 18 to work in Taber, Alberta as a farm hand, and then moved to Medicine Hat to work at Medalta Potteries. Ben met the love of his life Esther Croissant in Medicine Hat and they married on October 26th 1946, the same year he started working for Canadian Pacific Railway. He remained there for almost 40 years until his retirement in 1986. In his last years with the railroad, Ben worked as a conductor on the passenger train and was so proud to take his grandchildren along for train rides to Field, B.C. Ben loved to keep busy, so after his retirement he worked the next 20 years for his son’s business Medican Construction in the wood shop. During Ben’s post retirement job, laughter could always be heard from the break room where Ben enjoyed extended coffee breaks with staff, and friends who would often stop by.

Ben’s relationship with Christ was the foundation for his life, and he was an active and devoted parishioner and board member of various churches in Medicine Hat over the years, including Grace Baptist, Temple Baptist, First Assembly and most recently River Park Community Church. Ben was also heavily involved in the early planning and development of both Eagles Nest Ranch and Pinecrest Baptist Bible Camp where he served on both boards for many years. Ben had the biggest heart, and along with his wife Esther spent years ministering at both the Lethbridge and Medicine Hat Remand Centres. ‘Gentle Ben’ was not one to judge others and had a heart for those who were down and out. In the last five years of his life he also supported the Oasis Centre feeding program (The Mustard Seed) where he loved to spend time and talk with anyone who needed support or comfort.

The family would like to stay a special thank you to all the residents of South Country Villa where Ben and Esther enjoyed the company of so many wonderful friends, who would often check in with fresh muffins in hand. Thank you also to all the homecare nurses and care aides who made it possible for Ben to live independently at home in his final years. Ben enjoyed and appreciated the tender love and care he received from the home care team, and would always send them home with a chocolate and say, “Take One for each Cheek”.

Our family will cherish forever how genuine, positive and upbeat Dad always was with a perfect dash of humour mixed in, we think that is what drew so many people towards him. We will forever be grateful for the legacy that he has left us.
We are so proud of you Dad. Thank for showing us how it’s done!

A private funeral service will be held in the PATTISON CHAPEL on Thursday, September 30, 2021 at 11:00 a.m. with Pastor Mark Borrows officiating. Due to the restrictions brought forward by the Chief Medical Officer of Health, indoor public gatherings are to be kept to 50 people. Masks are mandatory. BRETTON JAMES PRESTON HOPE

1976 – 2021

It is with profound sadness that the family of Brett (B.J.) Hope announce his sudden passing on September 23rd, 2021. Brett leaves to cherish his memory his grandmother, Phyllis Schneider; father, Bill Hope; his stepchildren, Tiahna and Josh Blaquiere; his sister, Nichole (Mark) Neubauer and their children Logan and Evie; sister, Bobbi (Rodney) Read and their children Tyson and Beau. He was predeceased by his mother, Linda (Sherwood) Hope.
Brett and Joanne Burns made a life together with their children Tiahna and Josh, in Redcliff, Alberta. As a family, they enjoyed camping, traveling to the mountains and spending time at the cabin at Elkwater. Brett was always up for backyard beers, with the promise of a good meal and entertaining stories that would be filled with his infectious giggle. Always a cheerleader, Brett loved attending sporting events featuring Tiahna, Josh, Logan and Evie. While Brett enjoyed watching hockey and football, he was an avid NASCAR fan and you could find him in front of the TV any given Sunday. Brett’s firm handshake was his trademark and he was great at building friendships with anyone who was lucky enough to cross his path.
Early in his career, Brett traveled extensively throughout the prairies working in the oil and gas industry. From there, he put in a good shift as a hired-hand at the Triangle Ranch in the Cypress Hills. This is where he developed a strong love for the land and formed a spiritual tie to this ranch that was never broken. He then transitioned to Landmark Feeds as a feed mill operator and thanks to his strong work ethic and charismatic personality, he was later promoted to the Regional Sales Coordinator with Trouw Nutrition.

DAVID MAST

August 31, 1944 ~ September 24, 2021

David Gordon Mast was born on August 31, 1944, in Regina, SK. After WWII, the family moved from Regina to Medicine Hat and Dave took all his schooling and completed his education in the City. During his teen years he worked at various locations in the Hat. Dave joined the Canadian Armed Forces in 1963 and served in the Canadian Artillery at various Bases with most of his service in Germany until he was released in 1985. He worked at BATUS in the Munitions Branch for 20 years. Dave is survived by his life partner, Linda Caswell; daughter, Carol O’Brien; step-children, Bev (Ian) Draper, Jorg (Anysley) Klinger, Dan (Kristy) Rance; grandchildren, Sean, David, Cody, Jessie, Beau; great-grandchildren, Aryanna, Noah, Ophelia, Sawyer and Lexi; brothers, Paul (Sharon), Reid; sister, Kathy (David) Miller as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Dave was predeceased by his wife, Patricia; daughter, Crystal; parents, Almer and Lois; sister-in-law, Robyn and niece, Kristen. Dave had a good voice and loved to sing and enjoyed good music. He sang in Musical Theatre and other musical venues. Dave enjoyed sports, fishing, camping, history, telling stories and always a good visit with a cup of joe. He will be sadly missed by all. Duncan Lewis Battrum, passed away peacefully on September 26, 2021 at the age of 81. He is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Elinor, his daughters Heather Fetter (Court) of Phoenix AZ, and Cheryle Battrum of Red Deer AB, and his brother Donald (Cheryl) of Calgary AB. As per Duncan's request, there will not be a funeral, and in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada.

