1924 ~ VICTORIA DEIS ~ 2021

Victoria Deis (nee Lerner) passed away peacefully on Tuesday, February 16, 2021 at the age of 96 years at Medicine Hat Regional Hospital. Victoria was born June 10, 1924 in Fox Valley, Saskatchewan to Rochus and Mathilda Lerner. She was the third of six children that grew up on the family farm near Fox Valley. On October 20, 1947 she married Valentine “Walter” Deis. They began their life together and started a family on the Deis homestead. They moved into Fox Valley where Walter worked for several years as a grain buyer for Patterson while they continued to farm. They retired from farming in 1984 and moved into their newly purchased house in Medicine Hat. In 1993 they became condo owners and residents of the newly opened South View Grand. Victoria continued to live there after Valentine’s passing. Walter and Victoria enjoyed many happy years of retirement; dancing, bowling, playing cards and generally socializing with their many friends. Victoria leaves to cherish her memory five children, Wilfred (Bonnie) Deis of Okotoks, Don Deis of Saskatoon, Patrick (Beverly) Deis of Calgary, James (DondaLee) Deis of Fox Valley and Judy (Heinz) Strothmann of Medicine Hat; ten grandchildren; seventeen great grandchildren; her brother, William “Bill”, her sister, Rosemarie Sowinski as well as numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her loving husband, Valentine; her parents, Rochus and Mathilda and three brothers, Leo, Marcus, and Paul. Due to Covid-19 restrictions, a funeral mass by invitation only will be celebrated at Holy Family Parish 1451 Strachan Road SE MEDICINE HAT, AB T1B 4V3, on Saturday, February 20, 2021 at 11:00am with Father Iqbal Khurshid celebrant. 1926 ~ AGNES STEELE ~ 2021

Agnes Maude Steele of Medicine Hat, passed away on February 11, 2021 at the age of 94 years, beloved wife of the late Ralph Steele. Agnes was born the fifth child in a family of six in Dauphin, Manitoba to Alfred and Caroline Scarff. She moved to Calgary where she met and married Ralph in 1953. They enjoyed sixty-six wonderful years together. These years brought them three children, Carol, John, and Joanne and moves to Fort William, Regina, Vancouver, Edmonton, back to Calgary and finally Medicine Hat. Agnes was always involved in helping people, whether family, at church or other volunteer organizations. Agnes’ Christian faith was the foundation for her kind, caring spirit. She was chaplain for the credit women’s association in Vancouver, and helped at the Salvation Army women’s shelter, all while working full time and running her home with teenage children. Later she volunteered at the Cross Cancer institute and brought comfort to many people going through cancer treatment which she herself had experienced. Agnes’ life was founded on a vibrant Christian faith. May she rest in peace and rise in glory.

 

She leaves to cherish her memory three children, seven grandchildren and four great grandchildren: Carol Lynn (John) Fedoruk and their children David (Catherine -Alex, Ben, Will); Sarah (Jeremy, Bryleigh); John Alfred (Franciane) Steele and their children John-Daniel (Victoria), Jessica, Luc; Joanne Retta (Rob) MacDormand and their children James and Amy; as well as several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents Caroline and Alfred Scarff; her husband Ralph on November 2, 2019; five siblings, Amy Brown , David Scarff, Florence Scarff, Joseph Scarff and Mary Scarff.

 

A private funeral service will be held in the PATTISON CHAPEL on Saturday, February 20, 2021 with Rev. Canon Dr. John Alfred Steele, CD and The Rev. Dr. Oz Lorentzen co-officiating. Interment will take place in Burnaby with her husband Ralph. 1935 – MARTIN GYORKOS – 2021

Martin Gyorkos passed away on Tuesday, February 16, 2021 at the age of 85 years, beloved husband of Bernice Gyorkos of Medicine Hat. He also leaves to cherish his memory three children, Cindy Gyorkos (Randy Stein), Susan (Shaun) Meagher and Jeff Gyorkos all of Medicine Hat; two grandchildren, George Meagher and Jillian Meagher; one brother Michael Gyorkos; two sisters, Mary Gyorkos and Anne Davies as well as one sister-in-law Doreen Gyorkos and numerous nieces and nephews. Martin was predeceased by his parents Anna and Stephen Gyorkos and two brothers, Steve (Mary) Gyorkos and John Gyorkos and a brother-in-law Howard Davies. Dad, you gave all of us so much and there is nothing you would not have done for your family. You were amazing! You battled so many health concerns over the years but you did so with a fighting and brave attitude. Though it is incredibly hard you are no longer physically with us, you remain forever in our hearts. Dad, in this journey of life you have so earned this peacefulness, sleep well. 1937 – DONNA BABA – 2021

