CAROLINA IANNATTONE

“Nonna Carolina”
September 24, 1921 – January 14, 2021

After 99 years of filling hearts with love and kindness, it is with sadness that we must announce the peaceful passing of Nonna Carolina, our precious mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and dear friend to many, who left us to be with her beloved husband, Giovanni Iannattone, on Thursday, January 14, 2021. Nonna had a kindness and character that was largely guided by her faith and her view of life could be summed up by what she often said: È così! “It is what it is!”. For Nonna, family meant everything and was foremost in her thoughts. Nonna will always be cherished by her children, Gino (Patricia) Iannattone, Antonia “Nina” (Bill) Haysom and Beni Iannattone. The true treasures in her life were her grandchildren and great- grandchildren: Johanna (Denis) Hassett and their children, Arthur, Tiffany, Lucy and Ryle; Matthew (Deanna) Haysom and their children, Fischer and Kinleigh; and Marcus (Genevieve Bourdon) Iannattone and their son, Khyran. Nonna adored many nieces and nephews in Canada, Italy, Switzerland and Australia. Nonna Carolina was predeceased by her parents, Savina and Beniamino Minchella; her husband, Giovanni, and his siblings, including dear Biagio (Annita) (who also came to Alberta); her sister and brother-in-law, Antonia (Domenico) Rizzo; and her brother, Domenico Minchella.

Nonna Carolina, the eldest of three children, was born on September 24, 1921 in Sant’ Andrea del Garigliano, Italy. On October 6, 1946, Nonna married Giovanni and began their family. Within seven years they had decided to head 8,000 kilometers due West to Medicine Hat, Alberta. Giovanni went first and two years later, Nonna, with two small children in tow, traversed the Mediterranean and the Atlantic by steam ship to Pier 21 in Halifax, then traveled across Canada by train to Medicine Hat where Nonna created hearth and home. Nonna embraced her new country, new culture and language and soon after had her third child, Beni. Nonna was an extraordinary gardener and cook. Her entire backyard was a garden of plenty, which she planted, nurtured and harvested year in and year out, well into her 90s. Her three to five pound tomatoes and 14-foot high sunflower were Medicine Hat News-worthy events and served as fine examples of her gardening prowess. True to her Italian heritage, Nonna was a fabulous wine maker and the annual vintage knocked the socks off many of us. At the age of 97, Nonna transitioned and adopted new homes at Meadowlands and Masterpiece Southland Meadows. Our family is grateful to the caring staff and new friends who were a blessing and comfort to her.

Che Dio ti benedica. We will do our best to follow your path by having concern for others and channeling your strength to meet our challenges. Arrivederci Nonna. Friends and family are invited to pay their respects at the PATTISON FUNERAL HOME on Tuesday, January 19, 2021 from 3:00 – 5:00 p.m. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at Holy Family Parish on Wednesday, January 20, 2021 at 11:00 a.m. with Father Iqbal Khurshid celebrant. Due to the current COVID-19 restrictions, attendance will be by invitation only. Family and friends are invited to watch the funeral Mass online. Please go to Youtube.com and in the search line type in: “Medicine Hat Holy Family Church.” Interment, beside her dear husband Giovanni, will follow at Hillside Cemetery. Any charitable donation in memory of Nonna Carolina would be greatly appreciated by the family. PAUL CHAPMAN

February 16th, 1958 – January 14th, 2021

With heavy hearts and great sorrow, the family of Paul Bernard Chapman wish to announce his sudden passing on Thursday, the 14th of January, 2021. Born in Amherst, Nova Scotia Paul had a great childhood growing up in Canada’s Ocean playground with his brothers and sisters. He moved to Alberta at the young age of 18, where eventually he met his future wife, Fay, and together they raised a family, primarily between Redcliff and Camrose. Paul was a fun-loving guy whose heart was as big as his laugh. He could make any situation funny and people were just drawn to him because he was warm, open and always ready to share his mostly ‘inappropriate’ humour. He loved his Pepsi, his Oilers, his junk food and anyone who knew him would also know that the animals in his life always came first. He will be sadly missed by all who knew him and he leaves to cherish him, his wife of 34 years, Fay Chapman; Daughter, Angela (Neil) Kew; Sons, John (Melody) Astika, Chance (Cassandra) Chapman and Randy (Camille) Chapman. He was also otherwise known as ‘Big Paul’ to his grandchildren, Mae, Ben, Lylah, Alexis, Savannah, Annalise, Josh, Briony, Alex and Willow. He also leaves behind brothers, Ron, Billy, Andy and sister, Marg as well as many nieces and nephews. Paul is predeceased by his Mother, Jantina; his Father, Arnold; a grandson, Finn; as well as his sister, Marilyn, who will surely have met him at the pearly gates with a whiskey in her hand. Most importantly, Paul will be reunited with Luke, Minnie-Mouse, Foxy, Simba and numerous mama kitties!

Abraham Lincoln said

“And in the end, it’s not the years in a life, it’s the life in the years”

Paul’s life is a testament to this quote as he lived every one of his nine lives to the very fullest.
