1932 ~ DONALD JENKINS ~ 2021

Donald Haskel Jenkins passed away on Tuesday, June 15, 2021 at the age of 89 years, beloved husband of Donna Jenkins of Bow Island. He also leaves to cherish his memory three children, Linda (Larry) Volk of Ponoka, Larry Jenkins (Melanie Richard) of Ponoka and David (Rhonda) Jenkins of Calgary; seven grandchildren, Robyn Volk (John Hobbs), Brandi Jenkins, Dustin Volk, Lynsi Jenkins (Scott Peake), Tim (Jenny) Volk, Cassie (Jim) Hager and Cole Jenkins; four great grandchildren, Rebecca, Callum, Sawyer and Nia; two sisters, Doreen Sailer and Joyce (Roy) Johnson as well as numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, Haskel and Lillian Jenkins; daughter, Susan Jenkins; granddaughter, Fallon Jenkins; his brother, Ken Jenkins and sister Kay Thorson. Donald was born in Bow Island, Alberta to Haskell and Lillian Jenkins on February 2, 1932 and grew up as the eldest son in his childhood family of five children, on a farm south of Bow Island. He married Donna Annon on October 4, 1950, surrounded by family and friends. Shortly after his marriage they moved onto the family farm where Donald continued to farm until 1995. He and Donna moved into the town of Bow Island in 1982 after building their dream home. Donald curled for many years and in his later years he revealed his love of the game while watching the brier. He was a charter member with the Elks for many years and took pride in the good works of this organization. Donna and Donald loved to camp and became avid snowbirds, spending many winters in Yuma. He spent much of his life socializing with friends and family and was so very beloved and will be dearly missed by many. The funeral service will be held in St. Andrew’s United Church (139 – 2nd Ave West Bow Island) on Friday, July 2, 2021 at 1:00 p.m. with Gloria Angle presiding. 1940 ~ LORNE KRAUSS ~ 2021

Lorne Krauss of Elkwater, beloved husband of Gloria Krauss, passed away on Wednesday, June 23rd, 2021 at the age of 81 years. Lorne also leaves to cherish his memory his children, Lorna (Joel) Henschke and their children, Bailey and Jacob; Monty (Andrea) Krauss and their children, Kade, Carter, Parker, and Jessa; Kirk (Noella) Krauss and their children, Rhett and Ryder; and Penny (Lee) Pahl and their children Wyatt, Dawson, and Jaxon; brother, Lavern (Shirley) Krauss; and sister, Shirl Volk. Lorne was predeceased by his parents, Jacob and Bertha Krauss as well as brother and sister-in-law, Ken (Diane) Krauss. Lorne was born on February 22nd, 1940 at the Benny farm with his Grandma Scheffelmeier on hand to assist with his and his twin-brother, Lavern’s, arrival. He married the love of his life on November 12th, 1966 and together they moved to their home ranch in the hills by Elkwater where together they raised their family. Lorne enjoyed the ranch-life and all that it offered. He enjoyed roping and golfing and in his later years watching TV. A private celebration of Lorne’s life will be held at St. Margaret’s Church, Eagle Butte, Medicine Lodge on Sunday, June 27th, 2021 at 2:00 pm with Dr. David J. Carter officiating. Friends may gather outside the church provided Covid-19 restrictions are adhered to. Audio will be played outside of the church. Please bring your own chairs if you wish to be seated outside. 1947 ~ GLEN KOUTSKY ~ 2021

