1160 Obituaries 1942 ~ LLOYD HELLMAN ~ 2020 Lloyd Patrick Hellman passed away on Thursday, February 20, 2020, at the age of 77 years, beloved husband of Diane Hellman of Medicine Hat. He also leaves to cherish his memory four children, Murray (Michelle) Hellman of Medicine Hat, Lynette (Darrell) Steinkey of Lethbridge, Kim (Carey) Hellman and Shaun (Alicia) Hellman all of Richmound; ten grandchildren; two brothers, Robert (Delores) Hellman and Charles (Grace) Hellman all of Medicine Hat; three sisters, Clara Miller of Medicine Hat, Eileen Andrews of Lethbridge, Rose (Glen) Moen of Swift Current; two sisters-in-law, Debbie Hellman of Richmound and Peggy Fetch (Steve Bygrave) of Medicine Hat as well as numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents Theresa and Nick Hellman; one brother Ron; one sister, Marlene (Pius) Deck; two brothers-in-law Gerry Miller and Warren Andrews and one sister-in-law Maureen Moser. Family and friends will gather for prayers in the PATTISON CHAPEL on Monday evening at 7:00 p.m. The funeral mass will be celebrated in Holy Family Parish (1451 Strachan Road SE) on Tuesday, February 25, 2020 at 11:00 a.m. with Father Iqbal Khurshid celebrant. Colton leaves to cherish his memory: his fiancée, Taylor Churla; his mother and step-father, Marlyn (Sheldon) Frank; his father and step-mother, Cory (Karla) Oliphant; his sisters, Kaylee Thera and Kristy Dubbeldam (Jeff); Taylor’s parents, Rus (Cheryle) Churla; and Taylor’s brother, Gage Churla; his grandparents, Gladys Quast, Madeline Oliphant, and Paul & Dale McLeod; as well as many aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews, and friends. Colton was predeceased by grandfathers, Tom Quast and Dale Oliphant. Colton was born on February 25th, 1994 in Medicine Hat, where he was raised and received his education. While attending Medicine Hat High School, Colton was chosen to be part of the Senior Bowl, South Football Team, a high light of his senior year. He met the love of his life Taylor seven years ago, and in 2015 they moved to Edmonton, where Colton pursued his career as an electrician. Colton and Taylor were to be married this summer on July 25th. Taylor will forever be grateful to have been loved by someone as amazing as Colton, as he always made sure Taylor knew how much he loved and cared for her. Colton enjoyed working out, as his running shoe collection will attest too. He also liked snowboarding, going on road trips and spending time with family and friends. Besides watching Netflix, he never missed watching football on Sunday, especially the Seattle Sea Hawks. Colton will be remembered for his outgoing nature, positive attitude, sense of humour, and his ability to strike up a conversation with anyone, and above all else his loyalty to this family and friends. BRIAN MOORE February 7, 1935 – February 15, 2020 On Saturday, February 15, Brian Moore passed away following a prolonged battle with cancer. He will be lovingly remembered by his daughters, Janet (Mark) Hutchison and Trish Moore (Scott McDonald); grandchildren, Meaghan and Liam Hutchison as well as his sisters, Mona Anderson and Nora Dewhirst. Brian was predeceased by his wife, Patricia. Brian was born in Camrose, Alberta. After high school, he was accepted into the Officer’s Training programme of the Canadian Armed Forces and was proud to be a Royal Canadian Dragoon, an Armoured Corps division. Brian met Pat in Germany, where he was stationed in Iserlohn and Pat taught at the Canadian school in Hemer. They married in Pat’s home town of Simcoe, ON and raised their family across Canada. During this period, Brian was selected to take part in the Armor Officer Advanced Class at the Armor School in Fort Knox Kentucky and graduated on the Commandant’s list. Brian was deployed to a UN Peacekeeping mission in Cyprus, taught at the Canadian Land Forces Command & Staff College in Kingston ON, and was Base Personnel Officer in Shilo, MB. Brian took his retirement posting in Medicine Hat. After retirement, Brian was active with the militia and served as Commanding Officer of the Southern Alberta Light Horse from 1984 to 1988. In their later years, Brian was a devoted husband to Pat as she experienced many years of illness. He will be remembered as a kind and gracious man with a fascination for military history and great love for his family and friends. Janet and Trish are very grateful for the support Brian received from Mike Vanak and the Caring Hearts team, Home Care, Meals on Wheels, the Medicine Hat Regional Hospital and his warm-hearted neighbours, Doris and Darien Osterhold. DAVID JÓN THOMSON October 18th, 1939 – February 13, 2020 David Jón Thomson of Toronto, ON passed away on February 13, 2020 at St. Michael’s hospital in Toronto during emergency surgery for a torn aorta. David was born in Medicine Hat, AB, the son of Wilfrid Laurier Thomson and Helga Thomson (nee Bergman) and beloved brother of Louise (deceased), Kay and Leora. David grew up in Redcliff, attended Medicine Hat High School, the University of Alberta and the University of Western Ontario where he received his MBA in 1963. He married Diane Gillies of Buckingham, QC in 1964. From 1967 to 1972, David worked on the campaigns of Pierre Trudeau and served as an aide and advisor in the Prime Minister’s Office. While living in Ottawa, two daughters were born, Kristin in 1967 and Gillian in 1970. He then transitioned into commercial real estate, working with Oxford Properties which led to a number of moves including Calgary, Edmonton and Minneapolis. Lastly, he managed a US portfolio of commercial mortgages for Great-West Life Assurance Co. in Denver, CO. In the late 1990’s, David “retired” and he and Diane moved back to Toronto, happy to be close to friends that stretched back to his days at Western. He continued to serve on a number of corporate boards and was the long-time President of their Condo Association. David was an exceptional athlete. He played basketball for the University of Alberta, ran marathons (under three hours), was an avid cyclist and in recent years rowed 10,000 meters a day on a rowing machine. His eagerness to stay fit was evident in the annual walking trips he planned and shared with a group of close friends. Over the years, they walked hundreds of miles along the Thames River path, across Scotland, along the El Camino in Spain and through small towns and vineyards in Tuscany. David also hosted Thomson family reunions, transporting his own family plus his three sisters, their spouses, children and grandchildren across continents to share a week together creating wonderful memories. David’s own inherent drive and ambition along with his parents’ insistence on a University education, formed the foundation for his success. David was a loving son and brother, a devoted husband, a doting father, uncle and grandfather, and loyal friend to many. He is survived by his wife Diane, daughters Kristin and Gillian, their husbands Bryan Dilworth and Kent Johnson, and three grandsons: Riley Dilworth, Duncan Johnson and Graham Johnson. The family will honour David’s memory with a private gathering. A celebration will be held in Toronto in June 2020. The family will be establishing an education scholarship in David’s name.
