Always a strong community supporter, Herman served on the Redcliff School Board for 17 years, the Redcliff Planning Commission, the Gordon Memorial United Church Board, the Redcliff Chamber of Commerce, and the Redcliff Library Board. He was a Charter member and a life member of the Redcliff Lions Club, and was an honorary life member of the Medicine Hat Rotary Club. The Redcliff Lions dedicated a park in his honor in 2009.

With all this activity, Herman still found time to be a loving husband, father, and good friend. Fran and Herman travelled extensively, and spent many cherished vacations in Barbados. His children will always remember the annual summer camping trips to Mara Lake. Herman was devoted to his family and led by example.