Glen Alfred Koutsky of Medicine Hat Alberta passed away Wednesday June 23, 2021 at the age of 74 years. Glen is survived by his wife Elaine, his sons Jeremy (Kaitlyn) and Matthew (Alexis), and grandson Holden. He is also survived by his brother-in-law Richard, his cousin Francis, three half siblings Terry (Rod), Patty (Mel), and Frank (Peggy) and many nieces and nephews. Glen Alfred Koutsky was born June 15, 1947 in Hillcrest Alberta, the first of two children to Joseph and Hilda Koutsky. He was predeceased by his father Joseph, his mother Hilda and his sister Linda (Mastel). Glen spent much of his childhood in Hillcrest, later ending up in Prelate Saskatchewan after the passing of his father Joseph. It was in Prelate that he met the love of his life Elaine at his sister Linda’s wedding. Glen and Elaine got married in Medicine Hat in June 1977. They built a house and welcomed their sons, Jeremy in early 1980 and Matthew in late 1981. Glen is well known for his long distinguished career as a long haul truck driver, driving all over Canada. He started his driving career as an ambulance driver in Northern Alberta. Upon retiring from truck driving, he took up building maintenance at several local manufacturing facilities, later working for Grandview Village alongside Elaine, a job that he greatly enjoyed for several years. Due to Covid-19 restrictions, a private funeral service will be held in the PATTISON CHAPEL on Monday, June 28, 2021 at 11:00 a.m. with Life Celebrant Pat Grisonich. 1959 – MONICA SCHLAHT – 2021

 

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Monica Schlaht, beloved wife of Rudy Schlaht. Monica lost her long courageous battle with cancer on Monday June 21st at the age of 61 years. Monica leaves to cherish her memory her children, Justin Schlaht (Catherine Kohls), Jenna (Dustin) Vossler; her grandchildren Haley Schlaht, Kenize Schlaht and Jade Penney. Monica leaves to mourn, her brother Peter (Jody) Leupold and their children Dominic (Claire) Leupold and Desirae (Brandon) Kinahan; one sister in-law Irene (Dale) Plotsky and their children Derek (Jenny) Plotsky, Kyle (Hannah) Plotsky, as well as countless close friends, many cats, fish and birds. She was predeceased by her stepson Chris Schlaht, her parents Hans and Martha Leupold and her father and mother in-law Christian and Amanda Schlaht, her precious dog Zoe and many cats over the years. Monica was born June 23, 1959 in Winnipeg Manitoba, where her parents ran Leos Home Bakery. At the age of two Monica moved with her parents to Medicine Hat where her parents opened the City Bakery and Monica grew up learning the art of baking. Monica married Rudy Schlaht on August 5th, 1984. Monica along with the support of Rudy decided it was in the best interest for her to step away from the bakery and concentrate on raising her family. Monica opened the Costume Shoppe above the City Bakery in 1985, which she operated for 36 years. She actively participated in the kiddie’s parades for many years winning 1st prize several years in a row. Even with Monica’s busy schedule she was always supportive of Rudy through his career and put her children above everything else, even when her health was not the best. She was always super proud of her children and grandchildren’s achievements. Monica was known for her many outstanding qualities, her beautiful smile outlined her positive attitude while facing any challenge with courage, strength, and cheerfulness. She was known for being a fantastic seamstress as well as an excellent baker and cook, her gardening skills were outstanding and was an active member of the horticultural society for many years. Her friends and family would always turn to her for her sound advice. Her talented decorating skills could never be missed, whether it was decorating the house and yard for the holidays or her famous wreaths and shadow boxes. Her door was always open for anyone (and the fridge was always full) she loved to invite anyone and everyone into her home. Monica loved her animals and was always welcoming a new addition into her home or feeding the strays outside. Mom we will love and remember you today, tomorrow, forever and always. Your kind and caring spirit will always be carried in our hearts. 1973 – JASON CAMERON – 2021

It is with the deepest sorrow that we announce the passing of Jason Cameron who passed away surrounded by family at his home in Medicine Hat on June 10th 2021.

He is survived by his loving family; Mother Tereena Cameron, sons James and Jarred Cameron, common law girlfriend Melissa Maynard, stepchildren Cheyanne and Jaxson, father Norman Acheson, Numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.

He was predeceased by Grandma Sam Cameron, Grandma and Grandpa Stuart & Dori Acheson, auntie Donnaleen Tokamp and auntie Shirleen Cameron.

1925 – 2021

Raymond Richard Ulrich, beloved husband of the late Margaret Ulrich, passed away in Bow Island on Saturday, June 19, 2021 at the age of 96 years.

