1934 ~ DENNIS (IKE) PINDER ~ 2020

Dennis “Ike” Pinder of Redcliff, AB, passed away on Sunday, August 9th, 2020 at the age of 85 years. He leaves to cherish his memory his loving wife of 61 years, Edith “Edie” Pinder; son, Glen; granddaughter, Michelle Rita Pinder; brother, Ralph (Vi); as well as in-laws, Marie Edwards of Prince George, BC, Wayne (Jean) Crawford of Redcliff, AB, Gary Crawford of Medicine Hat, AB, Nina Crawford of Dauphin, MB, Patricia (Scott) Larose of Victoria, BC as well as many nieces, nephews and cousins. Dennis was predeceased by his son, Mark; his brother, Alan; and brother and sister- in-law, Burt (Carolyn) Crawford. Dennis was born at home in Redcliff where he was raised, educated, employed, and retired except for the three years that he was in the airforce. He was employed by Domglas for over three decades and retired upon its closing. He played hockey and baseball for the Redcliff Legion Red Sox and also curled. His family was very important to him and he will be sadly missed by them as well as his close friends. A Memorial Service will take place at SAAMIS MEMORIAL FUNERAL CHAPEL, #1 Dunmore Road SE, on Friday, August 14th, 2020 at 1:00 p.m. Interment will follow at REDCLIFF CEMETERY. Due to Covid-19, attendance will be limited to 100 people including staff and clergy. 1942 ~ William (Bill) Patrick Degenhardt ~ 2020

Bill passed away peacefully in his home Tuesday August 11th, 2020 at the age of 78 years after a brave fight that never pushed him to complain or take the smile from his face. Bill enjoyed visits from his family and friends, especially if they came for Happy Hour. Bill was born in Leader Saskatchewan and moved to Medicine Hat as a young boy where he later met the love of his life Annie, married & raised their family together. He is survived by his two children, Patrick (Lisa) Degenhardt and Michaelene (Doug) Spencer; his four grandchildren, Billie and Leighton Spencer and Payton and Jaxon Degenhardt; his sisters, Delores (Dick) Edwards, Valeri (Rick) Stefani; brother, John Degenhardt; sisters-in-law, Gerry Degenhardt and Vivian Anhelher; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Bill was pre-deceased by his loving wife, Annie Degenhardt and his brother, Michael Degenhardt. Bill loved to play as hard as he worked and truly enjoyed doing both; family and friends were always welcomed in his home. Plenty of food and cold beer were on hand all the time. Cooking and feeding his friends and family was a great source of happiness, and if 10 people were expected there would be enough food for 30 people. Bill’s warm heart and sly sense of humour will be missed by all that knew him. Bill loved to hunt, fish, and spend time with his grandchildren whenever possible. After leaving his home of 40 years, Bill enjoyed his stay at Masterpiece where his family and friends could come visit with him at Happy Hour. His care givers at Masterpiece and the MHRH Dialysis unit became his extended family and he appreciated them all immensely. A private graveside service will take place at a later date. DR. KARL LUDWIG MUELLER

1952 ~ 2020
Karl Ludwig Mueller of Medicine Hat, Alberta passed away on August 8th, 2020 at the age of 67 years. He leaves to cherish his memory his two sons, Lu (Ludwig) Mueller and Karl-William Mueller; his sister MaryAnn Mueller (Toby Weisgerber); and nephew, Matthew Weisgerber. Karl was born in Heidelberg, Germany on December 11, 1952 to Fritz and Anne Mueller. They immigrated to Canada in 1954 and settled in Medicine Hat. In 1957, Karl’s sister MaryAnn was born. Karl graduated from Medicine Hat High School before attending Medicine Hat College. He attended the University of Calgary, graduating in 1975 (B.Sc. Hon.). Karl then moved to Victoria, British Columbia to study Psychology at the University of Victoria on a full scholarship. There, he met and married his first partner Cheryl Mallette. After graduating from the University of Victoria (M.A., Ph.D.) he began his career as a Registered Psychologist, providing Counselling and Educational Psychology services in Victoria. With the birth of his son Lu, in 1985, Karl packed up the family and moved to Meadow Lake, Saskatchewan where he worked as a School Psychologist for many rural schools in the north-central region. A few years later the family decided to return to BC, settling in Castlegar where his son William was born in 1991. With a new addition to the family, Karl accepted a position as a Child Psychologist at the Trail Children's Development Centre and also had a successful private practice. In 2004 Karl returned to his beloved hometown of Medicine Hat to begin a new chapter in his life. He accepted a position as a Statistics Instructor in the Division of Science & Health Studies at Medicine Hat College (his Alma Mater). For his dedication and outstanding work at Medicine Hat College, Karl was recognized with a Service Achievement Award in 2012 and a 15 Year Service Award in 2019. In his work for the college, Karl was known for being an enthusiastic and innovative instructor who always had great consideration for his students and colleagues. Outside of his work as an instructor, Karl often volunteered his time and participated in many college and community activities. Karl worked passionately and tirelessly as an Instructor at the college from 2004 until his retirement in 2020. Karl’s dedication and passion for helping others extended far beyond his work. For over 20 years, Karl was a distinguished member and often acting President of Jest Toastmasters. Karl was also a significant member of the Archaeological Society of Alberta – Southeastern Centre, where he has served as Director, President, and Past President. Karl was a devoted and fun-loving father who always encouraged his sons to expand their horizons. He was adventurous and enjoyed trying new things, going to new places, and sharing what he discovered with his children. As a child himself, affectionately nicknamed “Loots” by his sister MaryAnn, he learned carpentry from his father. He enjoyed making puzzles from wood and built a birdhouse which was used by many sparrows. Even as an adult, Karl had a fantastic sense of humour and never lost his appreciation for fun novelties like magic tricks, illusions, and brain teasers. He loved watching old movies and listening to music such as The Beatles, Burton Cummings, and Leonard Cohen. He approached everyday problems with unconventional and brilliant solutions. Karl was very proud of his German heritage and greatly enjoyed visiting his birthplace of Heidelberg. Karl’s presence will be greatly missed by his family, friends, colleagues, students, and countless others who have had the pleasure of meeting him. We give our heartfelt thanks to the doctors, nurses, and staff of the Medicine Hat Hospital for their care and support of Karl and his family. JOAN WATTS