Herb passed away on September 24th, 2021, at the age of 85 years. He leaves to cherish his memory his loving wife, Minnie; Daughters, Yvonne Krause (Vance Kaglea) and their children, Wacey and Bailey Jo; Sherry (Ken) Kundert and their children, Kelsey and Korilye; Sue (Blaine) Hudec and their children, Cassie (Ben) Bradley; great grandchildren, Emerly and Elody, and Kirby (Brad) Strensrud; great grandchildren, Hayes and Huntley; Vianne (Tom) Herman and their children, Ty and Tia; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Herb was born in Medicine Hat and raised in Hilda on the ranch. He met Minnie in Hilda area. Herb’s life centered around horses. He was involved in roping, barrel racing and horse racing. He also enjoyed fishing, travelling, making the annual onion calendar, playing cards with friends and studying horse pedigrees. Herb was a lifetime member of the AOHA and his proudest accomplishment was receiving the 50 year legacy award in Amarillo, Texas in October 2018. Herb and Minnie were dedicated fans of family and friends who were involved in rodeo and racing.

It is with heavy hearts that the family announces that their beloved mother, Jeanne Marie Dirk, passed away on Saturday, September 25, 2021, in Medicine Hat, at the age of 84 years. Jeanne attended Alexandra High School Business program and worked at the C.P. Telegraph as an office worker. She married Aloysius Dirk in Medicine Hat on May 3, 1958. Upon marriage, she embraced being a wife, homemaker, mother, and especially a grandmother. Jeanne employed her business skills as bookkeeper for her husband’s finish carpentry work. She will be remembered by many for her laugh. Jeanne’s memory will be treasured in the hearts of her children and grandchildren, Marcel (Andrea) and their son, Pierson, Doug (Bonnie), Roger (Carol) and their son, Matthew, Kathy and Lynnette (Bruce); sister, Mary Ann “Merc” Weigel; sister-in-law, Kay Tarnoczi (nee Pederson) as well as many nieces and nephews. KENNETH ALLAN PEDERSEN

April 26,1958 – September 25, 2021

Mr. Ken Pedersen passed away on September 25, 2021, with family by his side in Brooks, AB. He lost a hard-fought battle to a sudden diagnosis of cancer.

Ken was predeceased by his parents, Olivia and Willis Pedersen; brother, Shane Pedersen; uncles, Lenard Pedersen, Darwin Pedersen, and Ronald Fjeld.

Ken is survived by his daughter, Kyla (Geoff) McMullin and their children, Tally Rose, Sutton Rose; daughter, Kellie (BJ) Farries and their children, Trayton, Kynslee; daughter, Kennedy (Jared) Pedersen; sister, Delvina (Earl) Schafer; nieces and nephews, Melissa (Jesse) Johanson and their children Waylon, Harper; Dennis Schafer and his children, Oskar, Iza, Jolene; Shana (Chad) Baron and their children Kemp, Kendrick; Aunts, Luella Pedersen, Maureen Field; special longtime friend, Lori Griffith; many cousins and a host of many friends near and far.

Ken was born in Maple Creek, SK on April 26, 1958, to proud parents Willis and Olivia Pedersen. He was raised on the family farm at Robsart, SK. Ken attended school at both Robsart, SK and Consul, SK. He also attended the U of S in Saskatoon taking Agricultural Mechanics.

Ken had a heart for farming. At a very young age, Ken would drive grain trucks, run tractors, and was very independent to do anything he could on the farm. He enjoyed farming with his Dad and his Uncle Lenard. Ken had a love for the animals, pigs & dogs especially. He could get them to do all kinds of tricks. When the family farm was sold, Ken moved on and worked many jobs throughout Saskatchewan and Alberta as heavy-duty mechanic, labourer, and truck driver. He enjoyed wheeling the big trucks through many cities through Canada & the USA.

When Ken moved to Medicine Hat, AB, he spent many of his years working in oil field as mechanic & labourer. The past 12 years, Ken lived at Cessford, AB. He worked with Special Areas as a Grader Operator. Ken had a huge host of friends. He loved to visit with old friends and always made new friends. Once Ken knew you, he never forgot who you were, and it would be guaranteed that he would walk across a street just to say hi! Ken was sincerely interested in the connections of people. It was amazing how he could keep track of relatives and friends and would never forget how he knew them or how others should know them. He had an amazing mind that could lock in all this information and never forget it. He was a big teddy bear who loved to have a good time, socialize, take in special events, loved to tease, and always showed a genuine interest to check in to make sure everyone was well. He will be sadly missed by his family and friends.