He was predeceased by his loving wife Margaret Ulrich, daughter Linda Gatz and her husband Larry Gatz, son Duane Ulrich and daughter Shirley MacMillian; mother Anna Ulrich and father John Ulrich; brothers Lawrence Ulrich, Leroy Ulrich, Donald Ulrich and sister Josephine Sittler.

Ray was born in Scott, Saskatchewan on May 18, 1925 and lived on the farm south east of there until coming to Bow Island in 1950.

His main passions in life were farming, curling, family camping and fishing, but he also enjoyed many other activities including hunting, skiing and wood working. He knew how to and very much enjoyed having a good time, dancing and socializing with the good people of Bow Island and surrounding area. Ray was a member of the Knights of Columbus and was very active and helpful in the community.

ROY BETCKER

1936 – 2021

 

Roy Betcker passed away peacefully on June 23, 2021, at the age of 84 with his wife and children at his side. He was survived by his loving wife of 54 years, Bonnie; children, Brad (Lisa), Monty (Shelly) and Cindy (Aaron); grandchildren, Tanner Betcker (Vicki), Morgan Betcker (Casey), Rylee Bock (Quinton), Clay Betcker, Cauy, Haylee and Cheyenne Elhart; great grandchildren, Heidi Betcker and Hayes Bock. He was a proud grandpa and great grandpa.

Roy was born in Walsh, Alberta on October 21, 1936. He ranched his whole life. Cows and horses were his passion. He loved nothing better than moving cows on horseback and mostly visiting with his fellow riders after. Roy loved visiting in general, from days filled with ranching activities, to evenings playing cards, to more recently having coffee with friends and strangers alike at “The Mall”.

He loved the sport of Rodeo. He went to them all – big and small. From Elkwater to Canadian Finals and NFR in Las Vegas. Roy enjoyed the outdoors. He spent as many hours as possible each and every day out doing what he loved.

Dad was proud of all his children for following in his footsteps and loved to attend and hear about the achievements and activities of all his grandchildren.

A service for those who wish to attend will be held at the family ranch on July 3 at 1 pm with Rev. Dr. David Carter officiating. TAYLOR (nee GILCHRIST)

Muriel Joanne Taylor (Gilchrist), known to her friends and family as Joanne, Auntie Jo and Grandma Jo, passed away peacefully at the age of 83, with family at her side on June 13, 2021 in Victoria, BC, after a long battle with multiple myeloma.

 

Joanne was an international traveller, a published writer, a lifelong political and social activist, a gifted artist and dedicated to family. Her wide-ranging creative talents, love of adventure and community involvement continued to provide her with positive sources of energy, happiness and satisfaction.

 

Joanne grew up in Alberta on the Deer Creek Ranch, took most of her schooling in Milk River but graduated from high school in Warner. She worked in advertising in Calgary and Vancouver after completing a B.A. in Psychology and Fine Arts from the University of Saskatchewan in 1958 and a Diploma in Business Administration in 1960. Travelling and working in Europe and the Middle East in the 1960s, Joanne was an usher at Covent Garden Opera, a puppeteer, a barmaid, a shop girl, and a Paris au pair. She returned to Alberta and, in 1977, began teaching Life Skills and Special Needs classes at the Medicine Hat College, where she met Dan, whom she married in 1978. She later became a social worker with the Alberta Government and later a very active volunteer for Medalta. In 2002 she and Dan moved to Deer Field Farm on Vancouver Island, where she grew squash for local restaurants and continued creating art. Following Dan’s death in 2004, Joanne moved to Sidney, BC where she continued her creative arts and volunteerism, most recently for the Green Party of Canada.

 

Joanne is survived by her brothers and their families, Tom (Lois) Gilchrist and Glen (Peggy) Gilchrist, as well as the children of her blended family: Kristen Needham and Jeff (Sandra) Needham, Daniel (Jane) Taylor, Shari Featherstone, Terri Taylor, Susan (Gary) Rodgers, Rod (Amy) Taylor. She has 15 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren and was predeceased by her husband of 26 years, Daniel Gregory Taylor.

A celebration of life will be held in Victoria later this year once travel and gathering restrictions are eased.