August 5, 1943 ~ August 8, 2020

“A mother is someone who can take the place of all others
but whose place no one else can take.”

Laura Joan Watts passed away peacefully at the Medicine Hat Regional Hospital on Saturday, August 8, 2020, at the age of 77 years. Joan was born in Vancouver, B.C. on August 5, 1943. She was the third of four children of Howard and Mildred Taylor. Joan received her schooling in Biggar up until Grade 10 then she ventured to Saskatoon to live on her own and attend Marvel Beauty School. Upon graduation, she moved to Eatonia to work for Evelyn Sommers. There she fell in love with a strapping young rancher and eventually she bought her own shop on Main Street until her family grew too large to do both. Out numbered by five males in the house, Joan established her place early on as the keeper of the home. Joan was never one to soften the truth. As a ranchers wife, she learned that calves may end up in your bathtub or basement, travelling was limited to team roping events and venues like Vegas when the NFR was on and meal time means at least three squares a day. When branding time came along, she could really showcase her cooking talents as everyone came to the Watts brandings to help out so that Jerry would help at theirs with 3-4 boys in tow.
As a mom, the boys remember her paint stick and bar of soap that she wasn’t afraid to use on any kid stepping out of line, patched jeans, spending hours in the garden with their mother (never voluntarily), her getting off the phone from other mothers when they had accidently roped the neighbor kids off their bikes, the baking that would be in the freezer and then the anger they would endure when she realized those containers were empty, many miles going to hockey practices and games and her displeasure the Christmas everyone showed up with dogs and she grumbled about all the dogs and no grandchildren, then being presented with three the following year.
The grandchildren, oh how she loved them, remember her ice cream sundae toppings, waiting to see if grandma brought her delicious apple pie for Sunday suppers, hot dogs and kraft dinner, cutting their toast into four before bed, Christmas mornings, her crazy driving, going for walks with Bo, grandchildren weddings and her displeasure about mini stick tourneys in her basement.
Joan will forever be loved and remembered by her sons, Darryl (Zerlina), Brent (Lana), Kim (Leanne) and Travis (Tara); grandchildren, Jayelle, Taylor (Chelsey), Ty, Brayden, Kourtney (Chad), Aaron, Shaunda, Evan, Haylie, Austin, Brynn, Brooke and Jayce; siblings, Wayne (Veronica) Taylor and Patti Evanisky and sisters-in-law, Gail (Wayne) Holmes and Bonnie Shore. She was predeceased by her loving husband, Gerald Watts; parents, Howard and Mildred Taylor; brother, Jack Taylor; parents-in-laws, David and Madge Watts and brothers-in-law, Bill Shore and Alex Evanisky.

PEGGY SOHN

1939 ~ 2020

Hildegard ‘Peggy’ Sohn passed away at St. Joseph’s Home – Carmel Hospice in Medicine Hat on Friday, August 7, 2020, at the age of 81 years. Left to cherish Peggy’s memory are her son, Jeff (Linda) Sohn; grandson, Tanner (Mackenzie) Sohn and their sons, Kruz, Sawyer and Maxwell; grandson, Carter Sohn (Nicole Welsh); daughter, Ursula Sohn (Sheldon Ernst); son, Tim (Cathy) Sohn; grandson, Josh Sohn (Marlie Bramwell) and their children, Lennyn, Harlyn and Huxley. Peggy was predeceased by her husband, Siegfried Albert Sohn. Born in the Black Forest region of Germany in 1939, Hildegard Sohn was 18 when she arrived in Regina with her newly married sister, Gisela and brother-in-law, George. Intending to stay and work for a year, she changed plans and married Siegfried Sohn in 1958, who nicknamed her Peggy. Jeff, Ursula and Tim soon followed. Living in Swift Current and later in Medicine Hat, Peggy worked at the Betty Shop and later interior decorated new houses built by Siegfried. At Riverside Waterslide, she worked the office and retail side. Peggy loved the fresh veggies their large garden supplied and nurtured every kind of flower in their huge yard. Her special love was watching the many visiting birds and befriending and taming the tiny chickadees. Peggy loved family camping, fishing and hiking. Later years saw her travel internationally, becoming a great photographer taking a deep interest in people, their culture and landscapes. Peggy loved everyone at St. Joseph’s and was so appreciative of all the care she received. A most sincere thank you from the entire family, to each of you at St. Joseph’s; you are so very special and held in the highest regard and love.
