1924 ~ IDA STURM ~ 2019
Ida Sturm passed away on Friday, May 31st, 2019 at 95 years of age. She was able to remain in her own home until May 25th. She was predeceased by her husband, Fred in 1973; her parents, Emanuel and Wilhelmine Bittner; 4 brothers; and one sister. She is survived by her daughter, Betty (Leonard) Janke; 4 grandchildren, Stephanie (Daniel Mantei), Christine (Scott) Nelson, Ryan, and Catherine (Curt Ostergren); and 5 great-grandchildren, Hunter, Levi, Olivia and Emily Nelson, and Russell Ostergren. A Private Graveside service was held at Hillside Cemetery. The family would like to thank 5 West staff for their wonderful care in Ida`s last days and hours, as well as Home Care and Dr. Rinaldi. 1936 ~ DOUG WAGNER ~ 2019
Douglas Dwayne Wagner passed away peacefully on Monday, June 3, 2019 at the Medicine Hat Regional Hospital at the age of 82 years. Born on September 21, 1936 to Jess and Rosa Wagner on the farm near Senate, Saskatchewan, he was the youngest of five children.
He is survived by the love of his life and wife of 62 years Jeannine; his two sons, Clint and Clayton (Christie); grandchildren, Kiaya and Piper; and great grandchildren, Sebastian and Oliver; double cousin, Keith Wagner (Mary) and Iva Jean Wagner; sister-in-law, Addie Wagner; brother-in-law, John Railton (Lynn); sister-in-law, Jacqueline Webster (Jim); and numerous nieces, nephews and single and double cousins, too numerous to name.
He was predeceased by his parents, Jess and Rosa; brothers, Dale Wagner (Eve), Martin Wagner (Dorothy); sisters, Mary Messmer (Dominick), Norma Popick (Stan); double cousins, Jack Wagner (Jean), Maloa Stewart (Bob), Harry Wagner (Elenoir), Sharon Geiger (Joe) and Ken Wagner; single cousins, Frankie Wagner and Mildred Lea (Jake); brother-in-law, David Railton (Elizabeth); and sister-in-law, Marie Thorton (Lynn).
Dad loved ranching. Anything to do with animals, from breaking horses, calving the cows, branding and roundup. He took his education at Zentner and Senate schools. The teacher in grade 8 agreed to pass him if he promised to quit school. He worked on the family ranch for several years then he met and married a black haired little french girl who surprisingly was a teacher. Jeannine and Douglas were together for almost 63 years of marriage, moving from place to place for jobs and ultimately purchasing a ranch at Senate only 6 miles from the family farm.
He participated in many of the groups and clubs such as the PFRA committee, Rink committee, 4-H and the sales ring board.
He drove school bus for many years and had a special commentary on the roads leading to and from the hills. He enjoyed the people but found winter much less stressful when he moved to the Govenlock route.
He retired from ranching in 1997 and moved to Medicine Hat where he started a new chapter, golfing, bowling and fishing with Stan. He made numerous excursions to Vegas, Moose Jaw, Atlantic Canada, England and points in the United States.
He enjoyed going out to Clint's ranch to work with cows and horses and to thin out the ever-present varmints. He purchased a horse for Piper. He had Piper's mare bred. It was great for Dad as he always thought that foals were the 2nd most beautiful things on earth, of course Mom was #1.
A Celebration of Doug's Life will be held at the MAPLE CREEK ARMOURY, 502 Marsh Street Maple Creek, Saskatchewan, on Saturday, June 15th, 2019 at 4:00 p.m. A private interment will take place at a later date at the Consul Cemetery. DARYN "MILSY" MILLER
1968 ~ 2019
It is with the heaviest of hearts that the family of a truly remarkable man, Daryn “Milsy” Todd Miller announces his unexpected passing in Medicine Hat on Tuesday, May 28, 2019, at 50 years of age. Daryn leaves to cherish his memory his children, Kaylee and Ayden and their mother, Kari. He also leaves his sisters, Kim Miller and nephew Jeff Fry and his family; Shawn and her husband, Kelly Torresan and his special friend, Sheri Fried and her son, Mateo. Daryn was predeceased by his parents, Norman and Sharon and step-father, George. Daryn was born in Medicine Hat on June 19, 1968. He grew up and went to school in Medicine Hat and graduated from CHHS. Daryn attended the University of Lethbridge where he received his education degree. Not long after university he met the mother of his children, Kari. Daryn and Kari relocated to Fox Lake where he taught for three years. Returning to Medicine Hat, he took his first position with Prairie Rose School Division in Bow Island. Daryn held various positions within the division and eventually finished his teaching career as principal at Parkside School. He truly loved his family and was very proud of his kids, Kaylee and Ayden. Daryn was loved and respected by his friends, family, fellow teachers and students and will be deeply missed – he was a “Beauty”! JACK VAN MAARION
August 1, 1929 – June 3, 2019
It is with saddened hearts that Ella and her family announce the passing of their dear husband and father, Jack Richard Van Maarion. He passed away peacefully at the Good Samaritan Society South Ridge Village in Medicine Hat on Monday, June 3, 2019, at the age of 89 years. Along with, Ella, his beloved wife of 59 years, left to cherish Jack’s memory are his sons, Craig and Todd (Natalie); grandchildren, Cory, Tia and Teagan; his faithful, furry companion, Tucker as well as numerous nieces, nephews and members of Ella’s family. Jack was predeceased by his grandsons, Brandon (in infancy) and Michael; parents, Leonard Sr. and Theresa; twin sisters, Eve (Jack) Gloslie and Evelyn (Art) Entzminger; brothers, Leonard (Caroline) and Richard (in infancy). Jack loved mother nature and would do anything to get outside to enjoy it. He loved to sit with Ella on the porch at the farm and watch the sun rise and set and see the stars twinkling in the night sky. Jack and Leonard lived on the family farm all of their lives and Jack enjoyed working beside Leonard, growing the farm into a successful livelihood. Jack loved his cattle and a good crop. In his downtime, he was an avid fisherman, and boy could he fish! Family meant everything to Jack and he loved teaching his sons everything he knew about fishing and the farm. He will be deeply missed. Jack’s family would like to say thank you for the help they received from neighbors over the years, especially in the last few years when life became more challenging and difficult for him. LORRAINE CARLIER
December 21, 1928 ~ June 4, 2019
It is with profound sadness the family of Lorraine Rita Carlier announce her passing on Tuesday, June 4, 2019, at the age of 90 years. She was born on December 21, 1928, on an usually warm day in Athabasca, AB. Lorraine and her sister, Ruth grew up with wonderful parents; mom, Jean, a feisty little Irish girl and dad, Rosario, a feisty little Frenchman and five first cousins who lived down the road. She walked four miles to school, skied, skated and loved to dance. Lorraine was optimistic, fearless and classy from her earrings to her heels. She was always put together well and always dignified.
