1920 ~ MATILDA SCHLAHT ~ 2021 Matilda Lenora “Tillie” Schlaht of Medicine Hat passed away on Thursday, May 6th, 2021 at the age of 101 years. The Funeral Service was held yesterday at SAAMIS MEMORIAL FUNERAL CHAPEL. Interment followed at Saamis Prairie View Cemetery. KATHERINE CHRISTINA “Katie” SCHAFER (Nee: Bosch) February 9, 1919 ~ May 16, 2021
With much sadness we announce the passing of our beloved Mom at the Good Samaritan Center in Medicine Hat with her family by her side. She was predeceased by her husband Anthony “Tony” Schafer on September 18, 1997. She leaves to cherish her memory one daughter, Jeanette (George) Forrest of Grande Prairie and one son, Raymond (Marilyn) Schafer of Calgary; grandchildren Darrel (Cathy) Forrest, Jackie C. Forrest (Ron Holtorf), Kristie Schafer, and Ryan (Madison) Schafer, great grandchildren, Jordyn and Evan Forrest; Jade Holtorf; Emmery Schafer; one sister Mary vandenBrink of Calgary and numerous nephews, nieces and friends. Katie was predeceased by her parents, Joseph and Helena Bosch, sisters, Annie Bespflug, Martha Hagel, Lena Schafer, Tillie Krassman; brothers, Tony and Lucas Bosch, and numerous brothers and sisters-in-law, family members and friends.
Katie was a very loving person who valued her family, her faith and her friends as most important in her life. She grew up in Burstall, Saskatchewan and married Tony J. Schafer in 1938. They lived and farmed in the Schuler, Alberta community until retirement, then in 1971, moved into the town of Schuler. The next move was into Medicine Hat in 1980. They were involved in many social events with family and friends – playing cards, dancing and bowling. She liked to sew and cook and made the best turkey dinners, cinnamon buns and always had a big vegetable garden. However, she said she wanted to be remembered for encouraging her children to get an education and make a success of their lives. I guess that wish has been granted as her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren have all gone on to university. After Tony passed away her life changed once again. Katie moved into Park Meadows in 1997 and enjoyed her life there for 12 years. She took part in many social activities- shuffleboard, card playing, birthday parties and her 90th in 2009 with 125 of her family and friends in attendance. She next moved into The Wellington in September, 2009 and enjoyed new people and visiting with relatives and friends. On February 9, 2019 she celebrated her 100th birthday at The Wellington with about 150 family and friends. Shortly after, she took a bad fall and was hospitalized for four months. From there she moved to the Good Samaritan South Ridge Village where she received excellent care from the staff. Katie’s Roman Catholic faith was very important to her. She was a 66 year member with the C.W.L. and had a lifetime of devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary, watched mass on TV and recited her prayers and the Rosary daily. She was a devoted wife, mother to her children, grandchildren, great- grandchildren and will be dearly missed.
She wanted to express the following message to her family and friends, “I have lived a good life, and want to thank you for the love and friendship you have shown me over the years, God Bless you all”.
Due to Covid-19 restrictions, a private family funeral Mass will be celebrated in the Holy Family Parish, Roman Catholic Church, on Thursday, May 20, 2021. You are invited to watch the video, tributes and mass online starting at 1:30 with the mass to follow at 2:00 p.m. Please go to Youtube.com and type in Medicine Hat Holy Family Church.