Ken’s family would like to thank all family and friends for your concern, support, and help through this sudden and difficult time. Thanks to all the doctors, nurses, and support staff at Brooks hospital for the kind and compassionate care he was given.

William Alfred Schnitzler passed away on Thursday, September 23rd, 2021 in Regina, SK. Bill was born to William and Rose Schnitzler on May 11th, 1941 in Allan, SK. He was predeceased by his 1st wife, Frances Schnitzler; 2nd wife, Jean Schnitzler; parents, William and Rose Schnitzler; sister, Frances Miller; brother, Raymond Schnitzler; sister, Caroline Ellis; and brother, Joseph Schnitzler. He spent his leisure time curling, golfing and wood working. Bill was a gifted carpenter, building houses and several pieces of beautiful furniture. Gardening was another past time he enjoyed. Bill became involved with SaskTel Pioneers and the telephone clown group. He found cheering up patients in the hospitals, especially the children's ward, time well spent. Church was always important throughout his life, starting as an alter server to becoming a Deacon in the Diocese of Calgary on June 9th, 2008. His work was assisting the priests at the altar proclaiming God's Word, tribunal, weddings, baptisms, funeral vigils, funerals and lector, leading the pastoral care team, Chaplin at the hospital, minister of Holy Communion, visitation minister at care homes, leading the bereavement team and visiting at the Remand Center giving support to prisoners. Bill was a loving, generous and giving person and will be greatly missed by all those that knew him. The Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Thursday, September 30th, 2021 at 11:00 a.m. in St. Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church, 1064 3rd Ave NW, Moose Jaw, SK. The Most Reverend Arch Bishop Don Bolen will be the presiding celebrant with Homilist Father George Thattuparampil, visiting priests and Deacon Lamont Dyck. THORBJORN "TOM" NOSTERUD

1928 – 2021

Dad was born, Thorbjorn Nosterud, to Lauritz and Aarny on May 29th, 1928, near Brooks, Alberta. He spent his early years on farms in the Brooks and later the Tilley district. He became known as Tom, thanks to his first-grade teacher who decided to give him an English name. It was in Tilley that Dad was introduced to the Lutheran Church, and he was confirmed there as a teenager. He was a life-long member in the church and served in many roles there as a Sunday school teacher, choir member, deacon, and usher. It was a sad day for him when he had to give up his position assisting with communion to let the younger generation take over.
Dad’s dream was to own a farm and he worked many jobs in the winter season to make this happen. In 1962, he was finally able to buy land in Tilley and here he set up a home for himself and his parents. A few years later, he met Mom and they married in 1966. On the farm, the family grew to four children and a second house was built to give his parents their own home. In 1998, the farm was sold, and Dad and Mom retired to Seven Persons where they have continued to live to the present.
One of Dad’s joys was his wood-working shop both on the farm and later in the garage at Seven Persons. He spent many hours creating things out of salvaged pieces of wood, most of which were given away to family and friends from all over. The Bow Island Lutheran Church VBS program was also a beneficiary as he created projects for the children to make for themselves.
Dad was also an avid lover of music. When he was young, there was no money for instruments but as an adult, he purchased his first button accordion which he taught himself to play. With this, he liked to entertain family and friends, as well as at the nursing home in Brooks and the kindergarten class at Tilley school with daughter, Wendy on the piano accordion.
Another joy of Dad’s was travel. He and Mom took many trips together, including 4 trips to Disneyland and once to Disneyworld. I am sure if the kids or grandkids had announced they were going, he would have rallied himself to go again, too. He also made his dream trip to Norway to visit family there and see where his parents grew up.
Dad also enjoyed reading many different subjects. He was the only person I know who read and entire set of encyclopedias from A to Z. Some of his favorite material was theology and WW2 which he liked to discuss with whoever would listen.
Dad’s grandchildren and great-grandchildren were a great pleasure to him as he watched them play and grow up.
Dad is survived by his wife of 55 years, Sarah; daughter, Wendy (Don Barg); grandchildren, Tabetha (Dean Hystad) and Crystal (Kyle Welz); great-grandchildren, Callum and Annika Hystad and Levi Welz; son, Thomas (Karen) and grandchildren, Adam, Katriel, Matana, Ava, Shira, Joelle, Erella, Tova, Renisha, Andrew; daughter-in-law, Kathy and grandchildren, Micheal, Aiden and Bryce; daughter, Charlene (Dennis Mytrunec) and grandchildren, Jonas, Kristopher, and Megan; sisters, Karen and Elsa (Dean Hendricksen); brothers, Leif (Joan) and Rolf (Grace); as well as many nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by his parents; son, Jerry; infant sister and brother-in-law, Ove Pederson.