Lorraine graduated from Grade 12 at 16 years old. In 1947, at the age of 18, she began working at the Athabasca Imperial Bank with her sister and continued working there until 1951. One day in 1951, while having lunch with a friend she met a good looking 18 year old Wallace ‘Wally’ Carlier from Val Marie, SK., who was working on construction. It was instant attraction! In July 1952, they drove to Calgary with plans to meet her parents and take in the Stampede. Instead they decided to elope; arriving in Great Falls, Montana in time to buy a license, get blood tests, rings, a minister to marry them and along with a witness. They never did have a picture of the day, but there are 60 years of pictures after that day to treasure.
Wally worked in construction and in the bush so they moved many times in Alberta where in 1954, Rhonda Jean and in 1955, Wallace ‘Darryl’ Ross were born. In 1960, they were living near Bracken, SK., when Lindsey Lloyd was born. By 1961, they settled permanently a mile north of Val Marie and continued farming and ranching. Lorraine helped with everything on the farm, made great meals especially butter tarts (Wally’s favorite) and sewed beautiful clothes for herself and the children. She worked at the Credit Union for a few years until she was hired as Village Secretary from 1964-1991. Lorraine cared about people and her adopted little town, volunteering on many committees.
When she retired from the village office, they moved to Medicine Hat. Lorraine loved her cozy little house on Rossland Drive S.E. and her wonderful neighbours there who helped shovel snow, mow and make sure she was okay. Lorraine worked for a few years at Darryl & Jan’s trucking company and enjoyed it. In her late 60’s, she completely changed gears and for seven years babysat Lindsey and Vinee’s four children. Lindsey bought her a mini-van and the kilometers piled up as she took them to hockey, skating, swimming and school activities all the while keeping up with all the awards, grads, convocations and lives of her other grandchildren. She also drove many kilometers to Swift current to visit Rhonda, Lorne and Wally on the farm.
When Lorraine retired for good at the age of 80 years, she spent 2-4 days a week playing crib acquiring a bunch of new pals; lovely people like, Cheryl and Ethel who called and visited with her right to the end. Lorraine sold her house in 2018 (following two summers of radiation treatments) and moved to an apartment in Chinook Village. She loved it there and had more people to visit with. She tried to stay enthusiastic but she slowly began to fade.
Lorraine is survived by her children; Rhonda (Lorne) Veitch, Darryl (Janet) Carlier, Lindsey (Vinee) Carlier; grandchildren, Melissa (Monty) Scory, Stacey Carlier, Lindell (Daniela) Veitch, Keelan (Nancy) Veitch, Jordan Carlier, Chelsey Carlier (Wacey), Tristan Carlier, Ciara Carlier; great-grandchildren, Madison and Mason Scory, Shay Carlier, Ivy McCallum, Liam Veitch, Zoe and Daphne Veitch; her dear sister, Ruth West; loving cousins, June Gora and family, Louise (Paul) Kavulok and family, Caroline LaPorte and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents, Rosario and Jean LaPorte (1990); husband, Wallace Carlier (2011); brother-in-law, Ron West (1978); niece, Carol West Petit (2015); aunt, Agnes and uncle, Arthur; cousins, Bob, Edna and daughter, Linda, Art LaPorte.

SUSANNE MACDONALD (Rowat) passed away peacefully in the presence of her family on May 29, 2019. She is survived by her husband Rick, daughter Erin (Cody) Turcotte, their children Karsynn and Colter and her mother Ruth and brother Hartley as well as many aunts, uncles, and cousins and friends. She was predeceased by her father James Rowat.

It is with great sadness that we announce that Leonard Edward Slachta 85, passed away peacefully in his sleep on April 30, 2019. He was predeceased by his wife Adeleine Slachta, his parents, Edward and Magdalene, his sister Violet, and his only brother Kenneth. Leonard is survived by many loving friends and family. Including three sisters; Emilie, Shirley and Marlene. His ashes will be placed with his wife, Addie, at Wetaskiwin Memorial Cemetery, plot location K-12-30 on August 10, 2019 at 12:00 noon. At Leonard’s request there will be no service. However, we do encourage having a celebration of life among family and friends.