Donna Francine Baba passed away on Sunday, February 14, 2021 at the age of 83 years, beloved wife of Ron (Toki) Baba of Medicine Hat. She also leaves to cherish her memory two children, Bryan Florence and Trevor Florence; one granddaughter and two great grandchildren, Mary Baba and her children Reed Baba and Raya Dousselaere; four sisters, Elenore Bell, Dorothy Cox, Esther Sherwood and Alice Greening as well as numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents Frances and Arne Jacobsen; one son Kerry Baba on December 29, 2019 and one daughter Dawn Baba in 1970; three brothers, Howard Jacobsen, Robert Jacobsen and Gilbert Jacobsen; two sisters, Agnes Olsen and Thelma Daly. LILLIAN ‘ETTA’ CHURCH

1940 ~ 2021

 

Lillian Vyetta ‘Etta’ Church passed away on Tuesday, February 9, 2021, at the age of 80 years. Etta was born in Olds, Alberta and raised near Sundre (James River), the only daughter of four children to Mildred and Elton Bowness. Etta met Allan Church in 1957 and they were married soon after. She is survived by two sons: Bob (Wanda) and their family, Carson, Sarah (Ryan) and Kyle (Teanna); Kelly (Imelda) and their family, Nicole (Desmond) and Ryan as well as three great-grandchildren, Chase, Adelaide and Barret. Etta made numerous friendships in Carstairs where her family grew up and lived for many years. Her happiest times were spent there and she enjoyed socializing with others in the community through her employment at the Carstairs Post Office. WAYNE MCNAMARA

 

Wayne McNamara, beloved husband of 64 years (so close to 65), of Jean, peacefully passed away Tuesday February 16, 2021.

Wayne is survived by his wife Jean of 64 years and 6 beautiful children, 11 Grandchildren and 13 Great Grandchildren.

Jerry (Ann): Sheri (Terry) – Oliver; Dean – Kylie, Claire; Tammy (Phil) – Chloe, Peter. Mickey (Janie): Carly (Jared) – Coming in July. Pam (Brian): Jesse – Braydon, Kory; Tyler (Toni-Anne) – Nova Lynn. Kevin (Colleen): Samantha (Logan) – Ty, Kate, Audrey; Spencer (Raquel) – Harvey. Daylene (Ole): Nathan. Trevor (Carmen): Kyle (Ciara) – Bryson, Coming in May; Nick.

Wayne was predeceased by his brother Clifford and one Grandson David.

Wayne had an amazing life, born in Rockglen Saskatchewan and grew up in Kincaid, where he started his work life as a Mercantile Man shortly after getting married. The next career move was to Moose Jaw to become a Surveyor. Finally, Wayne found his true work calling in flooring, starting in Regina at Craklin Carpet where he became a wholesale representative for Kennidy’s. This set him up for his move to Lethbridge to become the Head Sales Manager at Revelstoke. In 1993, Wayne and family, moved to Medicine Hat, to assist two of his sons, Jerry and Kevin, to establish Creative Floor Coverings. In 2000, Wayne retired and returned to Lethbridge. Wayne then was instrumental in assisting two more sons, Trevor and Mickey, to establish their own flooring business, McNamara Carpet Gallery, which they later sold but then opened Flooring Superstore 5 years later.

Wayne has created a great legacy in the Family Flooring Business, which included all. They each had their own niche from Mom (Jean) gluing down carpet, the four boys (Jerry, Mickey, Kevin and Trevor) owning their businesses, Pam and Daylene assisting with installs. Wayne was immensely proud of this legacy he unknowingly was creating and continues as there are already four grandchildren in the flooring business, which Wayne has encouraged them to do and they are all very successful.

Wayne didn’t take retirement laying down. He had so many passions but making people happy had to top the list. He spent hours perfecting his homemade bread, which he would use for horse trading for goods at the Farmers Market and for getting favors/chores done at home . Wayne would make up to 14 loaves of his delicious bread per week. He also did this with his famous homemade jams. Wayne also was extremely passionate about his garden and yard. Each spring he would start over 70 tomato plants, which he took so much pride in. This gave him his nickname of “Tomato Man” which he wore as a badge of honor. Twice a week, you couldn’t stop him if you tried, Wayne would go and play in a crib tournament with a great group of friends, no matter the weather. In the summer, you could find Wayne at 40 Mile camping and socializing. He literally seemed to know everyone.

A special Thank You to Doctor Dalphond, for her amazing care she gave to Wayne. Doctor Low for his treatment and care of Wayne’s heart. The pharmacists at both Costco and Norbridge, for all the time and compassion for Wayne. Thank you.

Wayne’s Love For Life and People was infectious, he was never scared to talk to anyone or give a hug and a kiss.

Thank you for all the love and support via Facebook and phone calls. He would LOVE that! Due to Covid restrictions, there will be a celebration of life to be announced later.

In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to a charity of your choice (heart and stroke, animal shelter, etc…) or plant a tomato plant in honor of Wayne McNamara.
