1963 ~ EDITH BECKER ~ 2021

Edith Becker of Medicine Hat passed away on February 28, 2021 at the age of 57 years. Edith was born in Gull Lake on July 10, 1963, she would have turned 58 this year. She was born special in so many ways, but she had many hurdles to overcome to live a full life. Edith lived in Swift Current for a short time and then came to Medicine Hat. Through the wonderful support programs that Medicine Hat has to offer she was able to live and work independently. She spent time at the Kinsmen Training Center, worked at the Veiner Center, a Daycare in Crescent Heights and the bottle depot. She also attended George P. Vanier School. Edith enjoyed the many friendships that she made here through Redi Enterprises and CORE. She has had some exceptional workers in her life, most notably Crystal Deobald and Natasha Hagel. She lived in her own apartment, had weekend sleepovers with her special friends Christine, Carol, and Monica where they would watch movies and order take-out. She learned 10 pin bowling thanks to the careful and watchful coaching of Pat Enns and was able to participate in Special Olympics. She had numerous trophies and medals that she was extremely proud of. She really enjoyed her bus trips with her companions, but none more than Tim Pedley (her sweetie). Edith always had a special wit about her and loved family gatherings. We had many evenings of card games and Sunday suppers. She loved birthdays and Christmas. She loved getting presents, and she loved going on trips. She would call people "turkey" and would get a great kick out of teasing and badgering but always in a loving way. She had a wonderful laugh and a beautiful smile. She sometimes used to crush hard on her sisters spouses and would disown us if we tried to limit the phone calls. She loved "blue ice cream" and Dairy Queen Oreo blizzards. Her routine was to visit Dairy Queen daily for a fill up. She had her own booth and would bring her bag of crosswords and knitting. If someone would be sitting at her booth, she would patiently wait until they went to the washroom, and she would take her spot back. Everyone knew her there and they treated her special. She also really enjoyed her "Tim Bits" and Pepsi!. She was a bit of a trickster, and loved interacting with other people. She used to go up to the Co-op on 13th avenue to visit her sweetie, Tim. He was always happy to see her. She enjoyed music and dancing and the many social activities provided through CORE and REDI. As Edith got older, she unfortunately suffered from Dementia and later seizures. She came full circle and became a resident at 13th Street (Vanier House) which was where she had once gone to school. She was reunited with many of her friends that she made and workers that knew her from the start. The care and compassion, love and support that she received there felt like a fitting place for her to spend her remaining time. I will forever be grateful for the compassionate care that she received there. Shelley, Donia, Judy, Sofia, Gloria, Mercy, Alex, Amparo, Apiny, Darrel, Jayson, Mia, Veronica, Lavanya, Cathy, and the many others made every day count. Pre-Covid there were many outings which she enjoyed immensely. It was her home. Edith was predeceased by her nephew, Graeme Porter; father, Alex Becker and her mother, Mary Becker. She leaves to cherish her two sisters, Myrna (Keith) Porter and Norma (Ray) Fewer; nephews, Sean, Devin (Alexandria); niece, Kendra Porter; nephew, Brad and niece, Kimberly Lindsay. She will forever remain in our hearts as she was a special gift that made us all better people. Special thanks to Dr. Van Mulligan, Dr. Ciubota, Dr. Thorogood, Devonna Sannachan, Eileen Cote, paramedics, CORE and REDI. Last week, family and close friends gathered at Hillside Cemetery to celebrate the life of Leonard Beierbach. Memories of their dad were shared by Laura and Corey with all those present. It was such a peaceful reunion with his wife, Marlene and son, Randy.

RON KING

1935 – 2021

It is with heavy hearts that the family of Ronald Herman King, affectionately known by most as Tar, announce his peaceful passing at the Medicine Hat Regional Hospital on Sunday, February 28, 2021, at the age of 85 years. Ron leaves to cherish his memory three children, Reg (Marilyn) King, Russell (Michelle) Christopher and Michelle Christopher; grandchildren, Logan King, Mika Christopher-Moore (Harrison), Alex Grant and his son, Jacob Grant, Meagan Grant-Morales and her two sons, Gabriel and Giovani Morales, Melanie Hyland (Jason), Chelsey (TJ) Winquist and their two children, Alma and Perri Winquist. Ron will be lovingly remembered by his sister, Martha Henshaw as well as several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his wife, Louise King; parents, Walter and Pauline King; four brothers, Walter, Stanley, Henry and Fred; six sisters, Anne, Violet, Mabel, Mildred, Ethel and Agnes as well as in-laws, Myron and Francis Charnetski. Ronald Herman King was born the youngest of twelve children on April 17, 1935, to proud parents, Walter and Pauline King in Sceptre, Saskatchewan. Growing up, Ron worked on the family farm and dairy while also working for Clarence Grant at the Sceptre Garage. He loved sports of all kinds and excelled at baseball, curling and hockey. Ron married Louise Charnetski in Calgary, Alberta on October 8, 1963, proudly accepting her two children, Russell and Michelle Christopher as his own. On January 13, 1965, they completed their family with the birth of their son, Reginald Myron King. Ron looked after the family farm with his brother, Walter and eventually with his son, Reg. Ron and Reg developed a special bond through working the land, playing catch, their Sunday fishing trips to the river and evenings spent sitting and visiting out on the deck. Ron and Louise retired to Medicine Hat in 2011 where they enjoyed life together until her passing on November 23, 2019. Shortly after, Ron moved into the Teeoda Lodge where he continued to reside until his passing. He will forever be remembered for his very caring and understanding nature. Ron’s great sense of humour and the sound of him singing his funny little songs will forever resonate with his children, step-children and their families whom he loved dearly. Ron’s life will be honoured and his memory cherished without the proceedings of a formal funeral. (Condolences may be expressed by visiting our website at http://www.cooksouthland.com).
